Virtual reality provides a powerful way to visualize the three-dimensional, atomic-level structures of molecules and materials. We present new virtual reality software for molecular modeling and for testing the use of virtual reality in organic chemistry education. The open-source software, named VRChem, was developed primarily for building, visualizing and manipulating organic molecules using a head-mounted virtual reality system. The design goal of the VRChem software was to create an easy-to-use and entertaining user experience for molecular modeling in virtual reality. We discuss the design and implementation of VRChem, together with real-life user experiences collected from students and academic research staff.

The intricate nature of congenital heart disease requires understanding of complex, patient-specific three-dimensional dynamic anatomy of the heart, from imaging data such as three-dimensional echocardiography for successful outcomes from surgical and interventional procedures. Conventional clinical systems use flat screens and therefore display remains two-dimensional, which undermines the full understanding of the three-dimensional dynamic data. Additionally, control of three-dimensional visualisation with two-dimensional tools is often difficult, so used only by imaging specialists. In this paper we describe a virtual reality system for immersive surgery planning using dynamic three-dimensional echocardiography, which enables fast prototyping for visualisation such as volume rendering, multi-planar reformatting, flow visualisation, and advanced interaction such as three-dimensional cropping, windowing, measurement, haptic feedback, automatic image orientation, and multi-user interactions. The available features were evaluated by imaging and non-imaging clinicians, showing that the virtual reality system can help improve understanding and communication of the three-dimensional echocardiography imaging and potentially benefit congenital heart disease treatment.

Medicinal chemistry (MC) is an indispensable component of the pharmacy curriculum. The pharmacists’ unique knowledge of a medicine’s chemistry enhances their understanding of the pharmacological activity, manufacturing, storage, use, supply, and handling of drugs. However, chemistry is a challenging subject for both teaching and learning. These challenges are typically caused by the inability of students to construct a mental image of the three-dimensional (3D) structure of a drug molecule from its two-dimensional presentations. This study explores a prototype virtual reality (VR) gamification option, as an educational tool developed to aid the learning process and to improve the delivery of the MC subject to students. The developed system is evaluated by a cohort of 41 students. The analysis of the results was encouraging and provided invaluable feedback for the future development of the proposed system.

In virtual reality technology, it is necessary to develop improvements and apply new techniques that allow rapid progress and innovative development. Nowadays, virtual reality devices have not yet demonstrated the great potential they could develop in the future. One main reason for this is the lack of precision to represent three-dimensional scenarios with a similar solvency to what our visual system obtains from the real world. One of the main problems is the representation of images using the RGB color system. This digital colorimetry system has many limitations when it comes to representing faithful images. In this work we propose to develop a virtual reality environment incorporating hyperspectral textures into a virtual reality system. Based on these hyperspectral textures, the aim of our scientific contribution is to improve the fidelity of the chromatic representation, especially when the lighting conditions of the scenes and its precision are relevant. Therefore, we will present the steps followed to render three-dimensional objects with hyperspectral textures within a virtual reality scenario. Additionally, we will check the results obtained by applying such hyperspectral textures by calculating the chromaticity coordinates of known samples.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to propose the use of a virtual reality (VR)-based approach to improve teacher education and life-long professional development. Through constant training in real-life based situations but within a safe three-dimensional virtual school environment, teachers are given the opportunity to experience and learn how to react to different types of incidents that may take place in a school environment. Design/methodology/approach The current paper presents the design cycle that was followed for the implementation of the VR teacher training system. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated with a case study that aimed to promote teachers’ understanding of student’s problematic situations related to substance use. As part of the experimental investigation, the impact of the VR system on participants’ emotions and mood states is evaluated through Electroencephalogram (EEG) measurements, heart rate (HR) recordings and self-reported data. Findings Results indicate significant changes to participant’s negative emotional and mood states, suggesting that the scenario and the VR experience had a strong impact on them. Moreover, participants’ HR was increased during the experiment, while the analysis of the EEG signal indicated that the participants experienced a stressful situation that could justify the change in their negative emotions and mood states. Originality/value The proposed VR-based approach aims to provide an innovative framework to teacher education and the related training methodology. In the long-term, the proposed VR system aims to form a new paradigm of teacher training, an alternative safe method that will allow user-teachers to learn through trial and error techniques that reflect real-life situations within a three-dimensional school space and without the risk of harming real students. To the best of our knowledge this is one of the first systematic attempts to use a VR-based methodology to address real teachers’ needs. The development of the VR application is linked to both strong theoretical foundations in education derived from the literature but also from real teachers’ problems and requirements derived from an extensive literature analysis, survey and interviews with experts including teachers, school counselors and psychologists. The VR tool addresses specific teachers’ competences as outcome, after an extensive documentation of existing Teachers’ Competence Models and significant guidance by experts who pointed specific competencies of primary importance to teachers.

Virtual reality technology is a way for teachers and students to create a simulated three-dimensional world,a vivid and lifelike learning evironment for students in terms of vision, hearing and touch, having the students feel as participants of the virtual environment.A multi-user virtual campus system based on virtual reality technology is put forward in this paper, which includes the basic models, system structure and implementation scheme. The system is a simulation of real life in campus where students can take activities such as having class, doing exercises and making friends; and teacher can make lectures, review works of students and conduct examinations; managers can manage the daily teaching activities and students' affairs.

Virtual Reality technology is wild applied in various fields with its development. This article studied the application of virtual reality technology in green construction. On the discussion of the utility of desktop virtual reality system to accomplish the three-dimensional real-time simulation of green construction project, it shows that the application of virtual reality technology in the simulation of green construction not only reduces the construction cost but also breaks the limitation of time and space. The research of this paper has very high applied value.
