In this paper, we propose a method to evaluate Highway Driving Assist (HDA) systems using the theoretical formula and dual cameras, which eliminates the need of experts or expensive equipment and reduces the time, effort, and cost required in such tests. A theoretical evaluation formula that can be calculated was proposed and used. The optimal position of the dual cameras, image and focal length correction, and lane detection methods proposed in previous studies were used, and a theoretical equation for calculating the distance from the front wheel of the vehicle to the driving lane was proposed. For the actual vehicle testing, HDA safety evaluation scenarios proposed in previous studies were used. According to the test results, the maximum errors were within 10%. It was determined that the representative cause of the maximum error occurred in the dual camera installed in the test vehicle. Problems such as road surface vibration, shaking due to air resistance, changes in ambient brightness, and the process of focusing the video occurred during driving. In the future, it is judged that it will be necessary to verify the complex transportation environment during morning and evening rush hour, and it is believed that tests will be needed in bad weather such as snow and rain.

Recently, the number of vehicles equipped with the Lane Keeping Assistance System (LKAS) is increasing. Therefore, safety evaluation to validate the LKAS has become more important. However, the actual vehicle test for safety evaluation has disadvantages such as the need for professional manpower, the use of expensive equipment, and environmental constraints. Therefore, we attempted to solve this problem using the dual cameras system with only inexpensive and accessible cameras. The optimal position of the dual cameras, image and focal length correction, and lane detection methods proposed in previous studies were used, and a theoretical equation for calculating the distance from the front wheel of the vehicle to the driving lane was proposed. For the actual vehicle testing, LKAS safety evaluation scenarios proposed in previous studies were used. According to the test results, the maximum error was 0.17 m, which indicated the reliability of the method because all errors in the tested scenarios exhibited similar trends and values. Therefore, through the use of the proposed theoretical equations in conjunction with inexpensive cameras, it is possible to reduce time, cost, and environmental problems in the development, vehicle application, and safety evaluation of LKAS components.

Energy harvesting methods that use functional materials have attracted interest because they can take advantage of an abundant but underutilized energy source. Most vibration energy harvester designs operate most effectively around their resonant frequency. However, in practice, the frequency band for ambient vibrational energy is typically broad. The development of technologies for broadband energy harvesting is therefore desirable. The authors previously proposed an energy harvester, called a flexible piezoelectric device (FPED), that consists of a piezoelectric film (polyvinylidene difluoride) and a soft material, such as silicon rubber or polyethylene terephthalate. The authors also proposed a system based on FPEDs for broadband energy harvesting. The system consisted of cantilevered FPEDs, with each FPED connected via a spring. Simply supported FPEDs also have potential for broadband energy harvesting, and here, a theoretical evaluation method is proposed for such a system. Experiments are conducted to validate the derived model.

At the present time, the Dow Chemical Fire and Explosion Index (F&EI) is a kind of risk index evaluation method that is comprehensively used in evaluating potential hazard, area of exposure, expected losses in case of fire and explosion, etc. As the research object to oil depot storage tank area, this article ultimately confirms establishing appropriate pattern of process unit as well as reasonable safety precautions compensating method, in order to insure the reasonableness of evaluating result, by means of selecting process unit, confirming material factor and compensating safety precautions, using F&EI method. This can provide the basis for theoretical ground in aspect of oil depot development and safety production management.

Increasing traffic volume and insufficient road lanes often require municipal roads to be reconstructed and expanded. Where a road passes under a bridge, the reconstruction and expansion project will inevitably have an impact on the bridge. To evaluate the safety impact of road engineering projects on bridges, this paper evaluates the safety of the roads and ancillary facilities of highway bridges involved in municipal road engineering projects. Based on a comprehensive analysis of the safety factors of municipal roads undercrossing existing bridges, a fuzzy comprehensive analytic hierarchy process (AHP) evaluation method for the influence of road construction on the safety of existing bridges is proposed. First, AHP is used to select 11 evaluation factors. Second, the target layer, criterion layer, and index layer of evaluation factors are established, then a safety evaluation factor system is formed. The three-scale AHP model is used to determine the weight of assessment indexes. Third, through the fuzzy comprehensive AHP evaluation model, the fuzzy hierarchical comprehensive evaluation is carried out for the safety assessment index system. Finally, the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method is applied to the engineering example of a municipal road undercrossing an existing expressway bridge. The comprehensive safety evaluation of the existing bridge reflects the practicability and feasibility of the method. It is expected that, with further development, the method will improve the decision-making process in bridge safety assessment systems.

AbstractRecent attention to facial alignment and landmark detection methods, particularly with application of deep convolutional neural networks, have yielded notable improvements. Neither these neural-network nor more traditional methods, though, have been tested directly regarding performance differences due to camera-lens focal length nor camera viewing angle of subjects systematically across the viewing hemisphere. This work uses photo-realistic, synthesized facial images with varying parameters and corresponding ground-truth landmarks to enable comparison of alignment and landmark detection techniques relative to general performance, performance across focal length, and performance across viewing angle. Recently published high-performing methods along with traditional techniques are compared in regards to these aspects.

The aim of the paper was to analyze effective solutions for accurate lane detection on the roads. We focused on effective detection of airport runways and taxiways in order to drive a light-measurement trailer correctly. Three techniques for video-based line extracting were used for specific detection of environment conditions: (i) line detection using edge detection, Scharr mask and Hough transform, (ii) finding the optimal path using the hyperbola fitting line detection algorithm based on edge detection and (iii) detection of horizontal markings using image segmentation in the HSV color space. The developed solutions were tuned and tested with the use of embedded devices such as Raspberry Pi 4B or NVIDIA Jetson Nano.

In this paper, a safety evaluation method of subsea High Integrity Pressure Protection System (HIPPS) based on a generalized stochastic Petri net model is proposed. Different test methods were used to detect different types of failures and to analyze the reliability of HIPPS components under the influence of common cause failures and incomplete repair. The reliability curve of a diagnostic system consisting of a transmitter system and a logic system under the influence of uncertainty over time is analyzed. The safety of HIPPS with diverse test methods were quantitatively analyzed. The results show a significant improvement in the performance of the system after testing and maintenance. Both partial-stroke testing and increased partial-stroke test coverage can be used to increase the HIPPS performance compared to traditional methods. The analysis of the Partial stroke test (PST) strategy can afford a academic basis for the selection of PST frequency and Functional test (FT) interval in practical engineering.
