The metabolic variation in the essential oil composition of Premna odorata leaves obtained from different seasons was quantitatively and qualitatively determined employing GC/MS (Gas Chromatography coupled with Mass Spectrometry) and GC/FID (Gas chromatography equipped with flame ionization detector) techniques. It displayed the existence of 97 constituents accounting for 94.19%, 92.27%, 91.95% and 92.63% for POS (spring), POM (summer), POA (autumn) and POW (winter) whole essential oils. β-Caryophyllene constituting the main metabolite in the oil in the different seasons. To better visualize the differences between them, GC data were exposed to chemometric analysis. A PCA (principal component analysis) score plot revealed the closeness of POS and POW. Molecular modelling on collagenase, elastase and hyaluronidase enzymes active centres shows that different compounds existing in the essential oil of Premna odorata leaves shows binding to the active sites with variable degrees that suggested its anti-ageing potential. Palmitic acid displayed the highest fitting for both the collagenase and elastase active centres in both pH-based and rule-based ionization methods with ∆G equals −78.27 and −44.77 kcal/mol, respectively; meanwhile, heptacosane showed the highest fitting score in the hyaluronidase centre with ∆G = −43.78 kcal/mol. In vitro assays consolidates the obtained modelling studies in which essential oil shows considerable anti-elastase and anti-hyaluronidase potential as evidenced by their IC50 values being 49.3 and 37.7 μg/mL, respectively; meanwhile, the essential oil of Premna odorata leaves displayed mild anti-collagenase potential. Thus, it can be concluded that Premna odorata could serve as a promising anti-ageing naturally occurring drug that could be effectively incorporated by pharmaceutical industries in cosmetics combating ageing and skin wrinkling.

The leaf essential oil composition of Taxodium distichum L., collected from the foothills of Uttarakhand, India was analyzed using gas chromatography-flame ionization detection (GC-FID) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) equipped with DB-5 (5% diphenyl-95% dimethyl polysiloxane) and β-cyclodextrin (6-tertiarybutyldimethylsiliyl-2,3-diethyl-β-cyclodextrin) capillary columns. Seventeen constituents, representing 90.3 to 99.4% of composition were identified in the essential oils from different seasons, viz. spring, summer, rainy, autumn and winter. The essential oil composition was mainly dominated by monoterpene hydrocarbons, represented mainly by α-pinene (81.9–94.3%). Other constituents of the oil were myrcene (0.5–4.7%), β-pinene (2.2–2.9%), limonene (0.5–1.5%), camphene (≤0.03–1.5%), and α-terpineol (upto 1.6%). Chiral analysis of T. dstichum essential oil on an ethyl substituted β-cyclodextrin capillary column revealed the presence of α-pinene in racemic form, with an enantiomeric ratio of 49.3% for (1 R)-(+)- and 50.7% for (1 S)-(-)-α-pinene.

Two peat moss species, frequent both in the mainland Portugal and in the Azores archipelago, were evaluated for essential oil composition and establishment under in vitro culture. Sphagnum auriculatum and Sphagnum subnitens essential oils were isolated by hydrodistillation and analysed by Gas Chromatography (GC) and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). The essential oil of S. auriculatum was dominated by an as yet unidentified sesquiterpene, whereas zierene was the main component of S. subnitens essential oil. The in vitro cultures were successfully established for future studies of their chemical profile. The components present in essential oils obtained from S. auriculatum and S. subnitens together with morphological traits could be used to support the taxonomy of this plant group.

Abstract- The essential oil composition from the aerial parts of Ormenis africana (Asteraceae), an endemic species from Morocco, has been investigated by GC/MS. A total of 31 compounds were identified, representing 77%. After fractionation by column chromatography, the main compound was isolated and its structure elucidated by NMR spectroscopy. The essential oil was dominated by oxygenated compounds with spathulenol (45.8%) followed by camphor (7.1%), -cadinol (5.9%) and -bisabolol (5.9%) as the main compounds. This oil can be classified as spathulenol-type according to its spathulenol content. In vitro the antibacterial activity of the whole essential oil against three Gram positive (Bacillus cereus, Enterococcus faecalis, Streptococcus C) bacteria and three Gram negative (Proteus vulgaris, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeroginosa) bacteria, showed significant results. The principal aim of this study was to analyze the chemical composition and qualitative and quantitative variability of essential oils obtained from seven naturally grown populations of thePinus peuceGrisebach, Pinaceae in Kosovo. Plant materials were collected from three populations in the Sharri National Park and from four other populations in the Bjeshkët e Nemuna National Park, in Kosovo. Essential oils were obtained by steam distillation and analyzed by GC-FID (Gas Chromatography-Flame Ionization Detection) and GC-MS (Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry). The results showed that the yield of essential oils (v/wdry weight) varied depending on the origin of population and the plant organs and ranged from 0.7 to 3.3%. In total, 51 compounds were identified. The main compounds wereα-pinene (needles: 21.6–34.9%; twigs: 11.0–24%),β-phellandrene (needles: 4.1–27.7; twigs: 29.0–49.8%), andβ-pinene (needles: 10.0–16.1; twigs: 6.9–20.7%). HCA (Hierarchical Cluster Analysis) and PCA (Principal Component Analyses) were used to assess geographical variations in essential oil composition. Statistical analysis showed that the analyzed populations are grouped in three main clusters which seem to reflect microclimatic conditions on the chemical composition of the essential oils.

The focus of the present study was on the influence of season on yield, chemical composition, antioxidant and antifungal activities of Omani basil ( Ocimum basilicum) oil. The present study involved only one of the eight Omani basil varieties. The hydro-distilled essential oil yields were computed to be 0.1%, 0.3% and 0.1% in the winter, spring and summer seasons, respectively. The major components identified were L- linalool (26.5 - 56.3%), geraniol (12.1 - 16.5%), 1,8-cineole (2.5 - 15.1%), ρ-allylanisole (0.2 - 13.8%) and DL-limonene (0.2 -10.4%). A noteworthy extra component was β- farnesene, which was exclusively detected in the oil extracted during winter and spring at 6.3% and 5.8%, respectively. The essential oil composition over the different seasons was quite idiosyncratic, in which the principal components of one season were either trivial or totally absent in another. The essential oil extracted in spring exhibited the highest antioxidant activity (except DPPH scavenging ability) in comparison with the oils from other seasons. The basil oil was tested against pathogenic fungi viz. Aspergillus niger, A. fumigatus, Penicillium italicum and Rhizopus stolonifer using a disc diffusion method, and by determination of minimum inhibitory concentration. Surprisingly high antifungal values were found highlighting the potential of Omani basil as a preservative in the food and medical industries.

The essential oils from the different parts [inflorescences (E.a.I), stems + leaves (E.a.SL) and roots (E.a.R)] of E. aquifolium Cav. gathered in Cádiz (Spain), have been extracted by steam distillation and analyzed by gas chromatography and gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. Quantitative and qualitative differences have been found between the analyzed plant parts. A total of 107 compounds have been identified. The main constituents were germacrene D (30.3%) and sesquicineole (26.7%) for E.a.I fraction, germacrene D (46.0%) and myrcene (13.8%) in the E.a.SL, while E.a.R showed phyllocladene isomer (63.6%) as a unique major compound. The percentage composition of the other constituents was lower than 5.5% in all the analyzed fractions. In agreement with other Eryngium species, no specific compound could be used as a marker for the chemotaxonomy of E. aquifolium. However, similarities in volatile composition were found between E. aquifolium and other species growing under similar environmental conditions. As far as we know, this is the first report on the essential oil of this species.

Essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation of leaves of two Nigerian species were analyzed for their constituents by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The leaf oil of Ficus benjamina L. (Moraceae), collected during the day, contained high contents of α-pinene (13.9%), abietadiene (9.7%), cis-α-bisabolene (8.2%) and germacrene-D-4-ol (8.4%), while the night sample was dominated by germacrene-D-4-ol (31.5%), 1,10-di- epi-cubenol (8.8%) and hexahydrofarnesylacetone (8.3%). This could be a possible indication of differences in emissions of volatiles by F. benjamina during the day and night. The main compounds of Irvingia barteri Hook. f. (Irvingiaceae) were β-caryophyllene (17.0%), (E)-α-ionone (10.0%), geranial (7.6%), (E)-β-ionone (6.6%) and β-gurjunene (5.1%).
