The daily functioning of children who suffer from chronic conditions may be limited by the disease and by hospitalization. Hospital schools have an important role in counterbalancing those negative effects. The aim of the study was to define hospital schools’ teachers’ needs. The data from qualitative research conducted on 21 Polish hospital school teachers was included in the analysis. A semi-structured interview method was chosen. Researchers played an active role as moderators. Thirty-four descriptive codes were assigned to the main five areas of needs related to: work conditions, the character of work, psychological support, self-fulfillment, and social relations. The results showed that the teachers were concerned about hospital school marginalization, they received no mental health support, and felt that the extent of their role was underestimated by medical staff. The lack of recognition is likely to make teachers feel frustrated, and demotivated. By learning more about what hospital teachers think of their work, it is possible to create recommendations for changes. There seems to be a need to raise awareness of the importance of schools in health care institutions.

Abstract Purpose The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has put a great strain on people’s mental health. A growing number of studies have shown worsening mental health measures globally during the pandemic. However, there is a lack of empirical study on how people support their mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to examine a number of formal and informal mental health support. Further, it explored factors that might be associated with the use of different types mental health support. Methods Data from 26,720 adults in the UCL COVID-19 Social Study were analysed between 13th April 2020 and 3rd July 2020. Data were analysed using logistic and Poisson regression models. Results About 45% of people reported talking to friends or family members to support their mental health, 43% engaging in self-care activities, 20% taking medication, 9% speaking to mental health professionals, 8% talking to a GP or other health professional, and another 8% using helpline or online services. Gender, education, living status, loneliness, pre-existing mental health conditions, general depression and anxiety, coping and personality were found to be associated with the use of mental health support. Conclusion While the negative impacts caused by the COVID-19 pandemic are inevitable, people can play an active role in managing their mental health. Understanding the patterns and predictors of various kinds of mental health support during the pandemic is crucial for future service planning and delivery through recognising potential barriers to mental health care faced by certain groups.

Few researchers have empirically examined completed or attempted death by suicide in prison and, of the available research, most has been conducted in the United Kingdom. Our purpose in this article is to increase awareness and knowledge about “lives saved” in custody drawing on the voices of Canadian provincial and territorial correctional officers (COs; n = 43). We investigate their experiences with attempted and completed death by suicide to shed light on the commonality of such experiences, and their impact on officers over time. Based on an analysis of semi-structured interview transcripts, we explore the effects of exposure to these potentially psychologically traumatic events on COs, specifically their emotional responses, as well as the supports available, both informal and formal, as they navigate their work. We found that the roles of officers, which frequently overlap with the domains of mental health support and first response in a crisis situation, are often under-recognized and underappreciated. Ultimately, we highlight the need for increased dialogue surrounding workplace trauma and mental health in prison and explore the institutional barriers that arise when facilitating discussion about mental health. We show that although some lives are lost in prison, due to natural and nonnatural causes, many lives are saved by prison staff.

Many well-established sociological studies pertaining to the salubrious link between social relations and mental health have been published. In particular, numerous researchers address the issue of how social isolation and lack of family support and social ties can adversely affect one’s mental well-being. In this paper, we seek to identify and explore the relationships between people who were clinically diagnosed with depression and the aspects of their social environment, namely their social and family circumstances in the UK adult population. One hundred and ten blogs mentioning depression as their main condition were selected from a mental health support website, Time-to-Change, for analysis. As not many studies have analysed such narratives, we expected the analysis to provide a fresher and deeper understanding of the experiences of those afflicted with depression. We observed that there is a consistent discourse emphasising the importance of social support from close loved ones, in particular friends and family members. There is evidence that social circumstances can be mediating factors in depression.

Numerous recent studies have shown that COVID-19 and the accompanying mandated lifestyle changes have resulted in significant negative effects on people’s mental health. To meet the increased need for mental health support, while also maintaining physical safety, a variety of telehealth services have been created or expanded. A body scan mindfulness program is an intervention that can easily be modified to be offered virtually. This study was designed to determine if a virtual body scan mindfulness exercise, with participants’ holding their dog or a pillow/blanket, could reduce their stress and anxiety as well as that of the facilitators. Significant differences in pre/post-State Anxiety Assessment scores for participants and facilitators were found. These results are discussed within the framework of the human animal bond and the potential of this form of intervention as a useful virtual tool for participants and facilitators alike.

Bullying is acknowledged by scientists as a considerable and still unresolved problem in sport. By triggering stress-related emotions, they determine the behavior of those experiencing bullying and cause various negative effects on their physical and mental health. However, in the presence of the tenacious trend in sports “to put one’s own house in order,” athletes, coaches, teams, and sports organizations themselves often do not emphasize bullying or state that they do not encounter the problem at all, and adheres to the belief that athletes may use negative emotions instrumentally in order to perform tasks given to them more effectively. The aim of this research was to reveal the determinants of the internal environment of sports organizations, causing trends of bullying in organized sport. To achieve the research aim, a qualitative research paradigm was chosen. The empirical study involved eight coaches working in organized sport in Lithuania. The survey was conducted using the semi-structured interview method. Data were analyzed employing inductive content analysis. The presented research results encompass the transcriptions of interviews, which are conceptually divided into three main categories revealing coaches’ opinion on trends of bullying in organized sport, related to the sports organization’s internal environment. Categories identified during the study can be equated to interrelated levels of model of Organizational behavior. The micro level-interrelationships; the mezzo level-sports professionals’ (coaches’) behavior; and the macro level-management of interrelationships. These results revealed which determinants of the sports organization’s internal environment can be favorable for emergence of bullying and its dynamics in both interrelationships among athletes and interrelationships between athletes and coaches. And these trends of bullying, revealed on the basis of the responses of coaches involved in the study, allow us to see harmful principles of coaching, bullying-promoting traditions of team/group leadership, existing in sport, and to predict how this may effect both the athlete himself, his environment and attractiveness of the sporting activity itself.

Organized workouts of aerobics might be seen as a self-development tool, as adult person’s decision to get involved into certain activity is taken consciously. One perceives such engagement being related to satisfaction of certain needs and expectations to reach the results of the systematically performed activity. The research was launched in order to reveal the motives of the females’ decision making when choosing aerobics for self-development, as well as to disclose the perceived by women impact of aerobics, considering it as a self-development tool. Half-structured interview method was applied for the research. 11 females, who attended Vilnius aerobics study, were interviewed. The data of the research were processed using qualitative content analysis, based on expert evaluation. It was established that women considered such values as family, health, carrier and happiness being the most important for them. Several universally accepted values were pointed out to be positive personal values, either already possessed or to be perfected further on by the respondents. These values were named to have been a motivating factor in choosing aerobics for self-development. Both intrinsic and extrinsic motives reinforce women to choose aerobics. Impact of aerobics as self-development tool was expressed by such aspects: rise of new needs, better psychic health, development of social relations and better quality, better results at work, gradually increasing body attractiveness. These facts prove that aerobics has a power to enable women to implement their inner potential, to satisfy their needs, to improve the quality of life, considering the fact that satisfaction with the results of sports activity is of the preconditions to form intrinsic motivation from extrinsic.
