Adopting the theoretical approach of recognitive justice and the degree of students’ recognitive experiences regarding empathy, respect, and social esteem, the present study focused on educational inequalities in the multicultural school and the factors that affect their appearance and reproduction. We examined the existence of social relations’ differences in a sample of 1303 students from 69 secondary schools in Greece, using a questionnaire constructed to investigate students’ recognitive experience of their relationships with teachers. By applying an intersectional approach, mainly through multiple regression analysis and multivariate interaction tests with MANOVA, we were able to identify that migrant students and students from families with a low educational level experienced a significantly lower degree of recognition, mainly with the forms of respect and social esteem, both in their relationships with teachers and with peers. Additionally, levels of recognition among teachers explained the large amount of variability in academic achievement and self-esteem, while higher levels of recognition among peers were a significant predictor of the respective students’ higher self-esteem. These deficits in recognition concern pedagogical practices that deprive these groups of students of opportunities and possibilities for equal participation in teaching and school life.

Abstract Background Cyber bullying (CB) is a repetitive use of information and communication technologies to harm other individuals. In recent years, CB has become more common among adolescents with the increase in availability of technological devices and technological developments. CB may harm the emotional, social and psychological development of the individuals of developmental age and social relations. CB is reported to be higher in people with low self-esteem. The aim of this study is to determine the frequency of CB among high school students, to examine some variables which may be related and to evaluate self-esteem. Methods This is a cross-sectional study conducted between 1 May-30 June 2018 among high school students in Sivrihisar. The study group consisted of 712 students which 60.1% were female, 39.9% were male and the mean of ages was 16.3±1.2 years (ranged 13-20). CB was evaluated with 2nd Revision of the Revised Cyber Bullying Inventory (RCBI-II) and self-esteem was evaluated with Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES). Chi-square, logistic regression and Spearman correlation analyses were used to analyze the data. Results The frequency of CB was 57.6% (n = 410). The frequency of CB was higher in men (OR:1.45,CI:1.01-2.1), the group who accept the friendship request of the people they don’t know in the virtual environment (OR:1.84,CI:1.22-2.78), who had problems with anyone on internet (OR:2.27,CI:1.54-3.35), who tells about something that can’t speak in real life (OR:2.13, CI:1.48-3.06), who share the problem orginated from online communication with anyone around (OR:1.48, CI:1.03-2.15). There was a positive weak correlation between the scores of the RCBI-II and RSES. Conclusions CB is a common problem among high school students. There is a weak negative relationship between the level of CB and self-esteem. It may be useful to increase the awareness of students, parents and teachers on the subject and to provide psychological support to students to reduce the level of CB. Key messages It is remarkable that the self-esteem of cyber-bullies is low. Risky behavior on the internet is an important risk factor for cyber bullying.

Abstract. Social relationships are vital for the proper development of humans, and along with physical activity, obesity, and self-esteem, they form a set of factors that may be able to feed each other; however, as far as the authors know, they have only been analyzed separately. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to carry out a multifactorial analysis that includes all the aforementioned variables. A total of 60 children between 7 and 13 years of age formed the sample of this study. The instruments used for the measurements of the different study variables were the PAQ-C, the Rosenberg self-esteem scale, and an adaptation of the Bull-S Test. Once all the data was collected, an analysis with Self-Organizing Maps was made, using the Matlab R2008a software and the SOM toolbox for Matlab. The results obtained in this work show the repercussion of Body Mass Index on the levels of self-esteem and social relations, and the possible mutual feedback between the last two factors.

The aim of investigations was to examine what upbringing styles and socio-economic parameters correlate with adolescents? unstable self-esteem. Self-esteem is an evaluative measure of self-concept whose stability in time reflects personality?s autonomy and integrity. Using the sample of 280 secondary school students, the SSES scale was administered twice, at a 30-day interval, the EMBU scale of upbringing styles, a questionnaire with general data on respondents and socioeconomic parameters. It proved that upbringing style and parental tenderness (of both father and mother) correlate with unstable self-esteem in adolescents. Significant correlation between upbringing styles and unstable self-esteem was also found in inconsistency, low control and protection on the part of father. Stable self-esteem is significantly negatively correlated with inconsistency of mother. Of diverse socioeconomic parameters, educational level of father and his profession are of critical importance for stable self-esteem. Upbringing styles produce greater influence on self-esteem level than socio-economic parameters do.
