Educational Data Mining plays a critical role in advancing the learning environment by contributing state-of-the-art methods, techniques, and applications. The recent development provides valuable tools for understanding the student learning environment by exploring and utilizing educational data using machine learning and data mining techniques. Modern academic institutions operate in a highly competitive and complex environment. Analyzing performance, providing high-quality education, strategies for evaluating the students’ performance, and future actions are among the prevailing challenges universities face. Student intervention plans must be implemented in these universities to overcome problems experienced by the students during their studies. In this systematic review, the relevant EDM literature related to identifying student dropouts and students at risk from 2009 to 2021 is reviewed. The review results indicated that various Machine Learning (ML) techniques are used to understand and overcome the underlying challenges; predicting students at risk and students drop out prediction. Moreover, most studies use two types of datasets: data from student colleges/university databases and online learning platforms. ML methods were confirmed to play essential roles in predicting students at risk and dropout rates, thus improving the students’ performance.

Student Performance Management is one of the key pillars of the higher education institutions since it directly impacts the student’s career prospects and college rankings. This paper follows the path of learning analytics and educational data mining by applying machine learning techniques in student data for identifying students who are at the more likely to fail in the university examinations and thus providing needed interventions for improved student performance. The Paper uses data mining approach with 10 fold cross validation to classify students based on predictors which are demographic and social characteristics of the students. This paper compares five popular machine learning algorithms Rep Tree, Jrip, Random Forest, Random Tree, Naive Bayes algorithms based on overall classifier accuracy as well as other class specific indicators i.e. precision, recall, f-measure. Results proved that Rep tree algorithm outperformed other machine learning algorithms in classifying students who are at more likely to fail in the examinations.

<p>According to modern era education is the key to achieve success in the future; it develops a human personality, thoughts, and social skills. The purpose of this research work is to focus on educational data mining (EDM) through machine learning algorithms. EDM means to discover hidden knowledge and pattern about student's performance. Machine learning can be useful to predict the learning outcomes of students. From last few years, several tools have been used to judge the student's performance from different points of view like the student's level, objectives, techniques, algorithms, and different methods. In this paper, predicting and analyzing student performance in secondary school is conducted using data mining techniques and machine learning algorithms such as Naive Bayes, Decision Tree algorithm J48, and Logistic Regression. For this the collection of dataset from "Secondary School" and then filtration is applying on desired values using WEKA, tool.</p>

The analysis of student performance involves data modelling that enables the formulation of hypotheses and insights about student behaviour and personality. We extract online behaviours as proxies to Extraversion and Conscientiousness, which have been proven to correlate with academic performance. The proxies of personalities we obtain yield significant (p<0.05) population correlation coefficients for traits against grade—0.846 for Extraversion and 0.319 for Conscientiousness. Furthermore, we demonstrate that a student’s e-behaviour and personality can be used with deep learning (LSTM) to predict and forecast whether a student is at risk of failing the year. Machine learning procedures followed in this report provide a methodology to timeously identify students who are likely to become at risk of poor academic performance. Using engineered online behaviour and personality features, we obtain a classification accuracy (κ) of students at risk of 0.51. Lastly, we show that we can design an intervention process using machine learning that supplements the existing performance analysis and intervention methods. The methodology presented in this article provides metrics that measure the factors that affect student performance and complement the existing performance evaluation and intervention systems in education.

Machine learning aims to give computers the ability to automatically learn from data. It can enable computers to make intelligent decisions by recognizing complex patterns from data. Through data mining, humongous amounts of data can be explored and analyzed to extract useful information and find interesting patterns. Classification, a supervised learning technique, can be beneficial in predicting class labels for test data by referring the already labeled classes from available training data set. In this chapter, educational data mining techniques are applied over a student dataset to analyze the multifarious factors causing alarmingly high number of dropouts. This work focuses on predicting students at risk of dropping out using five classification algorithms, namely, K-NN, naive Bayes, decision tree, random forest, and support vector machine. This can assist in improving pedagogical practices in order to enhance the performance of students predicted at risk of dropping out, thus reducing the dropout rates in higher education.

Educational Data Mining (EDM) is a research field that focuses on the application of data mining, machine learning, and statistical methods to detect patterns in large collections of educational data. Different machine learning techniques have been applied in this field over the years, but it has been recently that Deep Learning has gained increasing attention in the educational domain. Deep Learning is a machine learning method based on neural network architectures with multiple layers of processing units, which has been successfully applied to a broad set of problems in the areas of image recognition and natural language processing. This paper surveys the research carried out in Deep Learning techniques applied to EDM, from its origins to the present day. The main goals of this study are to identify the EDM tasks that have benefited from Deep Learning and those that are pending to be explored, to describe the main datasets used, to provide an overview of the key concepts, main architectures, and configurations of Deep Learning and its applications to EDM, and to discuss current state-of-the-art and future directions on this area of research.

<p class="Abstract"><span lang="EN-GB">In this competitive scenario of the educational system, the higher education institutes use data mining tools and techniques for academic improvement of the student performance and to prevent drop out. The authors collected data from three colleges of Assam, India. The data consists of socio-economic, demographic as well as academic information of three hundred students with twenty-four attributes. Four classification methods, the J48, PART, Random Forest and Bayes Network Classifiers were used. The data mining tool used was WEKA. The high influential attributes were selected using the tool. The internal assessment attribute in the continuous evaluation process makes the highest impact in the final semester results of the students in our dataset.  The results showed that random forest outperforms the other classifiers based on accuracy and classifier errors. Apriori algorithm was also used to find the association rule mining among all the attributes and the best rules were also displayed.<em></em></span></p>

Educational organizations are unique and play the utmost significant role in the development of any country. In the Educational database, due to the enormous volume of data for predicting student's achievement becomes more complicated. To upgrade a student's performance and triumph is more efficient in a practical way using Educational Data Mining Techniques. Data Mining Techniques could deliver favor and brunt to educators and academic institutions. The student's data ((i.e.) Name,10th %,12th cut off, CGPA, No of arrears, etc.) are gathered. Then, the datasets are imported into the Anaconda Navigator. Then, analysis and classification based on attributes of the students and the schemes are performed. Then using the prediction algorithm Naïve Bayes what are all the features the particular student is eligible for are predicted as placed. The student's input that has disparate data about their past and present academics report and then apply the Naïve Bayes algorithm using Anaconda Navigator to search the student's achievement for placement. A proposed methodology based on a classification approach to finding an improved estimation method for predicting the placement for students. This project can find the association for academic achievement of each particular student and their placement achievement in campus selection.

Now a day’s e-learning is smartly growing technology. This technology is more helpful for students to communicate with their professors through chats or emails. ELearning also removes the obstacle of physical presence of an Elearner. The main aim of this paper is to predict student performance in their final exams using different machine learning techniques. Information like attendance, marks, assignments, class participation, seminar, CA, projects and semester are collected to predict student performance. This prediction helps the instructors to analyze their students based on their performance. For that we have used WEKA tool for the prediction of the student performance. WEKA (Waikato Environment for Knowledge Analysis) is one of the data mining too which is used for the classification and clustering using data mining algorithms. This prediction helps the students and the staffs to know how much effort their students need to be put in their final exams to get good marks.
