Biomimetics has been used to improve performance in several fields of engineering. For flow fields, Murray’s Law has been used to explore branching of channels that carry reactants and products. The applicability of Murray’s Law to flow fields was examined here. The pin-type flow field was used to explore variations and conflicting performance objectives: pressure drop, manufacturability, standard deviation of flow velocity, and channel area. NSGA-II was used to solve a multiobjective optimization problem. Two designs, 3 × 3 and 11 × 11, were analyzed. Results that were similar to previous single-objective studies were obtained, confirming the efficacy of Murray’s Law. Computational fluid dynamics simulations were used to compare optimized and unoptimized designs. The maximum velocity for the 3 × 3 and 11 × 11 cases was lower when Murray’s Law was followed, indicating that it effectively slowed down the flow. Similarly, the flow was much more uniform: the standard deviation of flow velocity in the channels was 94% and 57% lower, respectively, for both cases, compared to the unoptimized designed. Finally, a method to select one optimal solution from a front of non-dominated solutions, the nearest point method, was demonstrated.

Split torque designs can offer significant advantages over the traditional planetary designs for helicopter transmissions. However, it has two unique properties, gap and phase differences, which result in the risk of unequal load sharing. Various methods have been proposed to eliminate the effect of gap and promote load sharing to a certain extent. In this paper, system design parameters will be optimized to change the phase difference, thereby further improving load sharing. A nonlinear dynamic model is established to measure the load sharing with dynamic mesh forces quantitatively. Afterwards, a multiobjective optimization of a reference split torque design is conducted with the promoting of load sharing property, lightweight, and safety considered as the objectives. The load sharing property, which is measured by load sharing coefficient, is evaluated under multiple operating conditions with dynamic analysis method. To solve the multiobjective model with NSGA-II, an improvement is done to overcome the problem of time consuming. Finally, a satisfied optimal solution is picked up as the final design from the Pareto optimal front, which achieves improvements in all the three objectives compared with the reference design.

Combined with the research of mass customization and cloud manufacturing mode, this paper discussed the production planning of mass customization enterprises in the context of cloud manufacturing in detail, analyzed the attribute index of manufacturing resource combination, and given a system considering the characteristics of batch production in mass customization and the decentralization of manufacturing resources in cloud manufacturing environment. Then, a multiobjective optimization model has been constructed according to the product delivery date, product cost, and product quality that customers care most about. The Pareto solution set of production plan has been obtained by using NSGA-II algorithm. This paper established a six-tier attribute index system evaluation model for the optimization of production planning scheme set of mass customization enterprises in cloud manufacturing environment. The weight coefficients of attribute indexes were calculated by combining subjective and objective weights with analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and entropy weight method. Finally, the combined weights calculated were applied to the improved TOPSIS method, and the optimal production planning scheme has been obtained by ranking. This paper validated the effectiveness and feasibility of the multiobjective model and NSGA-II algorithm by the example of company A. The Pareto effective solution has been obtained by solving the model. Then the production plan set has been sorted synthetically according to the comprehensive evaluation model, and the optimal production plan has been obtained.

Low-carbon production has become one of the top management objectives for every industry. In garment manufacturing, the material distribution process always generates high carbon emissions. In order to reduce carbon emissions and the number of operators to meet enterprises’ requirements to control the cost of production and protect the environment, the paths of material distribution were analyzed to find the optimal solution. In this paper, the model of material distribution to obtain minimum carbon emissions and vehicles (operators) was established to optimize the multi-target management in three different production lines (multi-line, U-shape two-line, and U-shape three-line), while the workstations were organized in three ways: in the order of processes, in the type of machines, and in the components of garment. The NSGA-II algorithm (non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II) was applied to obtain the results of this model. The feasibility of the model and algorithm was verified by the practice of men’s shirts manufacture. It could be found that material distribution of multi-line layout produced the least carbon emissions when the machines were arranged in the group of type.

In the production process of large-diameter seamless steel pipes, the blank heating quality before roll piercing has an important effect on whether subsequently conforming piping is produced. Obtaining accurate pipe blank heating temperature fields is the basis for establishing and optimizing a seamless pipe heating schedule. In this paper, the thermal process in a regenerative heating furnace was studied using fluent software, and the distribution laws of the flow field in the furnace and of the temperature field around the pipe blanks were obtained and verified experimentally. The heating furnace for pipe blanks was analyzed from multiple perspectives, including overall flow field, flow fields at different cross sections, and overall temperature field. It was found that the changeover process of the regenerative heating furnace caused the temperature in the upper part of the furnace to fluctuate. Under the pipe blanks, the gas flow was relatively thin, and the flow velocity was relatively low, facilitating the formation of a viscous turbulent layer and thereby inhibiting heat exchange around the pipe blanks. The mutual interference between the gas flow from burners and the return gas from the furnace tail flue led to different flow velocity directions at different positions, and such interference was relatively evident in the middle part of the furnace. A temperature “layering” phenomenon occurred between the upper and lower parts of the pipe blanks. The study in this paper has some significant usefulness for in-depth exploration of the characteristics of regenerative heating furnaces for steel pipes.

Abstract Multiobjective optimization is the optimization with several conflicting objective functions. However, it is generally tough to find an optimal solution that satisfies all objectives from a mathematical frame of reference. The main objective of this article is to present an improved proximal method involving quasi-distance for constrained multiobjective optimization problems under the locally Lipschitz condition of the cost function. An instigation to study the proximal method with quasi distances is due to its widespread applications of the quasi distances in computer theory. To study the convergence result, Fritz John’s necessary optimality condition for weak Pareto solution is used. The suitable conditions to guarantee that the cluster points of the generated sequences are Pareto–Clarke critical points are provided.

In this paper, a kind of multi-objective trajectory optimization method based on non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) is proposed for free-floating space manipulator. The aim is to optimize the motion path of the space manipulator with joint angle constraints and joint velocity constraints. Firstly, the kinematics and dynamics model are built. Secondly, the 3-5-3 piecewise polynomial is selected as interpolation method for trajectory planning of joint space. Thirdly, three objective functions are established to simultaneously minimize execution time, energy consumption and jerk of the joints. At last, the objective functions are combined with the NSGA-II algorithm to get the Pareto optimal solution set. The effectiveness of the mentioned method is verified by simulations.

The fault water inrush is a key factor which leads to tunnel construction in karst regions. Based on the fluid mechanics principles, the paper addresses a numer?ical coupled model for karst fault tunnel with COMSOL Multiphysics software. Besides, the Darcy law equation, Brinkman equation, and Navier-Stokes equation are inserted to stimulate the steady flow of aquifer, the non-linear seepage of fault and the free flow in tunnel excavating area in software, respectively. Then, the pres?sure and flow velocity in three flow fields are analyzed under different permeability ratios in numerical model. It is shown that the fault permeability is the key factor affecting water inrush, and that the pressure and flow velocity change visibly in adjacent domains between two flow fields.

In this work, an optimal design of a water distribution network is proposed for large irrigation networks. The proposed approach is built upon an existing optimization method (NSGA-II), but the authors are proposing its effective application in a new two-step optimization process. The aim of the paper is to demonstrate that not only is the choice of method important for obtaining good optimization results, but also how that method is applied. The proposed methodology utilizes as its most important feature the ensemble approach, in which more optimization runs cooperate and are used together. The authors assume that the main problem in finding the optimal solution for a water distribution optimization problem is the very large size of the search space in which the optimal solution should be found. In the proposed method, a reduction of the search space is suggested, so the final solution is thus easier to find and offers greater guarantees of accuracy (closeness to the global optimum). The method has been successfully tested on a large benchmark irrigation network.
