Using the personal ventilation systems may improve the thermal comfort sensation. At the University of Debrecen, a personal ventilation system was developed named ALTAIR. This paper presents the results of mean air velocity, turbulence grade, and draught measurements related to newly developed air terminal devices which are connected to the ALTAIR personal ventilation system. In order to define the measurement points it was essential to test the new air terminal devices (ATDs) in front of a black wall and smoke puffs. A series of measurements were carried out with isothermal air flow, mean air velocity, turbulence grade, and draught around the occupant head region in order to improve the thermal comfort sensation. Five different ATDs were analyzed.

It was proposed to use air flow screw straightened units in outlet pipe of the dust collectors to reduce the aerodynamic resistance of exhaust ventilation systems. It is allowed to decrease power consumption for their maintenance operation consequently. The article describes the results of experimental studies to evaluate its effectiveness by applying the tangential screw straightened unit within ventilation system. The obtained results showed that the use of this device allows reducing the aerodynamic resistance of the cyclone by 14.6%, and for counter-swirling flows’ dust collector (CSFC) by 17.2-23.6%. It was found that meanings of the aerodynamic resistance depend on value the share proportion of the flow entering into lower CSFC apparatus’ input.

Abstract Use of natural ventilation in the barn should lead to optimal microclimatic conditions over the entire space. In the summer, especially during hot weather, higher air velocity cools cows, which helps to avoid heat stress. The paper presents the results of studies on the evolution of air movement in a modernized free-stall barn of the Fermbet type with the natural ventilation system during the summer period. Based on measurements of velocity and direction of air flow (inside and outside the barn) and observations of smoke indicator, the movement of air masses in different parts of the barn was identified. Significant variations of air flow at different levels of the barn were found. These differences deviate from the accepted patterns of natural ventilation, which can be found in the literature. The range of a draught and stagnant air along with the conditions in which they are built was determined. On this basis, recommendations regarding the location of barns on the plots and the improvement of ventilation in summer were made.

The air diffuser is a very important component of any ventilation system, and the comfort level of ventilated space occupants depend among many other factors on properly designed and choice of diffusers. At present a large number of diffusers are produced to meet a different kind of requirements. One of the most efficient and very popular types of the diffuser is the vortex diffuser in which air flow has angular as well as translational velocity components. This paper investigates experimentally airflow characteristics of vortex ceiling diffuser and its effect on airflow in a ventilated space. Two thermal comfort criteria namely: mean age of the air and ventilation effectiveness have been used to predict the comfort zone inside the room. Effect of supply air velocity on the flow field is investigated and hence the on comfort and energy consumption. The results show that significant amount of energy can be saved by using vortex diffuser in reference to the other diffusers type. The values of the velocity decay coefficient were compared for different diameters of vortex diffuser.

The paper is oriented on the analysis of the ventilation systems in schoolrooms. Correct and sufficient ventilation of schoolrooms is very important because students and pupils spend in the schoolrooms the majority of their time in school. In our schools the ventilation is incorrect and insufficient. The biggest problem is winter period when the ventilation is provided only by opening the doors to corridor. This way, there is insufficient intake of oxygen, which causes distractibility and feeling of tiredness of pupils. In current schoolrooms we can use only natural ventilation and thus the schoolrooms have to be ventilated using windows. Therefore this research was focused on the comparison and the analysis of different systems of natural ventilation in schoolrooms. The experimental measurements were carried out in schoolroom, where the parameters of thermal comfort were measured in the different systems of natural ventilation with device Testo 480 which was connected to computer. Gained values of air temperature, air velocity and index PMV are presented in graphs. On the base of analysis of measured values were evaluated the systems of natural ventilation for schoolrooms. In the future, the mechanical ventilation in schoolrooms can be assumed, therefore the recommendation on modern energy saving system of mechanical ventilation is in the end of this paper.

The peculiarities of a person’s metabolism are related to the state of health, age, and other personality traits, which determines the need for a personal value of the ambient air temperature. Individualization of work and recreation of people requires the creation of local temperature zones in the room with the air temperature necessary for a particular person, which will increase labor productivity, reduce morbidity, since the stress of the human thermoregulation system will be minimal. In addition, the personalization of the microclimate in the workplace in the room with the creation of local temperature zones will allow you not to waste heat and electricity where it is not needed, creating additional opportunities for energy saving potential in the premises of the building. The article deals with the personalization of the operation of the ventilation system in the room with the formation of vertical conical air jets coming from the ceiling of the room to the workplace, considering the requirements of regulatory documents for the air velocity in the working area of the room.

There are ample literature studies available, focusing on hot-humid built environment, which have achieved an increase in thermal comfort conditions by proper installation of ventilation-systems. The present thermal comfort study has been carried out in the kitchen environment of a non-air-conditioned railway pantry car in Indian Railways. The purpose is to enhance thermal comfort level under the currently applied ventilation system inside the kitchen of pantry car by determining the standard effective temperature (SET) index. During the summer and winter seasons, a field study was carried out to obtain the value of air temperature, globe temperature, relative humidity, and air velocity inside the pantry car for estimation of the SET index. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis was used to obtain a better-modified case model of the pantry car kitchen for the improvement of thermal comfort. The design interventions for the pantry car kitchen were created, with emphasis on increasing energy efficiency based on low-power consumption air ventilation system. The study results indicated that, modified case-I model has a better ventilation design concept as compare to the existing and other models, which increased the air velocity and significantly decreased the air temperature inside the kitchen of pantry car at all cooking periods. A value of SET (28.6–30℃) was found with a comfortable thermal sensation within all cooking periods, which is better for the pantry car workers. This finding suggests a sustainable improvement in the thermal environment of the "non-air-conditioned" pantry car kitchen in the Indian Railways, which can be applied immediately.

In a closed space, appropriate thermal comfort and proper indoor air quality are extremely important in order to obtain the optimal work performance and to avoid health problems of the occupants. Using advanced personalized ventilation systems, different comfort needs can be locally satisfied even in case of warm environments. Thermal sensation and the subjective evaluation of indoor air quality of young and elderly people, men and women respectively, were studied in warm environment using advanced personalized ventilation system combined with total volume ventilation system. Using an advanced personalized ventilation system, 20 m3 h−1 air flow was alternately introduced by three air terminal devices built-in the desk and placed on a horizontal plane at the head level of the sitting subject. Thermal sensation was significantly cooler in case of young women in comparison with the other groups. Odor intensity was evaluated to be significantly lower in case of elderly women in comparison with the other groups. Evaluation of air freshness is in correlation with the general thermal sensation. Variation of the direction of the air velocity vector has a cooling side-effect, which, in warm environments, might be useful in order to improve the thermal comfort sensation. Practical application: From the basic factors that influence the thermal comfort sensation, air velocity is the one and only parameter that must be treated as a vector. The air flow velocity has an important effect on the convective heat quantity released by the human body, but the changes in the air velocity direction have a cooling side-effect. This cooling side-effect should be exploited properly in warm environments by advanced personalized ventilation systems to improve the thermal comfort sensation of the occupants without supplementary energy use.
