When the electromagnetic transients occur in a power transformer, an inrush current is generated in its winding. The inrush current not only affects the performance of the transformer windings, but also affects the lifetime of the transformer. Many factors affect the inrush current, the most influential ones among which are the closing phase angle and the residual flux. In this paper, a dry-type transformer simulation model is built to analyze the influence of the inrush current on the performance of transformer windings during no-load reclosing conditions. Firstly, the inrush current was generated in the transformer windings during the no-load reclosing operation under different residual fluxes. Secondly, the field-circuit coupling 3d finite element method is used to analyze the electromagnetic force at different locations of the transformer windings under the influence of different inrush currents. The results of winding structural parameter variations are obtained through electromagnetic-structural coupling simulation, and the electromagnetic forces are used as the input parameter for the structural analysis. Finally, the residual flux is generated by controlling the opening and closing angle of the transformer through the phase-controlled switch, and the winding electromechanical characteristics are tested under different residual fluxes. Finally, comparisons of the test and simulation results are drawn to verify the impact of the closing angle and residual flux on inrush current and the winding deformation during the no-load reclosing conditions.

The mathematical model of a shell-core power transformer’s magnetization branch is substantiated. By using the model, analytical expressions for the magnetizing current instantaneous values under the conditions of geomagnetic disturbances can be obtained. Quantitative assessments of the magnetizing inrush current amplitudes and durations versus the geomagnetic disturbance intensity are obtained. The dynamics of the power transformer magnetic system saturation transient and changes in the magnetization inrush current amplitudes and durations after a sudden occurrence of geomagnetic disturbances are shown. The error of estimating the magnetizing inrush current amplitudes under geomagnetic disturbances is determined based on comparison with experimental data.

Purpose – The paper presents two new algorithms of controlled switching the power transformer. The purpose of this paper is to obtain formulas that determine the moments of closing of the circuit breaker poles. The study contains projects of control systems for both algorithms. Design/methodology/approach – Mathematical formulas for the time instants of the breaker poles closing were developed on the basis of electric circuit theory and magnetic circuit theory. The presented systems were simulated using a model created in the Alternative Transients Program/Electromagnetic Transients Program software. Findings – Numerical simulations have proved that the shown systems properly perform the controlled switching carried out in accordance with the proposed algorithms. The times of the poles closing were correctly determined and the inrush currents were reduced to a level of the current of unloaded transformer. Originality/value – The results achieved are better than those shown in the literature. The solutions presented in the literature provide a reduction of inrush current to a value comparable to the rated current of the transformer, which is ten times greater than the no-load current. Additional achievement of the work is the development of analytical formulas that determine the times of the breaker poles closing.

An application of phase-angle-difference based algorithm with percentage differential relays is presented in this paper. In the situation where the transformer differential relay is under magnetizing inrush current, the algorithm will be utilized to block the process. In this study, the technique is modeled and implemented using Simulink integrated with MATLAB. The real circuit model of power transformer and current transformers are considered in the simulation model. The results confirmed the effectiveness of the technique in different operation modes; such as, magnetizing inrush currents, current transformers saturation and internal transformer faults.

Due to the increasing requirements for the reliability of electrical power supply and associated apparatus, it is necessary to provide a detailed analysis of the overvoltage risk of power transformer insulation systems and equipment connected to their terminals. Exposure of transformer windings to overvoltages is the result of the propagation condition of electromagnetic waves in electrical networks and transformer windings. An analysis of transformer winding responses to transients in power systems is of particular importance, especially when protection against surges by typical overvoltage protection systems is applied. The analysis of internal overvoltages in transformers during a typical transient related to switching operations and selected failures is of great importance, particularly to assess the overvoltage exposure of insulation systems in operating conditions. The random nature of overvoltage phenomena in electrical networks implies the usage of computer simulations for the analysis of overvoltage exposures of electrical devices in operation. This article presents the analysis of the impact of transient phenomena in a model of a medium-voltage electrical network during switching operations and ground faults on overvoltages in the internal insulation systems of transformer windings. The basis of the analysis is simulations of overvoltages in the windings, made in the Electromagnetic Transients Program/Alternative Transients Program (EMTP/ATP) using a model with lumped parameters of transformer windings. The analysis covers the impact of the cable line length and the ground fault resistance value on internal overvoltage distributions.

To meet the complex electromagnetic environmental conditions of power transformer on-site, an optimization algorithm of the closing time based on fuzzy reasoning is proposed. It can not only improve the robustness and stability of inrush currents inhibition of algorithm, but also can be a theoretical basis for the research of transformer inrush current restraining method.

AbstractAriel’s ambitious goal to survey a quarter of known exoplanets will transform our knowledge of planetary atmospheres. Masses measured directly with the radial velocity technique are essential for well determined planetary bulk properties. Radial velocity masses will provide important checks of masses derived from atmospheric fits or alternatively can be treated as a fixed input parameter to reduce possible degeneracies in atmospheric retrievals. We quantify the impact of stellar activity on planet mass recovery for the Ariel mission sample using Sun-like spot models scaled for active stars combined with other noise sources. Planets with necessarily well-determined ephemerides will be selected for characterisation with Ariel. With this prior requirement, we simulate the derived planet mass precision as a function of the number of observations for a prospective sample of Ariel targets. We find that quadrature sampling can significantly reduce the time commitment required for follow-up RVs, and is most effective when the planetary RV signature is larger than the RV noise. For a typical radial velocity instrument operating on a 4 m class telescope and achieving 1 m s−1 precision, between ~17% and ~ 37% of the time commitment is spent on the 7% of planets with mass Mp < 10 M⊕. In many low activity cases, the time required is limited by asteroseismic and photon noise. For low mass or faint systems, we can recover masses with the same precision up to ~3 times more quickly with an instrumental precision of ~10 cm s−1.

In this paper, performance analysis of power system network is carried out by injecting the inter-turn fault at the power transformer. The injection of inter-turn fault generates the inrush current in the network. The power system network consists of transformer, current transformer, potential transformer, circuit breaker, isolator, resistance, inductance, loads, and generating source. The fault detection and termination related to inrush current has some drawbacks and limitations such as slow convergence rate, less stability and more distortion with the existing methods. These drawbacks motivate the researchers to overcome the drawbacks with new proposed methods using wavelet transformation with sample data control and fuzzy logic controller. The wavelet transformation is used to diagnose the fault type but contribute lesser for fault termination; due to that, sample data of different signals are collected at different frequencies. Further, the analysis of collected sample data is assessed by using Z-transformation and fuzzy logic controller for fault termination. The stability, total harmonic distortion and convergence rate of collected sample data among all three methods (wavelet transformation, Z-transformation and fuzzy logic controller) are compared for fault termination by using linear regression analysis. The complete performance of fault diagnosis along with fault termination has been analyzed on Simulink. It is observed that after fault injection at power transformer, fault recovers faster under fuzzy logic controller in comparison with Z-transformation followed by wavelet transformation due to higher stability, less total harmonic distortion and faster convergence.
