Locusts are agricultural pests found in many parts of the world. Developing efficient and accurate locust information acquisition techniques helps in understanding the relation between locust distribution density and structural changes in locust communities. It also helps in understanding the hydrothermal and vegetation growth conditions that affect locusts in their habitats in various parts of the world as well as in providing rapid and accurate warnings on locust plague outbreak. This study is a preliminary attempt to explore whether the batch normalization-based convolutional neural network (CNN) model can be applied used to perform automatic classification of East Asian migratory locust (AM locust), Oxya chinensis (rice locusts), and cotton locusts. In this paper, we present a way of applying the CNN technique to identify species and instars of locusts using the proposed ResNet-Locust-BN model. This model is based on the ResNet architecture and involves introduction of a BatchNorm function before each convolution layer to improve the network’s stability, convergence speed, and classification accuracy. Subsequently, locust image data collected in the field were used as input to train the model. By performing comparison experiments of the activation function, initial learning rate, and batch size, we selected ReLU as the preferred activation function. The initial learning rate and batch size were set to 0.1 and 32, respectively. Experiments performed to evaluate the accuracy of the proposed ResNet-Locust-BN model show that the model can effectively distinguish AM locust from rice locusts (93.60% accuracy) and cotton locusts (97.80% accuracy). The model also performed well in identifying the growth status information of AM locusts (third-instar (77.20% accuracy), fifth-instar (88.40% accuracy), and adult (93.80% accuracy)) with an overall accuracy of 90.16%. This is higher than the accuracy scores obtained by using other typical models: AlexNet (73.68%), GoogLeNet (69.12%), ResNet 18 (67.60%), ResNet 50 (80.84%), and VggNet (81.70%). Further, the model has good robustness and fast convergence rate.

Due to powerful data representation ability, deep learning has dramatically improved the state-of-the-art in many practical applications. However, the utility highly depends on fine-tuning of hyper-parameters, including learning rate, batch size, and network initialization. Although many first-order adaptive methods (e.g., Adam, Adagrad) have been proposed to adjust learning rate based on gradients, they are susceptible to the initial learning rate and network architecture. Therefore, the main challenge of using deep learning in practice is how to reduce the cost of tuning hyper-parameters. To address this, we propose a heuristic zeroth-order learning rate method, Adacomp, which adaptively adjusts the learning rate based only on values of the loss function. The main idea is that Adacomp penalizes large learning rates to ensure the convergence and compensates small learning rates to accelerate the training process. Therefore, Adacomp is robust to the initial learning rate. Extensive experiments, including comparison to six typically adaptive methods (Momentum, Adagrad, RMSprop, Adadelta, Adam, and Adamax) on several benchmark datasets for image classification tasks (MNIST, KMNIST, Fashion-MNIST, CIFAR-10, and CIFAR-100), were conducted. Experimental results show that Adacomp is not only robust to the initial learning rate but also to the network architecture, network initialization, and batch size.

The leader must be able to formulate and bring closer to the employees the vision of the organization and its future goal, to which all shall aspire. He should pay attention not to the "letter" but to the "spirit" of this approach.

In the 2010s, the world is seemingly awash with waves of populism and anti-immigration movements. Yet virtually all discussions, owing to the prevailing Eurocentric perspective, bypass East Asia (more accurately, Northeast Asia) and the absence of strong populist or anti-immigration discourses or politics. This chapter presents a comparative and historical account of East Asian exceptionalism in the matter of migration crisis, especially given the West’s embrace of an insider-outsider dichotomy superseding the class- and nation-based divisions of the post–World War II era. The chapter also discusses some nascent articulations of Western-style populist discourses in Northeast Asia, and concludes with the potential for migration crisis in the region.

Aphids are small insects that feed on plant sap, and they belong to a superfamily called Aphoidea. They are among the major pests causing damage to citrus crops in most parts of the world. Precise and automatic identification of aphids is needed to understand citrus pest dynamics and management. This article presents a dataset that contains 665 healthy and unhealthy lemon leaf images. The latter are leaves with the presence of aphids, and visible white spots characterize them. Moreover, each image includes a set of annotations that identify the leaf, its health state, and the infestation severity according to the percentage of the affected area on it. Images were collected manually in real-world conditions in a lemon plant field in Junín, Manabí, Ecuador, during the winter, by using a smartphone camera. The dataset is called LeLePhid: lemon (Le) leaf (Le) image dataset for aphid (Phid) detection and infestation severity. The data can facilitate evaluating models for image segmentation, detection, and classification problems related to plant disease recognition.

Despite long historical ties, post-colonial relations between India and Myanmar have fluctuated between magnanimity and mistrust. While India often stood for high moral grounds and promotion of democracy, it did so at the cost of losing Myanmar to China. This affected both India and Myanmar adversely: while New Delhi’s economic, energy and security interests were hurt, isolated Yangon became more China-dependent. However, since the early 1990s, domestic developments in Myanmar and post-Cold War structural changes in the world order necessitated conditions for cooperation and mutual gains. It appears that blatant domestic suppression in, and international seclusion of, Myanmar is not desirable. Having witnessed two eras of magnanimity and mistrust, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Myanmar in 2012 heralds a prospective era of market interdependence while opening Pandora’s box: can India get a better share of Myanmar’s commercial possibilities without compromising its core interests in promoting democracy, development and diaspora protection?

Scholarship on nineteenth-century missionary encounters emphasizes either how native converts “indigenized” Christian doctrine and practice, or how missionaries acted as agents of Western imperial expansion. These approaches, however, overlook the ways both missionaries and converts understood Protestant Christianity as a call to transnational community. This essay examines the ways that American Protestants and East Asian Christian converts looked for ways to build a transpacific communion. Despite radically different understandings of Christian scripture, and despite the geopolitics of empire, U.S. and East Asian Protestants nevertheless strove to bring together diverse theologies and experiences into a loosely defined, transnational Protestant community.

Thelastomatidae is one of the largest families parasitizing insects, within the order Oxyurida. In this work we reported parasitism in nymphs and adults of Neocurtilla claraziana by two different thelastomatid species as a part of a field survey on agricultural pests. Nymphs and adults of this insect were isolated from grasslands of Buenos Aires State, Argentina using a tensio-active solution. The nematode species Gryllophila skrjabini Sergiev, 1923 and Cephalobellus magalhaesi Schwenk, 1926 are briefly described and measurements are given. Both nematodes are reported for the first time in Argentina with C. magalhaesi being the second isolation of this species in the world. Neocurtilla clarziana is a new host record for G. skrjabini.
