Academia–enterprise collaboration is understood as a determinant that improves innovation and competitiveness. The mechanisms by which this collaboration occurs have awakened increasing interest among academics, as well as in the business sector. This research aims to identify how open innovation communities can mediate the academia-enterprise relationship, as well as the factors that are more affected by this mediation. Based on the literature, the article addresses the definition of open innovation communities (OICs), university–enterprise cooperation, knowledge transfer (KT), as well as an understanding of OICs as a mechanism for academia–enterprise transfer. An analysis of twelve OICs, conformed by professors, students, graduates, and experts from a Colombian higher education institution is performed. For the data analysis, a factor analysis involving structural equation modeling is carried out. Our results highlight the most important characteristics to take into account in the study of knowledge transfer when OICs are involved, and they also indicate the level of connection between these factors.

Purpose As users often lack the motivation to contribute their ideas and knowledge in open innovation communities, it is necessary to identify the determinants of users’ contribution. This paper aims to examine users’ contribution in open innovation communities based on the social capital theory. Design/methodology/approach The authors collected 474 valid responses from a survey and adopted structural equation modeling (SEM) to conduct data analysis. Findings The results indicated that social interaction, which includes informational and emotional interaction, has a significant effect on social capital, which in turn affects users’ contribution. Research limitations/implications The results imply that companies need to facilitate users’ interactions and develop social capital to promote their contribution in open innovation communities. Originality/value Although previous research has found the effect of individual motivations such as perceived benefits and behavioural control on innovation community users’ behaviour, it has seldom considered the effect of social capital embedded within the social relationship networking. This research tries to fill the gap and the results disclosed the mechanism underlying open innovation community users’ contribution.

Purpose This study aims to investigate the relationship among knowledge transfer enablers, knowledge transfer process, absorptive capacity and innovation performance in the context of Indian international joint ventures (IJVs). These elements are woven with the thread of dynamic capabilities theory (DCT) into an integrated framework. Design/methodology/approach Data analysis is conducted on a quantitative survey of 196 IJVs with partial least squares structural equation modeling as the statistical technique. Findings Co-learning strategy, collaborative trust culture, information technology-based resources and systems and organizational structural design are found to be significant knowledge transfer enablers. Absorptive capacity has a complementary partial mediation effect on the positive relationship between knowledge transfer and innovation performance of Indian IJVs. Research limitations/implications The study has pioneered in explicating the criticality of IJV’s internal dynamics to cope with the global market dynamism in a much needed Indian context. Practitioners must focus on building dynamic capabilities in IJVs to make them sustainably competitive, as proposed and evaluated by this study. Further, IJV managers need to strategize their resources, routines and structure dynamically to foster knowledge transfer and innovativeness. Originality/value The comprehensive model on DCT offered by this study is rare to match in literature with a completely new context, which is the need of the hour.

The authors attempted to investigate how to resolve the growing work-life balance issue occurring due to COVID-19 Pandemic in the higher education sector. On the premise of prominent literature, the study conceptualized a framework to test if supervisor support and employee`s proactive work behavior could help address the work-life balance issue. Through applying the quantitative approach, the study collected data from employees working in a higher education institution in the UK. Results of the structural equation modeling found significant association and influence of supervisor support and work-life balance. The study also found a strong affiliation between proactive work behavior and work-life balance. However, proactive work behavior did not moderate supervisor support and work-life balance relationship. The study concluded that both supervisor support and proactive work behavior could be vital in helping employees to achieve their work goals effectively and efficiently without compromising their work-life balance. The study forwards prominent implications to guide practitioners, policymakers and researchers in this domain.

All customers who use social media to share their experience through their positive or negative comments related with goods and services used as well as those who browse social media for getting reference to arrive at a decision to buy or choose are social customers. In the above backdrop the researchers have tried to highlight following issues: (i) definition of Social Customers, (ii) impact of Social media as a reference group on social customer. The researchers have conducted an empirical study and analyzed the data through Structural equation modeling and provided guidelines to marketers on the impact of social media in general and e-WOM in particular on buying behavior of social customers.

The aim of this study is to empirically explore the influences of a set of key technological, organizational, and environmental (TOE) factors on the achievement of a strategic promised benefit of private portals, which is competitive advantage. Such exploration has not received attention in the web-based information systems’ area. To explore these influences, a theoretical model was developed on the basis of the information system adoption’s literature. The model postulates the TOE factors as crucial antecedents to the realization of competitive advantage. To validate the theoretical model, a questionnaire was constructed by focusing on the most precise measurements items for the TOE factors. A total of 241 responses were collected from the private portal’s users in a higher education institution in Saudi Arabia. The structural equation modeling approach was applied for conducting the required assessment. The results demonstrate that among the tested TOE factors, the relative advantage of private portals and the competitive pressure to adopt them have positive impacts on the achievement of competitive advantage. The empirical evidences produced by this study provide more clarifications about the factors that should be managed carefully to gain competitive advantage from the adopted information system innovations.

Despite the well-recognised contribution of design to business, practitioners still find it challenging to manage design assets. Given that one cannot manage a business without measuring these assets, researchers and practitioners deem that the lack of a practical measuring tool for design is the cause of this unfavorable situation. Hence, establishing relevant criteria for measuring design effectiveness is essential for developing the tools. However, criteria must anticipate key business outcomes in order to demonstrate effectiveness, and to propose actionable items. Whether the outcome is sales figures or customer satisfaction survey results, the criteria should clearly link with business goals. Also, the technologies in the Fourth Industrial Revolution facilitate the quantification of customer behaviour related to business performance, such as lingering time on the website for shopping. In this context, statistical understanding of design elements is critical for determining appropriate strategies in the era of digitalised data. By utilising a Service Blueprint, this study also proposes a novel approach to tackle current challenges regarding the open innovation process. Since appropriately-developed design elements are the prerequisite of successful measurement, this study extracts the elements through in-depth interviews, and examines them quantitatively with existing business theory. As a result, design elements for the food and beverage service business are confirmed by using the Structural Equation Modeling.

Purpose This paper aims to explore the determinants of firms’ attitudes to R&D cooperation with universities with the goal to propose a model of knowledge transfer university-firm. Design/methodology/approach By understanding university-industry cooperation as a process, the model in this study is based on two factors: the “promoter of university-industry relations” (PUIR) and a technological system that is able to match the research supply of universities with the demand for innovation of the firms. A total of 375 firms, 420 research groups and 18 experts in knowledge transfer from Spain, Portugal and France have been involved in this study. Findings This study provides the first evidences of the relation between the number of matches’ demand-supply of research, the number of university-firm relations and the willingness to cooperate; all of these presented in the knowledge transfer model. Results also reinforce the utility of the role of PUIR and the matching system in the open innovation process. Research limitations/implications However, more evidences are necessary to get a complete validation of the model. In the future, the continuous utilization of the matching system by the PUIRs of the selected regions will allow the authors to evaluate how well the system is working by analysing the possible increases in formal collaboration university-firm in the area of R&D. Originality/value This study contributes to the literature through aligning the open innovation and intellectual capital theories in the specific and complex context of university-firm collaboration. Also, little research regarding this topic has been noticed in SUDOE European Union (EU) countries (SUDOE is an EU territorial cooperation programme that supports regional development by funding transnational projects).

The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of the concept of optimal distinctive open innovation as mediating variable in relationship between Person-Job Fit and Person-Organization Fit and work innovation behavior and lecturer performance. The method used in this study are through Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) analysis with the object of the study conducted on 193 lecturers determined by purposive random sampling technique at private universities in Central Java. The findings showed significant effects of person-organization fit on the optimal distinctive open innovation and on innovative work behavior. Moreover, person-job fit is of significant on optimal distinctive open innovation, and on innovative work behavior. In testing the effect of mediating variables, optimal distinctive open innovation is of significant on innovative work behavior which in turn affecting the significant influence of innovative work behavior on lecturer performance. The findings emphasize that the success-oriented way of thinking requires the expertise of employees to always create creative, superior and unique ideas. Private universities must always pay attention to the principles of industrial management and professionalism in human resource management, in order to survive and develop. Superior skills will produce superior performance, and superior skills are distinctive competence that supports the company to achieve positional advantage.

This study aimed to reduce the university-industry gap from the perspective of leadership and entrepreneurship. The focus of this research is to assess the influence of transformational leadership of manager on academic staff’s entrepreneurial orientation and to pave the way for identifying potential opportunities, generating new ideas in industrial relation, and to subsequently narrow the university-industry problem. In order to understand the contribution of leadership within the university–industry context, this research reviewed the effect of transformational leadership style on entrepreneurial orientation and then examined the existing relationship. The population of this study is the academic staff of a public university in Iran. A research sample of 295 academic staff was chosen by using stratified sampling technique. Technical analysis of data applied Structural Equation Modeling in two step: measurement model for testing the construct validity of questionnaires and structural model for hypothesizes testing with mathematical program. The results showed that transformational leadership was the best predictor for entrepreneurial orientation. The research findings in this study revealed that the quality of transformational leadership within an organization had an effect on the entrepreneurial orientation. One of the managerial implications of this study is to reinforce the recognition and basis of enhancing entrepreneurial orientation by transformational leadership.

This study proposes a model to analyze the relationship between leadership, intellectual capital (human, structural, and relational), and their contribution to economic renewal. The study contributes to the literature and higher education institution (HEI) management, by examining empirically and in greater depth, the antecedents and determinants of this problem. This study applies variance-based structural equation modeling, using partial least square on a sample of 195 academics from 52 countries. The results show that leadership has a positive and direct impact on human, structural, and relational capital, and that human capital has positive and direct impact on the structural and relational capital of the studied HEIs. Hence, we found that only the structural and relational capital of the HEIs have positive and direct impact on the contribution to economic renewal.
