The three-dimensional vibration of a functionally graded sandwich rectangular plate on an elastic foundation with normal boundary conditions was analyzed using a semi-analytical method based on three-dimensional elasticity theory. The material properties of the sandwich plate varied with thickness according to the power law distribution. Two types of functionally graded material (FGM) sandwich plates were investigated in this paper: one with a homogeneous core and FGM facesheets, and another with homogeneous panels and an FGM core. Various displacements of the plates were created using an improved Fourier series consisting of a standard Fourier cosine series along with a certain number of closed-form auxiliary functions satisfying the essential boundary conditions. The vibration behavior of the FGM sandwich plate, including the natural frequencies and mode shapes, was obtained using the Ritz method. The effectiveness and accuracy of the suggested technique were fully verified by comparing the natural frequencies of sandwich plates with results from investigations of other functionally graded sandwich rectangular plates in the literature. A parametric study, including elastic parameters, foundation parameters, power law exponents, and layer thickness ratios, was performed, and some new results are presented.

In this paper, a refined quasi-three-dimensional shear deformation theory for thermo-mechanical analysis of functionally graded sandwich plates resting on a two-parameter (Pasternak model) elastic foundation is developed. Unlike the other higher-order theories the number of unknowns and governing equations of the present theory is only four against six or more unknown displacement functions used in the corresponding ones. Furthermore, this theory takes into account the stretching effect due to its quasi-three-dimensional nature. The boundary conditions in the top and bottoms surfaces of the sandwich functionally graded plate are satisfied and no correction factor is required. Various types of functionally graded material sandwich plates are considered. The governing equations and boundary conditions are derived using the principle of virtual displacements. Numerical examples, selected from the literature, are illustrated. A good agreement is obtained between numerical results of the refined theory and the reference solutions. A parametric study is presented to examine the effect of the material gradation and elastic foundation on the deflections and stresses of functionally graded sandwich plate resting on elastic foundation subjected to thermo-mechanical loading.

AbstractThis paper deals with the static response of simply supported functionally graded material (FGM) viscoelastic sandwich plates subjected to transverse uniform loads. The FG sandwich plates are considered to be resting on Pasternak's elastic foundations. The sandwich plate is assumed to consist of a fully elastic core sandwiched by elastic-viscoelastic FGM layers. Material properties are graded according to a power-law variation from the interfaces to the faces of the plate. The equilibrium equations of the FG sandwich plate are given based on a trigonometric shear deformation plate theory. Using Illyushin's method, the governing equations of the viscoelastic sandwich plate can be solved. Parametric study on the bending analysis of FG sandwich plates is being investigated. These parameters include (i) power-law index, (ii) plate aspect ratio, (iii) side-to-thickness ratio, (iv) loading type, (v) foundation stiffnesses, and (vi) time parameter.

AbstractFree vibration analysis of functionally graded (FG) curved panels integrated with piezoelectric layers under various boundary conditions is studied. A panel with two opposite edges is simply supported, and arbitrary boundary conditions at the other edges are considered. Two different models of material property variations based on the power law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents and the exponential law distribution of the material properties through the thickness are considered. Based on the three-dimensional theory of elasticity, an approach combining the state space method and the differential quadrature method (DQM) is used. For the simply supported boundary conditions, closed-form solution is given by making use of the Fourier series expansion, and applying the differential quadrature method to the state space formulations along the axial direction, new state equations about state variables at discrete points are obtained for the other cases such as clamped or free-end conditions. Natural frequencies of the hybrid curved panels are presented by solving the eigenfrequency equation, which can be obtained by using edges boundary conditions in this state equation. The results obtained for only FGM shell is verified by comparing the natural frequencies with the results obtained in the literature.

Functionally graded square and rectangular plates of different thicknesses placed on the elastic foundation modeled according to the Winkler-Pasternak theory have been studied. The thermal and mechanical characteristics, apart from Poisson’s ratio, are considered to continuously differ through the thickness of the studied material as stated in a power-law distribution. A mathematical model of functionally graded plate which include interaction with elastic foundation is defined. The equilibrium and stability equations are derived using high order shear deformation theory that comprises various kinds of shape function and the von Karman nonlinearity. A new analytically integrable shape function has been introduced. Hamilton’s principle has been applied with the purpose of acquiring the equations of motion. An analytical method for identifying both natural frequencies and critical buckling temperature for cases of linear and nonlinear temperature change through the plate thickness has been established. In order to verify the derived theoretical results on numerical examples, an original program code has been implemented within software MATLAB. Critical buckling temperature and natural frequencies findings are shown below. Previous scientific research and papers confirms that presented both the theoretical formulation and the numerical results are accurate. The comparison has been made between newly established findings based on introduced shape function and the old findings that include 13 different shape functions available in previously published articles. The final part of the research provides analysis and conclusions related to the impact of the power-law index, foundation stiffness, and temperature gradient on critical buckling temperature and natural frequencies of the functionally graded plates.

In this paper, free vibrations of Porous Functionally Graded Beams (P-FGBs), resting on two-parameter elastic foundations, and exposed to three forms of thermal field, uniform, linear, and sinusoidal, are studied using a Refined Higher-order shear Deformation Theory. The present theory accounts for shear deformation by considering a constant transverse displacement and a higher-order variation of the axial displacement through the thickness of the beam. The stress-free boundary conditions are satisfied on the upper and lower surfaces of the beam without using any shear correction factor. The material properties are temperature-dependent and vary continuously through the depth direction of the beam, based on a modified power-law rule, in which two kinds of porosity distributions, uniform, and nonuniform, through the cross-section area of the beam, are considered. Hamilton’s principle is applied to obtain governing equations of motion, which are solved using a Navier-type analytical solution for simply supported P-FGB. Numerical examples are proposed and discussed in detail, to prove the effect of the thermal environment, the porosity distribution, and the influence of several parameters such as the power-law index, porosity volume fraction, slenderness ratio, and elastic foundation parameters on the critical buckling temperatures and the natural frequencies of the P-FGB.

In this paper, vibration characteristics of rotating functionally graded cylindrical shell resting on Winkler and Pasternak elastic foundations have been investigated. These shells are fabricated from functionally graded materials. Shell dynamical equations are derived by using the Hamilton variational principle and the Langrangian functional framed from the shell strain and kinetic energy expressions. Elastic foundations, namely Winkler and Pasternak moduli are inducted in the tangential direction of the shell. The rotational motions of the shells are due to the Coriolis and centrifugal acceleration as well as the hoop tension produced in the rotating case. The wave propagation approach in standard eigenvalue form has been employed in order to derive the characteristic frequency equation describing the natural frequencies of vibration in rotating functionally graded cylindrical shell. The complex exponential functions, with the axial modal numbers that depend on the boundary conditions stated at edges of a cylindrical shell, have been used to compute the axial modal dependence. In our new investigation, frequency spectra are obtained for circumferential wave number, length-to-radius ratio, height-to-radius ratio with simply supported–simply supported and clamped–clamped boundary conditions without elastic foundation. Also, the effect of elastic foundation on the rotating cylindrical shells is examined with the simply supported–simply supported edge. To check the validity of the present method, the fundamental natural frequencies of non-rotating isotropic and functionally graded cylindrical shells are compared with the open literature. Also, a comparison is made for infinitely long rotating with the earlier published paper.

This paper investigates the free vibration and dynamic response of functionally graded sandwich beams resting on an elastic foundation under the action of a moving harmonic load. The governing equation of motion of the beam, which includes the effects of shear deformation and rotary inertia based on the Timoshenko beam theory, is derived from Lagrange’s equations. The Ritz and Newmark methods are employed to solve the equation of motion for the free and forced vibration responses of the beam with different boundary conditions. The results are presented in both tabular and graphical forms to show the effects of layer thickness ratios, boundary conditions, length to height ratios, spring constants, etc. on natural frequencies and dynamic deflections of the beam. It was found that increasing the spring constant of the elastic foundation leads to considerable increase in natural frequencies of the beam; while the same is not true for the dynamic deflection. Additionally, very large dynamic deflection occurs for the beam in resonance under the harmonic moving load.

An improved transverse shear stiffness for vibration and buckling analysis of functionally graded sandwich plates based on the first-order shear deformation theory is proposed in this paper. The transverse shear stress obtained from the in-plane stress and equilibrium equation allows to analytically derive an improved transverse shear stiffness and associated shear correction factor of the functionally graded sandwich plate. Sandwich plates with functionally graded faces and both homogeneous hardcore and softcore are considered. The material property is assumed to be isotropic at each point and vary through the plate thickness according to a power-law distribution of the volume fraction of the constituents. Equations of motion and boundary conditions are derived from Hamilton’s principle. The Navier-type solutions are obtained for simply supported boundary conditions, and exact formulae are proposed and compared with the existing solutions to verify the validity of the developed model. Numerical results are obtained for simply supported functionally graded sandwich plates made of three sets of material combinations of metal and ceramic, Al/Al2O3, Al/SiC and Al/WC to investigate the effects of the power-law index, thickness ratio of layer, material contrast on the shear correction factors, natural frequencies and critical buckling loads as well as load–frequency curves.
