This paper investigates the deformation mechanism and energy absorption behaviour of 316 L triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) structures with uniform and graded wall thicknesses fabricated by the selective laser melting technique. The uniform P-surface TPMS structure presents a single-level stress plateau for energy absorption and a localized diagonal shear cell failure. A graded strategy was employed to break such localized geometrical deformation to improve the overall energy absorption and to provide a double-level function. Two segments with different wall thicknesses separated by a barrier layer were designed along the compression direction while keeping the same relative density as the uniform structure. The results show that the crushing of the cells of the graded P-surface TPMS structure occurs first within the thin segment and then propagates to the thick segment. The stress–strain response shows apparent double stress plateaus. The stress level and length of each plateau can be adjusted by changing the wall thickness and position of the barrier layer between the two segments. The total energy absorption of the gradient TPMS structure was also found slightly higher than that of the uniform TPMS counterparts. The gradient design of TPMS structures may find applications where the energy absorption requires a double-level feature or a warning function.

Targeting biomedical applications, Triply Periodic Minimal Surface (TPMS) gyroid sheet-based structures were successfully manufactured for the first time by Electron Beam Melting in two different production Themes, i.e., inputting a zero (Wafer Theme) and a 200 µm (Melt Theme) wall thickness. Initial assumption was that in both cases, EBM manufacturing should yield the structures with similar mechanical properties as in a Wafer-mode, as wall thickness is determined by the minimal beam spot size of ca 200 µm. Their surface morphology, geometry, and mechanical properties were investigated by means of electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray Computed Tomography (XCT), and uniaxial tests (both compression and tension). Application of different manufacturing Themes resulted in specimens with different wall thicknesses while quasi-elastic gradients for different Themes was found to be of 1.5 GPa, similar to the elastic modulus of human cortical bone tissue. The specific energy absorption at 50% strain was also similar for the two types of structures. Finite element simulations were also conducted to qualitatively analyze the deformation process and the stress distribution under mechanical load. Simulations demonstrated that in the elastic regime wall, regions oriented parallel to the load are primarily affected by deformation. We could conclude that gyroids manufactured in Wafer and Melt Themes are equally effective in mimicking mechanical properties of the bones.

In recent years, cellular structures have attracted great deal of attention of many researchers due to their unique properties like exhibiting high strength at low density and great energy absorption. Also, the applications of cellular structures (or lattice structures) such as wing airfoil, tire, fiber and implant, are mainly used in aerospace, automotive, textile and biomedical industries respectively. In this investigation, the idea of using cellular structures in pipes made of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) material was focused on and four different pipe types were designed as honeycomb structure model, straight rib pattern model, hybrid version of the first two models and fully solid model. Subsequently, these models were 3D printed by using FDM method and these lightweight pipes were subjected to compression tests in order to obtain stress-strain curves of these structures. Mechanical properties of lightweight pipes like elasticity modulus, specific modulus, compressive strength, specific compressive strength, absorbed energy and specific absorbed energy were calculated and compared to each other. Moreover, deformation modes were recorded during all compression tests and reported as well. The results showed that pipe models including lattice wall thickness could be preferred for the applications which don’t require too high compressive strength and their specific energy absorption values were notably capable to compete with fully solid pipe structures. In particular, rib shape lattice structure had the highest elongation while the fully solid one possessed worst ductility. Lastly, it is pointed out that 3D printing method provides a great opportunity to have a foresight about production of uncommon parts by prototyping.
