The aim of this paper is to investigate and compare the stress distribution of a reconstructed pelvis under different screw forces in a typical walking pattern. Computer-aided design models of the pelvic bones and sacrum made based on computer tomography images and individually designed implants are the basis for creating finite element models, which are imported into ABAQUS software. The screws provide compression loading and bring the implant and pelvic bones together. The sacrum is fixed at the level of the L5 vertebrae. The variants of strength analyses are carried out with four different screw pretension forces. The loads equivalent to the hip joint reaction forces arising during moderate walking are applied to reference points based on the centres of the acetabulum. According to the results of the performed analyses, the optimal and critical values of screw forces are estimated for the current model. The highest stresses among all the models occurred in the screws and implant. As soon as the screw force increases up to the ultimate value, the bone tissue might be locally destroyed. The results prove that the developed implant design with optimal screw pretension forces should have good biomechanical characteristics.

AbstractThe optimal design of the tools in bulk metal forming is a crucial task in the early design phase and greatly affects the final accuracy of the parts. The process of tool geometry assessment is resource- and time-consuming, as it consists of experience-based procedures. In this paper, a compensation method is developed with the aim to reduce geometrical deviations in hot forged parts. In order to simplify the transition process between the discrete finite-element (FE) mesh and the computer-aided-design (CAD) geometry, a strategy featuring an equivalent surrogate model is proposed. The deviations are evaluated on a reduced set of reference points on the nominal geometry and transferred to the FE nodes. The compensation approach represents a modification of the displacement-compatible spring-forward method (DC-SF), which consists of two elastic FE analyses. The compatible stress originating the deviations is estimated and subsequently applied to the original nominal geometry. After stress relaxation, an updated nominal geometry of the part is obtained, whose surfaces represent the compensated tools. The compensation method is verified by means of finite element simulations and the robustness of the algorithm is demonstrated with an additional test geometry. Finally, the compensation strategy is validated experimentally.

Abstract A finite element analysis model was developed to predict flexural behavior of thick composites with uniform, graded and localized fiber waviness. In the analyses, material and geometrical nonlinearties due to fiber waviness were incorporated into the model utilizing energy density and an incremental method. In the model, two kinds of geometrical nonlinearity were considered, one due to reorientation of fibers and the other due to difference of curvatures from one finite element to another during deformation. The finite element analyses utilize the iterative mapping method to incorporate these geometrical nonlinear factors. The model was used to predict not only the flexural behavior of a flat thick composite plate but also of a thick composite plate with initial curvature. Flat composite specimens with various degrees of fiber waviness were fabricated and four-point flexural tests were conducted. The predicted nonlinear behavior by the current model was compared with results from the thin slice model [7] and experiments. Good agreement was observed among them.

Abstract For a Computer Aided Design of a concrete truck mixer, a six cubic meter concrete mixer drum is analyzed using the finite element method. The complex mixer drum structure is subjected to pressure loading resulting from the plain concrete inside the drum, in addition to its own weight. The effect of deceleration of the vehicle and the rotational motion of the drum on the reactions and stresses are also considered. Equivalent static loads are used to represent the dynamic loading effects. Three-dimensional shell elements are used to model the drum, and frame elements are used to represent a ring stiffener around the shell. Membrane forces and bending stresses are obtained for different loading conditions. Results are also compared with approximate analysis. The CAD procedure directly used the available drafting and the results were used effectively in the design of the concrete mixer drum.

Background: Once inserted and osseointegrated, dental implants become ankylosed, which makes them immobile with respect to the alveolar bone. The present paper describes the development of a new and original implant design which replicates the 3D physiological mobility of natural teeth. The first phase of the test followed the resistance of the implant to mechanical stress as well as the behavior of the surrounding bone. Modifications to the design were made after the first set of results. In the second stage, mechanical tests in conjunction with finite element analysis were performed to test the improved implant design. Methods: In order to test the new concept, 6 titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V) implants were produced (milling). The implants were fitted into the dynamic testing device. The initial mobility was measured for each implant as well as their mobility after several test cycles. In the second stage, 10 implants with the modified design were produced. The testing protocol included mechanical testing and finite element analysis. Results: The initial testing protocol was applied almost entirely successfully. Premature fracturing of some implants and fitting blocks occurred and the testing protocol was readjusted. The issues in the initial test helped design the final testing protocol and the new implants with improved mechanical performance. Conclusion: The new prototype proved the efficiency of the concept. The initial tests pointed out the need for design improvement and the following tests validated the concept.

Steering knuckle connects steering system, suspension system and braking system to the chassis. The steering knuckle contributes a significant weight to the total weight of a vehicle. Increasing the efficiency of an automobile without compromising the performances is the major challenge faced by the manufacturers. This paper presents an effective topology optimization of steering knuckle used in a vehicle with the primary objective of minimizing weight. The study on optimization of knuckle is divided into two phases, the first phase involves making of a computer-aided design model of the original steering knuckle and carry out finite element analysis on the knuckle by estimating the loads, which are acting on the component. In the second phase, design optimization of the model of steering knuckle is carried out, and excess material is removed at the region where induced stress is negligible as obtained in finite element analysis assuming standard boundary and loading conditions. The paper describes a research work carried out to optimize structural topology giving the essential details. The methodology may be applied to optimize structural components used in applications where the ratio of desired properties to the cost, generally in terms of weight, is to be optimized. In the case of automobiles, strength to weight ratio has to be maximized. New researchers working in the area will have an understanding of the procedures, and further, the techniques may be applied to design in general.

It is well recognized that 3D finite element analysis is inappropriate for analyzing thin structures such as plates and shells. Instead, a variety of highly efficient and specialized 2D methods have been developed for analyzing such structures. However, 2D methods pose serious automation challenges in today’s 3D design environment. Specifically, analysts must manually extract cross-sectional properties from a 3D computer aided design (CAD) model and import them into a 2D environment for analysis. In this paper, we propose two efficient yet easily automatable dual representation methods for analyzing thin plates. The first method exploits standard off-the-shelf 3D finite element packages and achieves high computational efficiency through an algebraic reduction process. In the reduction process, a 3D plate bending stiffness matrix is constructed from a 3D mesh and then projected onto a lower-dimensional space by appealing to standard 2D plate theories. In the second method, the analysis is carried out by integrating 2D shape functions over the boundary of the 3D plate. Both methods do not entail extraction of the cross-sectional properties of the plate. However, the user must identify the plate or thickness direction. The proposed methodologies are substantiated through numerical experiments.
