This paper presents a generalized targeting model that subsumes most known targeting problems. In this paper, a recurrent state is defined as a condition that requires reprocessing or rework. The generalized model can accommodate one or two specifications limits and can be used for the following quality characteristics: The nominal-the-better, the larger-the-better, and the smaller-the-better. This model can be used to find the optimal mean of a quality characteristic, as well as the optimal specification limits. In addition, the paper studies the conditions under which the solution to the proposed model can provide a global solution. The paper shows that, for some of the special cases and under very general conditions, the optimal lower limit should be zero and the optimal upper limit should be infinity. This paper proves that the expected profits improve for the case where only a lower limit on the quality characteristic is used, if a recurrent state is included by adding an optimized upper limit. A special case of the model is used to study the problem of determining a common mean for multiple products, as well as the optimal upper specification limits for each product. A solution procedure for maximizing the expected profits and obtaining the optimal solution is introduced. A numerical example is presented.

Abstract An integrated multistage supply chain inventory model containing a single manufacturer and multiple retailers is proposed to consider deteriorating materials and finished products with imperfect production and inspection systems. The main purpose is to jointly determine the manufacturer’s production and delivery strategies and the retailers’ replenishment strategies to maximize the integrated total profit. First, the individual total profit functions of the manufacturer and multiple retailers are established and are integrated to form the total profit function of the supply chain system. Then, to address the model complexity, an algorithm is proposed to obtain the optimal solution. Several practical numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the solution procedure, and a sensitivity analysis is performed on the major parameters. From the numerical results, several findings that differ from those in the previous literature were observed. First, retailers with larger market scale, better cost control, and inspection capabilities guarantee higher integrated total profit. Second, increasing the deterioration rates of materials and finished products affect the order quantity of materials in various ways. Third, the manufacturer’s shipping strategy is rigid and not easily adjusted in the proposed model. The performance of the proposed model has several meaningful management implications.

PurposeThis paper proposes a new inventory model with inspection policy because in practice the received orders may contain non- conforming (NC) items. So, a buyer who receive an order from a supplier should use an inspection policy.Design/methodology/approachThe inspection policy is assumed to be zero-defect single sampling. Under this policy a lot is accepted only if no defect has been identified in the inspected sample. The fraction of NC is assumed to be a random variable following a Binomial distribution and the number of NC items detected by inspection assumed to be a random variable, which follows a hypergeometric distribution. Order quantity and sample size are the two decision variables. A solution procedure is presented for the proposed model. The proposed procedure presents the optimal solution.FindingsNumerical examples presented to illustrate the procedure outlined for the proposed model and its applicability. The results of numerical examples and comparing them with traditional EOQ model reveal that by the proposed model, the buyer could reduce total cost that shows the efficiency and validity of the proposed model.Originality/valueThe novelty of this paper is the new proposed model that considers inspection policy in inventory management. The proposed model determines sample size as well as order quantity to consider both subject of inventory management and quality control, simultaneously.

Devising adaptive logics usually starts with a set of abnormalities and a deductive logic. Where the adaptive logic is ampliative, the deductive logic is the lower limit logic, the rules of which are unconditionally valid. Where the adaptive logic is corrective, the deductive logic is the upper limit logic, the rules of which are valid in case the premises do not require any abnormalities to be true. In some cases, the idea for devising an adaptive logic does not relate to a set of abnormalities, but to one or more defeasible rules, and perhaps also to one of the deductive logics. Defeasible rules are not universally valid, but are valid in ‘normal situations’ or for unproblematic parts of premise set. Where the idea is such, the set of abnormalities has to be delineated in view of the rules. The way in which this task may be tackled is by no means obvious and is the main topic studied in the present paper. The outcome is an extremely simple and transparent recipe. It is shown that, except for very special cases, the recipe leads to an adequate result.

Personal financial decision making plays an important role in modern finance. Decision problems about consumption and insurance are in this article modelled in a continuous-time multi-state Markovian framework. The optimal solution is derived and studied. The model, the problem, and its solution are exemplified by two special cases: In one model the individual takes optimal positions against the risk of dying; in another model the individual takes optimal positions against the risk of losing income as a consequence of disability or unemployment.

Background: The working state of electronic accelerator pedal directly affects the safety of vehicles and drivers. Effective fault detection and judgment for the working state of the accelerator pedal can prevent accidents. Methods: Aiming at different working conditions of electronic accelerator pedal, this paper used PNN and BP diagnosis model to detect the state of electronic accelerator pedal according to the principle and characteristics of PNN and BP neural network. The fault diagnosis test experiment of electronic accelerator pedal was carried out to get the data acquisition. Results: After the patents for electronic accelerator pedals are queried and used, the first measured voltage, the upper limit of first voltage, the first voltage lower limit, the second measured voltage, the upper limit of second voltage and the second voltage lower limit are tested to build up the data samples. Then the PNN and BP fault diagnosis models of electronic accelerator pedal are established. Six fault samples are defined through the design of electronic accelerator pedal fault classifier and the fault diagnosis processes are executed to test. Conclusion: The fault diagnosis results were analyzed and the comparisons between the PNN and the BP research results show that BP neural network is an effective method for fault detection of electronic throttle pedal, which is obviously superior to PNN neural network based on the experiment data.

Green energy has become a media issue due to climate changes, and consequently, the population has become more aware of pollution. Wind farms are an essential energy production alternative to fossil energy. The incentive to produce wind energy was a government policy some decades ago to decrease carbon emissions. In recent decades, wind farms were formed by a substation and a couple of turbines. Nowadays, wind farms are designed with hundreds of turbines requiring more than one substation. This paper formulates an integer linear programming model to design wind farms’ cable layout with several turbines. The proposed model obtains the optimal solution considering different cable types, infrastructure costs, and energy losses. An additional constraint was considered to limit the number of cables that cross a walkway, i.e., the number of connections between a set of wind turbines and the remaining wind farm. Furthermore, considering a discrete set of possible turbine locations, the model allows identifying those that should be present in the optimal solution, thereby addressing the optimal location of the substation(s) in the wind farm. The paper illustrates solutions and the associated costs of two wind farms, with up to 102 turbines and three substations in the optimal solution, selected among sixteen possible places. The optimal solutions are obtained in a short time.

This paper aims to design a supply chain network for producing double glazed glass from the recycling of waste glass. All three pillars of sustainability are taken into consideration. The economic objective tries to maximize total profits. The environmental objective considers the energy consumption, the generated waste, the greenhouse gas emission, the water consumption, and the fuel consumption of vehicles. The social objective addresses created job opportunities, the worker safety, the regional development, the worker benefit, and training hours. To solve the model, a two-stage framework based on the group best-worst method and an interactive fuzzy programming approach is developed. The proposed model is validated through a real case study based on waste glass management in the city of Shiraz. It is revealed that when sustainable development goals are approached, a great degree of improvement will be attained in environmental and social aspects without a significant decrease in the economic sustainability. The results also demonstrate that the locations of glass recycling centres are different under economic, environmental, and social pillars, and the proposed model yields an optimal system configuration with a proper satisfaction degree of all objectives. Moreover, applying the proposed solution procedure enables system designers to obtain the most desirable trade-off between different aspects of sustainability.

AbstractThe dependence of the creation and the annealing of metastable dangling bonds in hydrogenated amorphous silicon on various material parameters will be discussed in the context of a recently proposed model. After a brief review of the kinetic behaviour governing defect creation and annealing in undoped a- Si:H, a number of special cases will be analyzed: the influence of alloying with O, N, C, and Ge, changes introduced by doping and compensation, and the role of mechanical stress. Finally, possibilities to increase the stability of a-Si:H based devices will be examined.

The excavation of eighteen round barrows was undertaken by the late Charles Green during summer seasons from 1958 to 1960, in advance of their destruction by ploughing. The excavated barrows are members of two linear groups which occupy adjacent spurs to the east of the village of Shrewton in the modern parish of that name (fig. 1). One of the barrows investigated lies in Winterbourne Stoke parish. This western part of Salisbury Plain is termed the ‘Lower Plain’ comprising those areas having their ‘upper limit… between 400 and 450 feet OD and their lower limit where they overlook the valley trenches … between 250 and 300 feet O.D.’ (Gifford 1957, 6). In such a lower valley lie the modern villages of Shrewton and Rollestone, and through it flows the river Till, the nearest modern open water supply to the barrows. This connects the area to the River Avon via the Wylye and Nadder.

Acoustic Black Hole (ABH) plate structure has shown promising potentials of vibration suppression above a cut on frequency. For energy dissipation below the cut on frequency, however, the ABH is less effective due to the absence of wave focusing effect. This work reports a simultaneous optimization of ABH plates for broadband energy dissipation. Two sets of design variables of ABH plates, that is, geometry of the profile and topology of the damping layer, are optimized in an alternatively nested procedure. A novel objective function, namely the upper limit of kinetic energy, is proposed. Modeling of ABH structures is implemented and dynamic characteristic is solved using finite element method. A rectangular plate embedded with two ABH indentations is presented as a numerical example. Influence of frequency ranges in the calculation and mass ratios of the damping layer on results are discussed. The achieved optimal arrangement of the damping layer is found to cover equally, if not more, above the non-ABH (uniform) part of the plate than the ABH area. This is inconsistent with the conventional believe that damping layers should cover as much of the ABH area as possible. Mechanism of the broadband energy dissipation by the optimal solution is demonstrated.
