The study of the exact physical mechanism of cavity nucleation and growth is significant in terms of predicting the extent of internal damage following superplastic deformation. The 5A70 alloy was processed by cold rolling for 14 passes with a total reduction deformation of 90% (20–2 mm) and the heat treatment was inserted at a thickness of 10 and 5 mm at 340 °C for 30 min. The superplastic tensile tests were performed at 400, 450, 500, 550 °C and the initial strain rate was 1 10−3 s−1. Cavities were observed at the head of the particle and the interface of the grain boundaries. It is suggested that the cavity was nucleated during the sliding/climbing of the dislocations, due to the precipitate pinning effect and the impeding grain boundary during grain boundary sliding (GBS). In this study, the results demonstrated a clear transition from diffusion growth to superplastic diffusion growth and plastic-controlled growth at a cavity radius larger than 1.52 and 13.90 μm. The cavity nucleation, growth, interlinkage and coalescence under the applied stress during the superplastic deformation, as well as the crack formation and expansion during the deformation, ultimately led to the superplastic fracture.

ABSTRACTCavity nucleation during superplastic deformation of a high strength aluminium alloy has been studied using a high voltage electron microscope and an optical microscope. The results show that cavities nucleation is due only to superplastic deformation and not to pre-existing microvoids which may be introduced during thermomechanical processing. The main reason for cavity nucleation is the high stress concentration at discontinuties in the plane of the grain boundary due to grain boundary sliding.

Texture change during superplastic deformation was examined and compared in two magnesium alloys with different chemical composition. These alloys were extruded to refine the microstructure. The pre-existing basal texture of both alloys became slightly more random within the bulk probably owing to grain boundary sliding and the accompanying grain rotation. However, the texture changes differed between tensile and compressive deformation along the extrusion (longitudinal) direction. This fact suggests that dislocation slip is important in superplastic deformation. It was concluded that dislocation slip acts primarily as an accommodation mechanism for grain boundary sliding.

In this study, the high-temperature ductility of a fine-grained, polycrystalline 5083 solid solution alloy was investigated. The composition of the alloy in mass% was Al–4.5 Mg–0.68 Mn–0.19 Fe–0.13 Si–0.11 Cr. Grain refinement was effectively achieved in the stir zone by a friction stir process, and the grain size could be reduced to 3.7 μm. Tensile tests were performed at temperatures ranging from 643 to 743 K and strain rates ranging from 0.001 to 0.1 /s. The stress–strain curves showed that the flow stress continuously decreased until it reached a maximum value of stress and fractured after the initial strain hardening occurred. The value of elongation-to-failure was more than 100% when temperatures were greater than 693 K. The high ductility observed at this point can be referred to as superplastic-like elongation. This phenomenon has been reported in some Al–Mg alloys. The experimentally determined stress exponent (n value) and activation energy for deformation were about 2.5 and 123 kJ/mol, respectively. These results suggest that the grain boundary sliding, accompanied by solute drag motion of dislocations, was a rate controlling process for deformation.

The deformation behavior and microstructural evolution of fine-grained 2050 alloys at elevated temperatures and slow strain rates were investigated. The results showed that significant dynamic anisotropic grain growth occurred at the primary stage of deformation. Insignificant dislocation activity, particle-free zones, and the complete progress of grain neighbor switching based on diffusion creep were observed during superplastic deformation. Quantitative calculation showed that diffusion creep was the dominant mechanism in the superplastic deformation process, and that grain boundary sliding was involved as a coordination mechanism. Surface studies indicated that the diffusional transport of materials was accomplished mostly through the grain boundary, and that the effect of the bulk diffusion was not significant.

In this study, superplastic tensile tests were carried out for Ti-6Al-4V alloy using different initial grain sizes (2.6 μm, 6.5μm and 16.2 μm) at a temperature of 920°C with an initial strain rate of 1×10-3 s-1. To get an insight into the effect of grain size on the superplastic deformation mechanisms, the microstructures of deformed alloy were investigated by using an optical microscope and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The results indicate that there is dramatic difference in the superplastic deformation mode of fine and coarse grained Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Meanwhile, grain growth induced by superplastic deformation has also been clearly observed during deformation process, and the grain growth model including the static and strain induced part during superplastic deformation was utilized to analyze the data of Ti-6Al-4V alloy.

Superplastic deformation (SPD) behaviors of two fine-grained materials produced by ECAE and hot rolling methods have been contrastively studied in this paper. It is found that the optimum superplastic condition in as-ECAEed material was at 350°C and 1.7×10-3s-1 with elongation to failure about 800%; while in as-rolled material, the largest elongation to failure about 1000% was obtained at 480°C and 5.02×10-4s-1. Microstructure observation showed that grain evolution and cavitation behavior were different in these two materials during superplastic deformation. The controlled mechanisms for superplasticity, i.e. grain boundary sliding (GBS), dislocation creep and diffusional creep, at different deformation conditions were discussed in terms of strain rate sensitivity coefficient, stress exponent and activity energy.
