The novel members of the 1,2-diboraoxazoles family have been obtained. In the present work, we have carried out the intramolecular ring-closure reaction of borylated iminols of general type [B10H9N=C(OH)R]− (R = Me, Et, nPr, iPr, tBu, Ph, 4-Cl-Ph). This process is conducted in mild conditions with 83–87% yields. The solid-state structures of two salts of 1,2-diboraoxazoles were additionally investigated by X-ray crystallography. In addition, the phenomena of bonding interactions in the 1,2-diboraoxazole cycles have been theoretically studied by the Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules analysis. Several local and integral topological properties of the electron density involved in these interactions have been computed.

Carboncones, a special family of all-carbon allotropes, are predicted to have unique properties that distinguish them from fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, and graphenes. Owing to the absence of methods to synthesize atomically well-defined carboncones, however, experimental insight into the nature of pure carboncones has been inaccessible. Herein, we describe a facile synthesis of an atomically well-defined carboncone[1,2] (C70H20) and its soluble penta-mesityl derivative. Identified by x-ray crystallography, the carbon skeleton is a carboncone with the largest possible apex angle. Much of the structural strain is overcome in the final step of converting the bowl-shaped precursor into the rigid carboncone under mild reaction conditions. This work provides a research opportunity for investigations of atomically precise single-layered carboncones having even higher cone walls and/or smaller apex angles.

The reaction of dimethylcadmium with alcohols R-OH in equimolar ratio leads to the formation of tetrameric methylcadmium alkoxides with molecular formula [(MeCd)4 (OR)4] [R = Me (1), Et (2) and iPr (3)]. These compounds have been characterised by 1H, 13C NMR and IR spectroscopy, by mass spectrometry, elemental analyses and by X-ray crystallography (for 2 and 3). The solid state structures show distorted cubane-type aggregates with Cd4O4 cores. The structural aspects and the spectroscopic characterisations of these compounds are discussed.

An efficient synthetic approach for the preparation of densely substituted furans starting from ( E)-ethyl 3-aryl-2-cyanoacrylates and ethyl glycinate hydrochloride mediated by 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene in the presence of water is investigated. The reactions are carried out under mild conditions in N,N-dimethylformamide at 95 °C. The products are cleanly obtained in 50%–57% yields, resulting in an appealing alternative for accessing polysubstituted furan-2,4-dicarboxylates. The structure of a typical product, diethyl 5-amino-3-( p-tolyl)furan-2,4-dicarboxylate, is confirmed by X-ray crystallography.

One-dimensional (1D) polynuclear Cu(II) complex (1) derived from (5-bromo-2-hydroxybenzylidene)-2-hydroxybenzohydrazide (H2L) is synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, ESI-MS, and single crystal X-ray crystallography. Its catalytic performance towards the solvent-free microwave-assisted peroxidative oxidation of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons under mild conditions is compared with that of dinuclear Cu(II) complexes (2 and 3) of the same ligand, previously reported as antiproliferative agents. Polymer 1 exhibits the highest activity, either for the oxidation of cyclohexane (leading to overall yields, based on the alkane, of up to 39% of cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone) or towards the oxidation of toluene (selectively affording benzaldehyde up to a 44% yield), after 2 or 2.5 h of irradiation at 80 or 50 °C, respectively.

The hexacarbonyl compounds of chromium, molybdenum and tungsten react with the highly nucleophilic agent Li NiPr2 and in a subsequent alkylation with (Et3O)BF4 to give the carbene complexes (CO)5M[C(N′Pr2)OEt] (1, 3, 4). In case of W(CO)6 and Mo(CO)6 the novel biscarbene complexes cis(CO)4M[C(NiPr2)OEt]2 (2, 5) are additionally obtained. Reaction conditions, properties and spectroscopic data of the new compounds are reported. The molecular structure of cis(CO)4W[C(NiPr2)OEt]2 (4) was determined by X-ray crystallography

The reactions of a series of arene diazonium salts with 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane (cyclam) afford the novel compounds, the 1,4,8,11-tetra[2-aryl-1-diazenyl]-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecanes (1a–1f), which are the first examples of tetrakistriazenes to be reported. The tetrakistriazenes were characterized by IR spectroscopy, proton and carbon NMR, elemental analysis, high resolution electrospray mass spectrometry, and X-ray crystallography. The analogous reaction of a diazonium salt with 1,4,7-triazacyclononane or 1,5,9-triazacyclododecane yields the tristriazenes 2, 3a, and 3b. The structures of compounds 1c and 1e were solved by X-ray crystallography at low temperature (150 K). Both molecules display a conformation where the four phenyltriazenyl groups point alternately upwards and downwards with respect to the mean macrocyclic plane.Key words: triazene, tetrakistriazene, cyclam, tetraazacyclotetradecane, X-ray, NMR, cyclic polyamines.

Numerous enzymes, such as the pyridoxal 5′-phosphate (PLP)-dependent enzymes, require cofactors for their activities. Using X-ray crystallography, structural snapshots of the L-serine dehydratase catalytic reaction of a bacterial PLP-dependent enzyme were determined. In the structures, the dihedral angle between the pyridine ring and the Schiff-base linkage of PLP varied from 18° to 52°. It is proposed that the organic cofactor PLP directly catalyzes reactions by active conformational changes, and the novel catalytic mechanism involving the PLP cofactor was confirmed by high-level quantum-mechanical calculations. The conformational change was essential for nucleophilic attack of the substrate on PLP, for concerted proton transfer from the substrate to the protein and for directing carbanion formation of the substrate. Over the whole catalytic cycle, the organic cofactor catalyzes a series of reactions, like the enzyme. The conformational change of the PLP cofactor in catalysis serves as a starting point for identifying the previously unknown catalytic roles of organic cofactors.

A simple, cost-effective method under environmentally benign conditions is a very important concept for the preparation of 2,3-dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-one derivatives. The present work describes an efficient and eco-friendly protocol for the synthesis of 2-amino-N-(2-substituted-ethyl)benzamide and 3-substituted-2,3-dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-one derivatives. The novel feature of this protocol is the use of 2-methyl tetrahydrofuran (2-MeTHF) as an eco-friendly alternative solvent to tetrahydrofuran (THF) in the first step. In the second step, methanol in the presence of potassium carbonate as a catalyst was used under conventional heating or microwave irradiation, which provided an eco-friendly method to afford the target products in excellent yields and purities. NMR (1H and 13C), elemental analysis, and LC-MS confirmed the structures of all compounds. X-ray crystallography further confirmed the structure of the intermediate 2-amino-N-(2-substituted-ethyl)benzamide 3a. The molecular structure of 3a was monoclinic crystal, with P21/c, a = 13.6879 (11) Å, b = 10.2118 (9) Å, c = 9.7884 (9) Å, β = 105.068 (7)°, V = 1321.2 (2) Å3, and Z = 4.

Two new substituted thiobenzoic acids, m-nitrothiobenzoic and m-sulfothiobenzoic acid, and six (four new) homo- and heteroleptic bismuth(iii) compounds derived from thiobenzoic acid and substituted thiobenzoic acid have been synthesised and fully characterised using both solvent free and solvent mediated methods; Bi(SC(=O)C6H5)3 (3), PhBi(SC(=O)C6H5)2 (4), Ph2Bi(SC(=O)C6H5) (5), Bi(SC(=O)C6H4-m-NO2)3 (6), PhBi(SC(=O)C6H4-m-NO2)2 (7), and PhBi(SC(=O)C6H4-m-SO3) (8). The solid-state structures of the previously reported Bi(SC(=O)C6H5)3 (3) and PhBi(SC(=O)]C6H5)2 (4) complexes have now been confirmed by X-ray crystallography. In the solid-state complex 3 forms a column-like polymeric structure resembling stacked bowls through pyramidal intermolecular Bi–S3 bonds of distance 3.359 Å, providing a Bi(iii) centre with a nine coordinate environment. Complex 4 forms discrete tetrameric units cemented by long intermolecular Bi–S (3.774 Å), Bi–O(= C) (3.030, 3.071 Å) and Bi–C bonds (3.627 Å). The complexes were assessed for their activity against three strains of Helicobacter pylori and all show a minimum inhibitory concentration of 6.25 µg mL–1, indicating that the high level of bactericidal activity is insensitive to the degree of substitution at the Bi(iii) centre.
