Countries around the world have paid increasing attention to the issue of marine security, and sea target detection is a key task to ensure marine safety. Therefore, it is of great significance to propose an efficient and accurate sea-surface target detection algorithm. The anchor-setting method of the traditional YOLO v3 only uses the degree of overlap between the anchor and the ground-truth box as the standard. As a result, the information of some feature maps cannot be used, and the required accuracy of target detection is hard to achieve in a complex sea environment. Therefore, two new anchor-setting methods for the visual detection of sea targets were proposed in this paper: the average method and the select-all method. In addition, cross PANet, a feature fusion structure for cross-feature maps was developed and was used to obtain a better baseline cross YOLO v3, where different anchor-setting methods were combined with a focal loss for experimental comparison in the datasets of sea buoys and existing sea ships, SeaBuoys and SeaShips, respectively. The results showed that the method proposed in this paper could significantly improve the accuracy of YOLO v3 in detecting sea-surface targets, and the highest value of mAP in the two datasets is 98.37% and 90.58%, respectively.

Target detection on the sea-surface has always been a high-profile problem, and the detection of weak targets is one of the most difficult problems and the key issue under this problem. Traditional techniques, such as imaging, cannot effectively detect these types of targets, so researchers choose to start by mining the characteristics of the received echoes and other aspects for target detection. This paper proposes a false alarm rate (FAR) controllable deep forest model based on six-dimensional feature space for efficient and accurate detection of weak targets on the sea-surface. This is the first attempt at the deep forest model in this field. The validity of the model was verified on IPIX data, and the detection probability was compared with other proposed methods. Under the same FAR condition, the average detection accuracy rate of the proposed method could reach over 99.19%, which is 9.96% better than the results of the current most advanced method (K-NN FAR-controlled Detector). Experimental results show that multi-feature fusion and the use of a suitable detection framework have a positive effect on the detection of weak targets on the sea-surface.

Invasive species pose one of the greatest threats to global biodiversity. Early detection of invasive species is critical in order to prevent or manage their spread before they exceed the ability of land management groups to control them. Optical remote sensing has been established as a useful technology for the early detection and mapping of invasive vegetation populations. Through the use of airborne hyperspectral imagery (HSI), this study establishes a target detection methodology used to identify and map the invasive reed Phragmites australis subsp. australis within the entire extent of Îles-de-Boucherville National Park (Quebec, ON, Canada). We applied the Spectral Angle Mapper (SAM) target detection algorithm trained with a high accuracy GNSS ground truth data set to produce a park-wide map illustrating the extent of detected Phragmites. The total coverage of detected Phragmites was 26.74 ha (0.267 km2), which represents 3.28% of the total park area of 814 ha (8.14 km2). The inherent spatial uncertainty of the airborne HSI (∼2.25 m) was accounted for with uncertainty buffers, which, when included in the measurement of detected Phragmites, lead to a total area of 59.17 ha (0.591 km2), or 7.26% of the park. The overall accuracy of the Phragmites map was 84.28%, with a sensitivity of 76.32% and a specificity of 91.57%. Additionally, visual interpretation of the validation ground truth dataset was performed by 10 individuals, in order to compare their performance to that of the target detection algorithm. The overall accuracy of the visual interpretation was lower than the target detection (i.e., 69.18%, with a sensitivity of 59.21% and a specificity of 78.31%). Overall, this study is one of the first to utilize airborne HSI and target detection to map the extent of Phragmites over a moderately large extent. The uses and limitations of such an approach are established, and the methodology described here in detail could be adapted for future remote sensing studies of Phragmites or other vegetation species, native or invasive, at study sites around the world.

Target detection is one of the most important research directions in computer vision. Recently, a variety of target detection algorithms have been proposed. Since the targets have varying sizes in a scene, it is essential to be able to detect the targets at different scales. To improve the detection performance of targets with different sizes, a multi-scale target detection algorithm was proposed involving improved YOLO (You Only Look Once) V3. The main contributions of our work include: (1) a mathematical derivation method based on Intersection over Union (IOU) was proposed to select the number and the aspect ratio dimensions of the candidate anchor boxes for each scale of the improved YOLO V3; (2) To further improve the detection performance of the network, the detection scales of YOLO V3 have been extended from 3 to 4 and the feature fusion target detection layer downsampled by 4× is established to detect the small targets; (3) To avoid gradient fading and enhance the reuse of the features, the six convolutional layers in front of the output detection layer are transformed into two residual units. The experimental results upon PASCAL VOC dataset and KITTI dataset show that the proposed method has obtained better performance than other state-of-the-art target detection algorithms.

Without ground-truth data, trajectory anomaly detection is a hard work and the result lacks of interpretability. Moreover, in most current methods, trajectories are represented by geometric features or their low-dimensional linear combination, and some hidden features and high-dimensional combined features cannot be found efficiently. Meanwhile, traditional methods still cannot get rid of the limitation of space attributes. Therefore, a novel trajectory anomaly detection algorithm is present in this article. Unsupervised learning mechanism is used to overcome nonground-truth problem and deep representation method is used to represent trajectories in a comprehensive way. First, each trajectory is partitioned into segments according to its open angles, then the shallow features at each point of a segment are extracted and. In this way, each segment is represented as a feature sequence. Second, shallow features are integrated into auto-encoder-based deep feature fusion model, and the fusion feature sequences can be extracted. Third, these fused feature sequences are grouped into different clusters using a unsupervised clustering algorithm, and then segments which quite differ from others are detected as anomalies. Finally, comprehensive experiments are conducted on both synthetic and real data sets, which demonstrate the efficiency of our work.

Unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) have been extensively used in various dangerous maritime tasks. Vision-based sea surface object detection algorithms can improve the environment perception abilities of USVs. In recent years, the object detection algorithms based on neural networks have greatly enhanced the accuracy and speed of object detection. However, the balance between speed and accuracy is a difficulty in the application of object detection algorithms for USVs. Most of the existing object detection algorithms have limited performance when they are applied in the object detection technology for USVs. Therefore, a sea surface object detection algorithm based on You Only Look Once v4 (YOLO v4) was proposed. Reverse Depthwise Separable Convolution (RDSC) was developed and applied to the backbone network and feature fusion network of YOLO v4. The number of weights of the improved YOLO v4 is reduced by more than 40% compared with the original number. A large number of ablation experiments were conducted on the improved YOLO v4 in the sea ship dataset SeaShips and a buoy dataset SeaBuoys. The experimental results showed that the detection speed of the improved YOLO v4 increased by more than 20%, and mAP increased by 1.78% and 0.95%, respectively, in the two datasets. The improved YOLO v4 effectively improved the speed and accuracy in the sea surface object detection task. The improved YOLO v4 algorithm fused with RDSC has a smaller network size and better real-time performance. It can be easily applied in the hardware platforms with weak computing power and has shown great application potential in the sea surface object detection.

In the coal mining process, various types of tramp materials will be mixed into the raw coal, which will affect the quality of the coal and endanger the normal operation of the equipment. Automatic detection of tramp materials objects is an important process and basis for efficient coal sorting. However, previous research has focused on the detection of gangue, ignoring the detection of other types of tramp materials, especially small targets. Because the initial Single Shot MultiBox Detector (SSD) lacks the efficient use of feature maps, it is difficult to obtain stable results when detecting tramp materials objects. In this article, an object detection algorithm based on feature fusion and dense convolutional network is proposed, which is called tramp materials in raw coal single-shot detector (TMRC-SSD), to detect five types of tramp materials such as gangue, bolt, stick, iron sheet, and iron chain. In this algorithm, a modified DenseNet is first designed and a four-stage feature extractor is used to down-sample the feature map stably. After that, we use the dilation convolution and multi-branch structure to enrich the receptive field. Finally, in the feature fusion module, we designed cross-layer feature fusion and attention fusion modules to realize the semantic interaction of feature maps. The experiments show that the module we designed is effective. This method is better than the existing model. When the input image is 300 × 300 pixels, it can reach 96.12% MAP and 24FPS. Especially in the detection of small objects, the detection accuracy has increased by 4.1 to 95.57%. The experimental results show that this method can be applied to the actual detection of tramp materials objects in raw coal.

In order to solve the problem of small and dim ship target detection under complex sea-sky background, we propose a target detection algorithm based on sea-sky line detection. Firstly, the paper locates the sea-sky-line based on fully convolutional networks, through which target potential area can be determined and disturbance can be excluded. Then the method based on the mean of four detection gradient is adopted to detect the small and dim ship target. The simulation results show that the method of sea-sky-line detection based on fully convolutional networks can overcome the disadvantages of the traditional methods and is suitable for complex background. The detection method proposed can filter the white noise point on the sea surface and thus can reduce false alarm, through which the detection of small and dim ship can be completed well.
