This article presents the results of an exploratory study on the relationships between the emotional competencies and attitudes towards creativity in a sample of primary school students. This study is part of a wider project on the implementation of the curricular area “Emotional Education and Creativity,” a far-reaching innovation in the educational system of the Canary Islands, Spain. A validated questionnaire for the evaluation of emotional and creative variables from the teachers’ perspectives was used. The questionnaire was given to 230 primary school teachers, who used it to assess the emotional and creative competencies of 2540 schoolchildren. A bivariate correlation was carried out to establish the relationship between these competencies, and a multiple regression analysis was used to understand the influence of emotional skills on creativity. The results obtained confirmed the close relationship between the emotional dimension and the creative construct. Specifically, it was observed that emotional awareness was the competence with the closest relationship, together with the responsibility for one’s own emotions, and the one that had the greatest weight in explaining creative competences. This result emphasizes that emotional and creative competencies complement each other and highlights the importance of working on these competencies together. We are committed to continuing with this line of research that supports an emotional conception of creativity.

Background: At present, obesity is considered a chronic disease which must be treated like any other medical condition, and if not treated it leads, insidiously, to the development of numerous diseases. It has an epidemic-like nature and is not only one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality, Adolescence represents a sensitive period in the development of obesity, and obesity in adolescence is known to track into adulthood and be associated with several health problems. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of overweight and obesity and explore the association among the following variables: nutritional habits, physical activity, videogames, and the student perception towards obesity.Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among primary school students in Tabuk city, Saudi Arabia. Study population: 6th year primary school in private and public school in Tabuk city, sample size 200 school students in private and governmental schools involving male and female equally, firstly two schools for each gender were selected randomly and the whole classes of the selected schools were taken, data was collected through a self- administered validated questionnaire. Height and weight of each selected student were measured and BMI was calculated. We used WHO growth charts and definition - that based on widely different ethnic backgrounds and cultural settings.Results: 200 self-administered questionnaires were distributed to the students and collected, giving a response rate of 100%. Their age ranged between 10 and 14 Years (Mean=11.96 years) and (SD=0.5 years). 50% were male and 50% were female, 99% were Saudi, their BMI ranged between 13 and 41.33 (Mean=23.34) and (SD=5.80 years). The prevalence of overweight among primary school students in Tabuk city, according to the CDC growth chart, was 15.5% and that of obesity was 22%. The prevalence of overweight and obesity among male students were 13% and 17% compared to 18% and 27% among female students; respectively, higher prevalence was shown with reduced physical activities and higher total media time. Also there was a significant association with some related perceptions like (considering obesity as an illness, availability of family obesity and trial of losing weight). Conclusion: Our study concluded that there is apparent increase in the prevalence of overweight and obesity in primary private and public schools in Tabuk city and evidence based data on considerable associated factors.Bangladesh Journal of Medical Science Vol.15(3) 2016 p.329-334

Numerous contributions corroborate the need to include emotional education and the development of emotional competencies at school to improve students’ school learning and well-being. The present study aims to learn more about the development of emotional competencies in primary school students, taking into account gender differences across different cycles and analyzing the potential link with students’ overall academic performance. Participants were 2389 primary school students (51.2% boys and 48.8% girls), aged from 6 to 12, from 21 public and semi-private schools in Spain. The study is a non-experimental quantitative study, using an ex-post-facto descriptive method. The Emotional Development Questionnaire (CDE 9-13), the Emotional Competencies Observation Scale, and the overall grade point average were applied to the sample. The results show significant differences in favor of girls in the development of most emotional competencies in all three educational cycles. Differences were also observed in academic performance by gender in the primary school cycle, with girls achieving higher grades. At the same time, positive correlations were found between academic performance and emotional competencies. The results confirm the importance of including emotional education in primary education.

Dance and mathematics are seemingly very distant concepts at first glance. In the theoretical parts of our study we show how strongly mathematics and spatial abilities are interrelated, including the correlation between dance and spatial abilities as well. Consequently a hypothesis derives that dance develops spatial abilities, through which it develops mathematical skills at the same time. Our research focused on first year primary school students. During the one month course we applied creative children dance and tasks of movement from drama pedagogy. Children’s abilities were measured pre- and after the course classes with a test of both mathematical and spatial skills. According to this research, we could show some improvement in mathematical skills as a result of the development, but there is no significant improvement in spatial skills. We attempted to find out about the reasons of the results we found.

The sample on the study of digital socialization included 316 primary school students aged 7 to 9. On the one hand, the results showed the preservation and demonstration of the content and methods of traditional socialization among younger students of all levels of Internet involvement in terms of digital socialization. This fact indicates the integration and combination of digital and traditional socialization. On the other hand, the increase in the levels of Internet involvement contributes to the replacement and transition from traditional socialization to a digital one.

Digital life forms part of daily reality for young people. For this reason, traditional bullying in school has been reproduced in the online environment, resulting in an overlap of off- and online bullying. Research on socio-emotional competencies and bullying is revealing interesting results among students in secondary schools. However, studies involving primary school students are much scarcer. In addition, the majority of studies have been carried out based on an understanding of socio-emotional competencies as a unidimensional construct. In the present study, we examined the overlap between off- and online bullying victimization and the influence of the factors comprising socio-emotional competencies on this overlap. Participants comprised 1130 students (49.7% were boys and 50.3% were girls) from the fifth and sixth grades at 15 schools in the autonomous communities of Madrid and Castilla-La Mancha (Spain). The results indicate a high rate of overlap between off- and online bullying victimization, without significant gender differences. Poor relationship skills in boys and low self-management in girls were associated with being a victim of both traditional bullying and cyberbullying. The conclusions point to an interesting line of intervention and prevention, establishing a framework of confluence for social and emotional variables within the primary education context.

Although visual creativity in art affects all variables of the learning and teaching process, no measurement tool has been found in the Turkish literature regarding the level of students’ visual creativity in art. In this study, a measurement tool was developed to measure visual creativity levels of primary school students in art and evidence regarding the construct validity and reliability of the scale was determined. The research was carried out with 381 primary school students in the 1st and 4th grades of primary school. 48.5% (185) of the students are female and 51.5% (196) of them are male. The scale, whose content validity was provided by expert opinions and literature review, was one-dimensional and had high construct validity based on confirmatory and exploratory factor analyzes. In addition, it was found that the Scale of Visual Creativity in Art had correlation with the perceived visual creativity scale and the scale developed had high criterion validity. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis results showed that the scale is structurally one-dimensional and had a high validity. The Cronbach Alpha reliability coefficient of the one-dimensional form of the scale is .95. In addition, results of item-total correlations of the scale were tested and discussed.
