Irish beef processors and cattle farmers have been involved in a lasting controversy on power asymmetry. This paper estimates the degree of market power in the Irish beef processing industry. The New Empirical Industrial Organization approach is extended for estimation, and the market power is testified by conjectural elasticity with supply and demand functions, indicating that beef processors exert a significant market power on cattle farms. Export-orientation and high subsidies are two outstanding features in the Irish beef industry. Exports and subsidies are shown in this paper to have an insignificant influence on market power. This paper confirms that beef processors can exercise market power on farmers to lower prices below the marginal cost.

As the milk in Lithuania produces by a lot of milk producers, who sell their product to several customers (several large dairy processors), a hypothesis appears, that Lithuanian raw milk sector is oligopsonic. In this case, the price is not determined by the product producer, but by the buyers. This situation is typical for many agricultural products in food supply chain. This study aims to determine the market power of the Lithuanian milk processing industry on the market of raw milk. An empirical analysis is based on the New Empirical Industrial Organization (NEIO) market power models. Empirical research has showed that there was an oligopsony (0.28) in the Lithuanian raw milk market.

The goal of the paper is to develop a conceptual framework that can be used to examine market competitiveness and assess cross-market effects in a multi-product oligopoly consisting of firms producing and selling various demand-related products. The econometric model which consists of two inverse demand functions and two price-margin equations is applied to the US catfish processing industry. Focusing on fresh catfish filet and whole fresh catfish, the empirical results rule out the existence of cross-market effects, but give support to the existence of some degree of market power. In that setting, the oligopoly power indices are, respectively, 18.2 percent and 13.3 percent for fresh catfish filet and whole fresh catfish thereby indicating that the price distortion is more pronounced in the market for fresh catfish filet than it is in the market for whole fresh catfish.

Background. The total production of beef and pork is declining from year to year. The study of development trends in the meat industry of Ukraine will help to outline the prospects for the successful realization of potential opportunities for production expansion. An analysis of recent research and publications has shown that despite some scientific developments, dynamic changes in the meat processing industry require constant monitoring of unresolved issues. The aim of the study is to analyze the current state and characteristics of the meat processing industry of Ukraine on the basis of analytical research in general and in the context of its innovation activities in particular. Materials and methods. Research methods were used: monographic, statistical groupings, correlation-regression analysis, graphical. Results. Analysis of the dynamics of industrial meat production shows that beef and veal occupy the least share in it. The basis for ensuring the economic balance of production and economic relations of economic entities is the consistency of supply and demand for raw meat and products of its processing. For the successful development of the industry, the state must protect and stimulate domestic producers; to harmonize domestic standards of safety and quality of products in accordance with international ones. The innovative development of the meat market requires adequate investment support, and the stimulation of investment activity should be considered in the context of the strategy of development of the national economy on an innovative basis. Conclusion. Livestock production in general and meat in particular are one of the leading sectors of agriculture. In recentyears, there have been some trends in the dynamics and structure of meat production and consumption in favor of cheaper poultry meat. The reason for this is the reduction in production; increase in retail prices for all types of products; low incomes of the majority of the population. A necessary condition for the sustainable development of the meat processing industry is the introduction of European regulations on product quality and safety standards; introduction of resource-saving technologies at enterprises; reconstruction of enterprises; provision of production facilities with domestic raw materials.

The baking industry is one of the most important parts of the Czech food processing industry. The Czech baking industry has a bigger price differential compared to other Europe Union bakers than occurs with any other industry. Therefore the Czech government has integrated plans to improve this competitive advantage. The up-to-date trends are compared with the main European bakery producers and consumers–Germany in this paper. The research is focused on the analysis of the basic factors of supply and demand in the bakery markets of both these countries.During the recent period of time there have been many researchers from the FBE MUAF in Brno, who focused on the environment in the branch, e.g. Bečvářová (2005), Černíková and Žufan (2004); Chládková and Kudová (2004), Tomšík and Chládková (2005), Syrovátka (2000), Veselská (2005). The research on trade in food is solved firstly by Presová and Tvrdoň (2005).This paper is the part of the Research proposal MSM 6215648904 being solved at the FBE MUAF in Brno.

Abstract In this chapter, we examine the importance of softwood lumber production to Canada's economy and provide a brief history of the Canada-U.S. softwood lumber dispute and its resolution on various occasions using U.S. countervailing and anti-dumping duties, export taxes or various types of quota regimes, including tariff rate quotas. The construction of excess supply and demand functions is explained, as are the gains from trade. This helps inform the modeling approaches that are identified in later chapters.
