An analogy is found between the streamline function corresponding to Stokes flows in rectangular cavities and the thermodynamics of phase transitions and critical points. In a rectangular cavity flow, with no-slip boundary conditions at the walls, the corners are fixed points. The corners defined by a stationary and a moving wall, are found to be analogous to a thermodynamic first-order transition point. In contrast, the corners defined by two stationary walls correspond to thermodynamic critical points. Here, flow structures, also known as Moffatt eddies, form and act as stagnation regions where mixing is impeded. A third stationary point occurs in the middle region of the channel and it is analogous to a high temperature thermodynamic fixed point. The numerical results of the fluid flow modeling are correlated with analytical work in the proximity of the fixed points.

Among many open questions in theoretical physics, consistent quantum gravity theory is still a major issue to be solved. Recent major works in phase transitions of black holes (BH) can be helpful for quantum interpretation of classical gravity. We study the new effective method to discuss the thermodynamic phase transitions onto well renowned regular BHs. Ordinary approaches of phase transitions depend upon equation of state and it is impossible to obtain all critical points with ordinary approaches. This study is derived from the slope of temperature versus entropy and it provides the possibility of finding all the critical points analytically. This technique provides pressure, which is different from standard relation of pressure and independent of other thermodynamical relations. We discuss some issues in ordinary methods and provide an easy approach to investigate the critical behavior of thermodynamical quantities. We find out the phase transitions points and horizon radii of non-physical range for BHs. We also use the new thermodynamical relations to briefly study well-known Joule–Thomson (JT) effect on regular BH.

The magnetic phase transitions and magnetocaloric properties of Gd5Si0.4In3.6 compound have been investigated. Magnetothermal measurements performed at different conditions reveal that the sample undergoes two magnetic phase transitions. One is a second-order transition from paramagnetic to ferromagnetic state at about 197 K, the other is a first-order transition when the temperature is reduced to 75 K. The magnetocaloric effect around Curie temperature (TC) was calculated in terms of isothermal magnetic entropy change by using Maxwells equation,which remains over a quite wide temperature span of 70 K between the temperature region from160 to 240 K, and thus makes this material attractive for magnetic refrigerator applications.

Monte Carlo simulations of thermodynamic phase transitions are usually hampered by long relaxation times due to the phenomenon of “critical slowing down.” Using a mapping due to Fortuin and Kasteleyn, a cluster approach to Monte Carlo simulations has been developed, which greatly reduces relaxation times, improving efficiency by up to two or three orders of magnitude. New developments and extensions of this approach are also discussed.

Policrystalline (bis)thiourea pyridinium bromide has been studied with dielectric spectroscopy and DSC method. New information about phase transitions in (bis)thiourea pyridinium bromide has been obtained and discussed. Two solid-solid phase transitions (at T2 = 150 K - first order transition of order-disorder type, and T1 = 180 K - second order) have been revealed. A change of the ion dynamics is observed at T2

Re-entrant magnetic phase transitions in Ce(Fe1–xMx)2 systems (where M=Al, Ru, Co, etc.) are being investigated by various research groups. It has been observed that the system goes from a paramagnetic to ferromagnetic state followed by an almost complete loss of magnetization as the temperature is lowered. We have done systematic experimental measurements of magnetization, ac susceptibility, electrical resistivity, and thermal expansion on the Ce(Fe1–xCox)2 system. It is found that as the temperature is decreased, the system goes from para- to ferro- to antiferro-magnetic phase. The ferro- to antiferro-magnetic phase transition is a first order transition. Our experimental results are consistent with the magnetic phase diagram predictions by Moriya and Usami's theory of strongly interacting itinerant electron systems.

The present article proposes a measure of correlation for multiqubit mixed states. The measure is defined recursively, accumulating the correlation of the subspaces, making it simple to calculate without the use of regression. Unlike usual measures, the proposed measure is continuous additive and reflects the dimensionality of the state space, allowing to compare states with different dimensions. Examples show that the measure can signal critical points (CPs) in the analysis of Quantum Phase Transitions (QPTs) in Heisenberg models.
