Safe interactions between humans and robots are needed in several industrial processes and service tasks. Compliance design and control of mechanisms is a way to increase safety. This article presents a compliant revolute joint mechanism using a biphasic media variable stiffness actuator. The actuator has a member configured to transmit motion that is connected to a fluidic circuit, into which a biphasic control fluid circulates. Stiffness is controlled by changing pressure of control fluid into distribution lines. A mathematical model of the actuator is presented, a model-based control method is implemented to track the desired position and stiffness, and equations relating to the dynamics of the mechanism are provided. Results from force loaded and unloaded simulations and experiments with a physical prototype are discussed. This paper presents a framework for developing a universal network infrastructure that would allow web-based monitoring and control of industrial processes, research facilities, and academic experiments. Internet technology is used here for its versatility, wide availability, and relative low cost. The main element of the infrastructure is a web-server, which connects to multiple control-servers, which in turn are connected to various processing modules within a local industrial facility, Since the web-server is the system centerpiece, which provides smooth information flow, a robust, intelligent, and autonomous scheduling scheme is required. Once such infrastructure is established, remote users in an academic or research environment, or in an industrial environment will be able to carry out a variety of tasks including experiments, monitoring and supervision, process scheduling and reconfiguration, using a web-browser. The flexibility and modularity of the developed networked infrastructure provide the rationale for implementing a multi-level hierarchical monitoring and control structure for a process. The usefulness of such a hierarchical structure is demonstrated through an application example on an industrial fish processing machine, which incorporates intelligent adaptive control.

Many industrial processes involve the transportation of a continuous web of material over a series of rollers to obtain a finished product. The manufacture of polymer film is one such web transport process, which utilizes a series of rotating elements that act to manipulate the film. This paper develops a dynamic mathematical model of the “forward draw” in a polymer film production process. The model is capable of being implemented in real-time for control purposes, yet includes significant physical phenomena such as material damping. Experimental results from a pilot production plant are used to validate the model under steady-state and transient conditions. The model is then used as a basis for a feed-forward control scheme, which reduces speed variations in the forward draw by a factor of 8 and therefore improves considerably the film quality.

Opening ParagraphThe indigenous crafts of West Africa are so primitive in comparison with the mechanized industries of Europe that they may easily be omitted from schemes for future progress. Plans have been suggested for the extensive development of backward areas such as Nigeria as part of the post-war aim of the expansion of world trade. Large measures of social reconstruction, together with the starting of new industries and the improvement of old have been advocated in order that poverty may be lessened and the equipment of public services increased. Of many of these schemes there is no doubt that, if they were possible of achievement, industrial organizations would be set up that would have no relationship to African life as it is now. Experts in materials and industrial processes are not usually interested in sociological questions, nor are they accustomed to take them into account. They are concerned with efficiency, and have only to satisfy themselves that there is a sufficient supply of labour which is capable of manipulating machinery. Experts in the science of economics, for their part, have to decide whether there will be a market for the products of new or improved industries and therefore must necessarily examine some aspects of the life of the people in the area which they are studying. But the predominating factors of advertisement and price enable them to disregard deeper questions of cultural disintegration. Yet thorny questions would eventually arise upon which Africans would have decided opinions: such as the use of land for the exploitation of minerals, and the ownership and control of industries. The supply of labour might at first appear to Africans an innocuous, even a beneficial function, but later it might be discovered that the movement of workers into industrial towns was undermining the whole basis of their society

The use of the regression model is usually applied in experimental mechanics processes and allowing for modeling the relationship between one or more process variables. Besides, the regression models are used for monitoring of response variables as function of one or more process variables. The scheme is based on the residuals deviance from regression model for detecting any disturbance in the control variables. This paper presents the control charts from modeling of an experimental mechanic industrial processes that involve count variables. We illustrated the performance of scheme to case study based on real process.
