Timisoara is a growing city in the western part of Romania, in a seismic area, with a lot of masonry buildings with historical and cultural value, with interesting structural elements such as vaults, arches, slabs, walls, that were affected by earthquakes, subsidence of foundations, negative human actions or lack of interventions. Masonry historical structures in Banat seismic area present particular failure mechanisms, so there is a need for new, modern, fast, easy-to-apply and reversible consolidation methods. With this type of methods is possible to assure the local and global resistance, ductility, stability and rigidity for historical buildings. This article shows the consolidation methods that were applied on the buildings Sf. Gheorghe 3 and 4, in the historical centre of Timisoara, on masonry structures with historical value. The solutions that were applied are using new, innovative fibre-reinforced composite materials, in order to repair the existing damages and prevent further ones. The consolidation solutions with these new composite materials reduce the buildings vulnerability and present the advantage of being fast and easy to be executed.

the algorithm of complex diagnostics of a technical condition of building constructions and structures on the analysis of thermograms is offered. An attempt is made to systematize and logically build a sequence of stages of energy inspection of heat-consuming and heat-generating construction projects and their structural elements. The presented algorithm includes the main stages performed in such surveys. It differs from the known technologies of energy monitoring of buildings and structures by the presence of two additional stages, which are an integral part of any energy survey: determination of the relative surface humidity of building structures and the actual mass flow of coolant through the heating device for the analysis of thermal images. The implementation of energy (thermal imaging) and technical inspections according to the presented structural scheme requires not only the presence of appropriate instrumentation and measurement base, but also the involvement of highly qualified specialists (civil engineers, thermal power engineers, thermal physicists, operators-thermographers, etc.).

The paper presents problems related to the load-bearing capacity analysis of the building partitions of the cold storage facility. The subject of the case study are two different buildings built in the early fifties of the last century. Despite the similar cubature and the construction period, the structures of these buildings are different. The analysed cold store in Warsaw (Poland) is a steel and brick structure, while the second example concerns a reinforced concrete slab-pillar structure located in Wloclawek (Poland). In both cases, the issue related to the assessment of the current technical condition of the structural elements, including the safety of the load-bearing structure and the safety of its use was considered. Moreover, the permissible load for inter-storey slabs in both cases was determined. In order to properly determine the current load-bearing capacity of inter-story slabs, the archival technical and operational documentation of buildings was firstly analysed. Their technical condition was also taken into account in the assessment process. In-situ inspections of both buildings had been carried out. This allowed the determination of the scope of necessary tests and the selection of test and check points for each structural element. Such actions allowed to identify cross-sections of the structural elements and the parameters of built-in materials. The performed diagnostics also allowed to properly determine the technical condition of each structural element, the degree of degradation of the structure and to correctly determine its current load-bearing capacity while simultaneously satisfying both limit states - the Ultimate Limit State (ULS) and the Serviceability Limit State (SLS).

We were asked to design geotechnical structures to enable reconstruction of historical buildings. Buildings have to meet current standards so load bearing capacity had to be increased and underground garages can be built. A description of the securing construction pit is described below as well as the design of the deep foundation. The construction pit was secured by jet-grouting columns with struts and soil nails. Parts of the walls were underpinned by micropile trestles. Jet-grouting columns were also used for the deep foundation of existing walls.

The paper proposes an approach to determining the increase of the normative lifetime of building structures on the basis of the algorithm of numerical calculation of the residual life of structures, which is performed on the basis of the results of defining parameters obtained during the technical examination and evaluation of defects, failures and structural damage. To calculate the structures, the simulation of the stressstrain state of the building structures with the involvement of OK LIRA was used. Simulation allowed performing optimization of technical solutions and strengthening of structures for buildings. The methodology is used to design elements for strengthening the structures of buildings and structures. Reliable estimation and forecasting of the technical condition enables to prevent the occurrence of accidents of structures and their associated losses, to use rational use of funds for current and capital repairs, and to regulate the technical condition in such a way as to achieve the most effective use of fixed assets.

AbstractThis research is aimed to carry out a detailed identification of the external forces (natural and human factors of deterioration) and internal (building materials) which affect the bonding of walls in historical buildings. From this point of view, the structure of a building can be defined as a stable combination of elements which are conceived as a whole, in order to bear and transmit the pertinent loads to the ground in a safe manner and without exceeding the resistance limits of each one of these elements.According to this approach, relations between both types of forces will be studied, considering that internal forces have the purpose of counteracting the external ones in order to preserve the structural balance of a building. The appropriate understanding of these relations will allow to make up a methodological approach to operate on the bonding of walls in historical buildings, from the respect to its authenticity as structural and formal elements of architectural heritage. In this sense, respect to authenticity can only be achieved doing research on the building techniques and materials which were used in the time which a specific historical building belongs to, which facilitates to carry out the restoration and restructuration process of architectural heritage preserving its historical and artistic values.Given that structure differentiates architecture from the other arts, every operation on architectural heritage must start from the idea that structural elements accomplish a practical function, making a crucial contribution to preserve a building through ages, but they can also have an aesthetic function, expressing the artistic values of the time which they belong to. This idea has been reflected in history of architecture from the classical Greece, in a way that the structural elements of each time have become symbols of its architecture. In the development of this task, a problem can always be solved in different manners which are equally acceptable, because the attention and the effort which are invested in formal problems, beyond the requirements of structure calculation, overtake the sphere of mere technique and provide artistic values in an intentional or accidental way.

This paper presents a proposal for a historic building thermal diagnostics algorithm for the example of a historical townhouse located in Lviv, Ukraine. The authors proposed a testing and diagnostics procedure that should precede design and renovation work associated with improving the energy standard of the buildings under discussion. The procedure was presented using a case study of a selected historical building. The scope of the study included an assessment of the building’s technical condition, thermal vision diagnostics, wall moisture, and water absorption in the context of protection against rain. Sample thermal and hygrothermal calculations were performed for a sample architecture element. The calculations included simulations of partition envelope behaviour after planned thermal retrofitting had been carried out. Performing the presented thermal diagnostics methods in three interlinked blocks (A, B, and C) shall ensure the proper thermal retrofitting of historical buildings in the context of their further occupancy.

The study involves structures applicable in building structures. Present part I includes structures applicable in building structures. Building structures for this are classified according to functions. Two main groups can be distinguished: frameworks and building structures ensuring serviceability. Further subgroups can be distinguished within both main groups. Upon examining the structural frame it is clear that buildings can be well classified according to frameworks. The four-element-classification of vertical load-bearing structural elements, walls and pillars — wall frame, pillar frame, mixed frame and frames without walls and pillars — provide a rather simple classification. Considering the different construction technologies of walls and pillars, and frameworks differing from these provides a multi-element classification. Various subgroups can be distinguished based on the relationship between walls and pillars as well as ceilings within the individual groups.

The analysis of the results of the examination of the technical condition of buildings and structures of enterprises in the sphere of public utilities has been carried out. The basic principles and methods of functional and technological renovation of architectural objects are revealed, accompanied by the transformation of the architectural space and planning schemes of industrial buildings and structures. A number of architectural and structural studies have been carried out in the direction of finding optimal technical solutions for repair, restoration of operational ability and reconstruction of industrial architecture objects in the field of public services for the purpose of their renovation. Technical reports based on the results of technical condition survey of building constructions of buildings and structures exploited for a long time, especially if there were long breaks in exploitation and maintenance, should include a section “Activities to renovate the object”. There is a need to adjust the regulatory framework for design and construction in order to speed up the process of “survey – renovation project – construction of the object”, as well as to restore and improve the base of the construction industry for the implementation of renovation projects. Complicating factors in the process of developing renovation projects of buildings and structures are the lack of design documentation for most facilities, lack of quality certificates for building structures and materials of buildings and structures, the long process from technical inspection to implementation of working design documentation, lack of interest of city authorities in development and renovation of service facilities.

The paper discusses thermal quality improvement in historic buildings. It is based on a case study of a wooden historical building in an architectural style typical of Zakopane, located in the Podhale region of Poland. The building’s historical value and timber structure prevent the application of typical thermal retrofitting solutions. This paper presents an analysis of the possibilities of the improvement of energy performance of a historic building (villa) which included: a review of the available energy performance improvement solutions applicable to this type of building, with a particular focus on applying internal insulation; a technical condition assessment using non-invasive methods, the identification of problematic areas in terms of the thermal retrofitting of buildings with timber walls and decks; in situ tests: thermovision tests which showed the places with temperature distribution field disturbances in the building’s envelope, focusing on thermal bridges; measurements of actual thermal transmittance coefficients for extant partitions; measurements of the building’s airtightness and the microclimate in selected rooms; numerical analysis: an assessment of the influence of the thermal bridges on the building’s existing condition, an analysis of water content changes in wall systems post-insulation. The presented approach enables the improvement of the energy performance of timber historical buildings while preserving the historical value of its architecture. It is innovative because it tries to fill in a research gap concerning a lack of relevant guidelines in Poland. The research questions that the authors asked were as follows. Is it possible to improve the thermal insulation of a building’s wooden walls without adversely affecting the building’s technical condition? With regard to the necessity to meet nZEB (nearly zero energy building) standards, is it feasible to improve the timber walls of historical buildings? The study found that under the correct assumptions and while maintaining a responsible approach to design, it is possible to improve the energy performance of historical buildings without interfering with historical heritage.
