Timisoara is a growing city in the western part of Romania, in a seismic area, with a lot of masonry buildings with historical and cultural value, with interesting structural elements such as vaults, arches, slabs, walls, that were affected by earthquakes, subsidence of foundations, negative human actions or lack of interventions. Masonry historical structures in Banat seismic area present particular failure mechanisms, so there is a need for new, modern, fast, easy-to-apply and reversible consolidation methods. With this type of methods is possible to assure the local and global resistance, ductility, stability and rigidity for historical buildings. This article shows the consolidation methods that were applied on the buildings Sf. Gheorghe 3 and 4, in the historical centre of Timisoara, on masonry structures with historical value. The solutions that were applied are using new, innovative fibre-reinforced composite materials, in order to repair the existing damages and prevent further ones. The consolidation solutions with these new composite materials reduce the buildings vulnerability and present the advantage of being fast and easy to be executed.

Abstract In order to reduce assembly complexity and enhance the performance of structural elements utilized in transportation systems, a novel approach is presented that uses integral fit joints in the assembly of fiber-reinforced composite structural elements. While the application of composite materials in transportation structures is not new or unique, their use coupled with integral fit joint designs affords a multi-magnitude reduction in the number of components required to assemble transportation systems. Essential to this effort is the need to effectively model and analyze the composite integral fit joint specifically focused on assembly. This paper introduces pertinent issues in the design and assembly of transportation systems, the assembly of their structural joints, and defines assembly models and analysis methods for composite integral fit (CIF) joints.

AbstractThis research is aimed to carry out a detailed identification of the external forces (natural and human factors of deterioration) and internal (building materials) which affect the bonding of walls in historical buildings. From this point of view, the structure of a building can be defined as a stable combination of elements which are conceived as a whole, in order to bear and transmit the pertinent loads to the ground in a safe manner and without exceeding the resistance limits of each one of these elements.According to this approach, relations between both types of forces will be studied, considering that internal forces have the purpose of counteracting the external ones in order to preserve the structural balance of a building. The appropriate understanding of these relations will allow to make up a methodological approach to operate on the bonding of walls in historical buildings, from the respect to its authenticity as structural and formal elements of architectural heritage. In this sense, respect to authenticity can only be achieved doing research on the building techniques and materials which were used in the time which a specific historical building belongs to, which facilitates to carry out the restoration and restructuration process of architectural heritage preserving its historical and artistic values.Given that structure differentiates architecture from the other arts, every operation on architectural heritage must start from the idea that structural elements accomplish a practical function, making a crucial contribution to preserve a building through ages, but they can also have an aesthetic function, expressing the artistic values of the time which they belong to. This idea has been reflected in history of architecture from the classical Greece, in a way that the structural elements of each time have become symbols of its architecture. In the development of this task, a problem can always be solved in different manners which are equally acceptable, because the attention and the effort which are invested in formal problems, beyond the requirements of structure calculation, overtake the sphere of mere technique and provide artistic values in an intentional or accidental way.

Structural Vulnerability assessment of historical buildings is very important to carry them to the future. Turkey is a rich country in terms of historic masterships mostly from Ottoman Empire, such as mosques, bathhouses, churches and aqueducts. Especially mosques are the common historical structures in turkey. Therefore, in the present study, structural vulnerability assessment of historical mosques in Turkey was carried out. One of the existing ones is considered as a sample building and structural vulnerability assessment was carried out on this building. The sample building was selected as Konak Mosque located in Izmir, Turkey. The mosque was structurally investigated through advanced approaches. The mosque, constructed in 1755 by Ottoman at very central location close by the clock tower, is little one decorated with blue tiles. The mosque is also nearby a historical bazaar where the main historical business stream line is located. Konak Mosque is one of these new styles in that age. It can be named as a signature historical building representing Islamic minimalist oriented architecture with its unique octagonal plan. In the present study, the building was modelled by using the Finite Element Modelling (FEM) software, SAP2000. Time history analyses were carried out using 10 different ground motion data. Displacements, base shear and stress values were interpreted and the results were displayed graphically and discussed. For probabilistic seismic risk assessment, fragility analyses were also carried out and the fragility curve and surface were sketched for the mosque. Saddle point was determined on the fragility surface.

Abstract. It is substantially significant to protect historical structures, which are an important part of our culture, against natural disasters such as earthquakes and to be transmitted to future generations. The structural behaviour of historical buildings must be well known to protect such structures. In order to be able to determine how safe the historic buildings are against the earthquake effect, it is necessary to determine the earthquake performance. Nowadays, the most commonly used method for the modelling and structural analysis of historical buildings systems with complex geometries is the finite element method. In this study, Historical Konya Gazi High School was examined according to the present situation regarding the design and construction features with Regulations on buildings to be built in earthquake regions and structural analysis was performed in ETABS program. Graphs showing displacements, moments, shear forces and axial forces are used to interpret the results of the finite element analysis of the Historical Gazi High School. It has been informed about the stresses and damages that may be caused by any earthquake to this building, which has been serving the students for 97 years. It is aimed that this work will be a study to suggest a solution in terms of not losing the our historical values and delivering it to future generations.

Cultural heritage is the set of things, that having particular historical cultural and aesthetic are of public interest and constitute the wealth and civilization of a place and its people. Sharpen up methodologies aimed at safeguarding of monuments is crucial because the future may have in mind the historical past. Italy is a country that has invested heavily on its historical memory returned in large part by the historical building or the monuments. Furthermore, culture represents a fundamental indicator of the growth of the culture of a country. Consider a monitoring project of one of the most Impressive theater in the world, like “Teatro Massimo” in Palermo (Italy), means to add value to both of the issues mentioned above. Among several methods providing useful information about the conservation status of the structures, dynamic monitoring techniques are suitable to check and restore the global behavior of the buildings. The anomalous features diagnosis of the structural dynamic response is an index of alterations of the material state and, in the worst cases, is related to the presence of damaged structural elements. The present paper assesses, through a real investigation, the importance of dynamic tests on historical buildings. In particular impulsive tests return the main structural characteristics describing the current behaviour. Such tests are then crucial for updating numerical evaluation and check the need of restoring original main features or not, suggesting a strategy of restoration as well.

Maintenance and restoration of historical buildings are an important contribution to sustainability of cultural heritage. Refurbishment should be adopted to preserve the essential features of the building ́s history and cultural heritage. Reconstruction of internal plaster in historical buildings belongs to important treatment in a landmark area. Plaster of historical buildings is usually characterized by an open porosity, which makes it sensitive to the degradation caused by physical and chemical agents. Alterations and structural faults can lead to invasive interventions which modify permanently the cultural value and the structural behavior of the buildings, in conflict with necessary preservation requirements.Knowledge of the historical building interior microclimate is essential for the definition of suitable reconstruction. Computer simulation plays major role in determining air flow, which can cause negative influence within historic buildings such as high level of moisture, fungus, chemical reactions etc. In order to prevent deterioration of plaster and to retard their decay, protective products – nanofibers – could be applied on the historical surfaces. Using nanofibers should cause minimal modifications to the historic appearance and protect from negative influences.
