Global climate change is a clear and present danger to our environment, but the impacts of climate change on human health are less known. People in Asian countries are more susceptible to the negative impacts of climate change and the subsequent environmental exposures because of the high population density, rapid urbanization, and natural geography of the region. The objective of this multidisciplinary collaborative ecological study was to explore the impact of environmental exposures such as temperature (°C), noise (db), humidity (%rh), air conditioning exposure time (hours), and distance traveled to school (km) on the comfort and academic success of school children in Singapore. Analysis of a large dataset from the Singapore National Science Experiment revealed a positive correlation between the distance traveled to school and favorable environmental conditions (moderate temperatures, low noise, low humidity, and higher amount of air conditioning time) and student academic performance. The analysis revealed that the distance traveled between home and school for public school students falls within a larger range than that for independent (private) school students. On average, students traveled farther distances to attend schools of higher academic caliber thereby increasing their exposure to environmental pollution. Student exposure to pollution can be minimized if all schools adhere to higher standards of environmental comfort and standardized academic caliber. If students can attend the school closest to their homes, they can minimize their daily pollution exposure due to traffic/commute, thereby mitigating the resultant negative health consequences.

AbstractPedagogical agent is generally described as educational programs that guide, motivate learners while encouraging them during learning by providing feedback. The tasks (informative, guiding, or friend, etc.) and types (human-like, cartoon character, audio, text, etc.) of these modules can be classified based on various variables. Although computer-assisted instruction software is commonly used as a teaching material, research on modules integrated on such programs is scarce. Studies in the field have revealed that such computer-assisted instruction programs increase motivation of learners. In order to keep motivation levels high, these programs need to be adopted depending on the individual needs. Therefore, it can be beneficial to integrate software designed that can be personalized. In this respect, the present study was conducted with secondary school students to identify the impact of pedagogical agent on learners’ academic success and motivation. For the purpose of the study, four groups were formed. The first group received education via fixed pedagogical agent, the second group had the option to choose among several pedagogical agents, the third group received the education without pedagogical agent and finally the last group received the same education through traditional (non-computer) way. This four-week program was introduced to students via MS Excel program and the data was gathered as pre- and post-test method. The findings have revealed that interfaces impacted motivation and accordingly academic success in a positive way. As a result of the study, it is suggested that learners should be provided programs that can be personalized depending on learners’ needs and preferences.

This study investigated the impact of two teaching strategies of cooperative learning; Teams Games Tournaments (TGT) and Student Team Achievement Divisions (STAD) on reading comprehension achievement of Junior High School students with different reading habits. After 34 students in experimental and control class did a pre-test, they were treated by using TGT and STAD. The students were also assigned into two group reading habits; high and low. The experimental group received treatment of TGT whereas the control group was treated by STAD. Then, a post-test was administered, and its results were analyzed through two-way ANOVA. The results revealed that TGT and STAD are effective in improving students’ reading comprehension where F ratio (28.846) ˃ F table (3.99), but on the other side, students’ reading habit, both high and low, cannot affect students' reading comprehension. It was also concluded that there was no interaction effect between teaching strategies and reading habits on students’ reading comprehension. Keywords: teaching strategies, TGT, STAD, reading habit.

Studying literature encourages thinking both critically and creatively. It helps to understand and interpret life through the lens of prose, poems, essays, and novels. The KOMSAS genre of literary materials require good pedagogical practices to ensure academic success of a student. The pivotal focus of this study is to assess the advantages of using ‘Manga’ as a creative tool to teach KOMSAS or traditional Malay literary prose and to determine its effectiveness on students’ performance. The aim of the study was also to explore the impact of using ‘Manga’ to enhance creativity among students in the classroom where traditional prose comprehension is taught. A quasi-experimental design was chosen as methodology and a study was conducted with high school students of Form Four. The research instrument involved a statistical achievement test. Findings from this research indicated that there were positive changes in the performance of students who used this Manga module. Teaching methods which could stimulate students’ interest in learning were helpful for students. Additionally, this study also found that students’ perception towards the teaching methods used by the teachers influenced their performance The main finding also highlighted students’ increased creativity when ‘Manga’ was used as a pedagogical tool. Teachers and collaborators can use this study as a point of reference when promoting ‘Manga’ as a creative device to teach Malay traditional prose in today’s classroom.

The aim of this study is to determine the needs of Ege University (EU) students regarding orientation and academic consultancy services. The population (N=48975) of the study consists of students studying on EU Bornova Campus in 2012-2013 academic year; and the sample (n=1387) was chosen using an appropriate sampling method among the newly enrolled preparatory school students and first graders (n=8177) and among students who attend EU from 1st grade to 6th grade (n=40798). The newly enrolled students (n=352) and those continuing their education (n=1035) in the sample are students of 12 faculties, 4 high schools and 3 vocational high schools. Newly enrolled students were given questionnaires on orientation while the questionnaires handed out to students continuing their education focused on academic consultancy. The questionnaires were applied at two separate times. First questionnaires were given between May 5 and May 23, 2012; and the second run was between November 15 and January 15, 2013 with different students. According to the findings regarding orientation needs; at the beginning of the semester when the first group of questionnaires was handed out, students may have attached importance to needs like accommodation and health and wished to reach information on their departments quickly. Towards the end of the fall semester, on the other hand, they might have needed to get information about personal development for themselves. As for the findings about personal development; it could be said that newly enrolled students attach importance to career planning skills and several issues of personal development (dealing with stress, making decisions, effective time management, etc.). Students continuing their education may have had needs in this direction, albeit fewer in number. According to academic consultancy findings; EU students may not be satisfied with academic consultancy services provided in a general sense and it can be asserted that students do not benefit from their academic consultants very much.
