AbstractAnatomical variations in the hepatic arteries and in the celiac trunk are important in liver transplants, laparoscopic surgeries, abdominal radiological interventions, and perforating injuries in the abdomen. The goal of the present report is to describe an abdominal vascular variation observed during a routine dissection in the Anatomy Laboratory of the Centro Universitário São Camilo, São Paulo, state of São Paulo, Brazil, in a male individual. The superior mesenteric artery had its origin in the celiac trunk and originated a right accessory hepatic artery that followed its path all the way to the liver. Several authors described variations in the origin and in the path of the hepatic artery and even created specific classifications. The advance of imaging methods that increase the number of studied individuals, without the need of dissection, aids exponentially the quantifying studies that seek to determine a pattern in the variations present in certain populations. The variations of the hepatic artery, as well as of the celiac trunk, have been extensively described in the literature; however, there is no pattern in the number of variations found both in the celiac trunk and in the regular hepatic artery, what leads to a need of description in each case found.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed at investigating the relationships between health and work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) in dentists, and the relationship with socio-demographic, work and health variables.METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 204 dentists who work in public clinics in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. We used a self-administered survey that included questions on sociodemographic and health aspects, work-related factors, and the Nordic questionnaire.RESULTS: WMSDs were often reported in the neck, shoulder, lower back, and hand/wrists. Logistic regression analysis revealed that there was a correlation between reports of WMSD in the neck and age (OR = 9.48) and health problems (OR = 6.71). Moreover, strong associations were found between MSDs in the shoulders, gender (OR = 5.88) and breaks between appointments (OR = 4.17).CONCLUSION: We concluded that the health problems diagnosed, work-related activities and gender contributed to musculoskeletal disorders in dentists in this clinic.

In light of Judith Butler’s insight, including her theories of gender trouble and performativity, this article investigates Brazilian journalist and activist Fernando Gabeira’s trajectory against machismo, homophobia, and gender presumptions. That trajectory spans his formative years, in Minas Gerais (1940s and 50s), the armed resistance to the military dictatorship. in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo (1960s), the activism during exile, mostly in Sweden (1970-1979), and another 35 years of sociopolitical engagement, after his return to Brazil. Key to this essay’s central inquiry are Gabeira’s thoughts and experiences in his O que é isso, companheiro? (1979), O crepúsculo do macho (1980), and Entradas e bandeiras (1981).

Stroke mortality rates have a discrepant distribution according to socioeconomic variables as social exclusion in Brazil. Recently, data from race has been available from the official health statistics considering five categories: White, Mixed, Black, Asian and Native. We addressed in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, an analysis of cerebrovascular mortality according to race (excluding Asian and Native due to small number of events) and gender during 1999-2001 for people aged 30 to 79 years-old. For all cerebrovascular diseases, age-adjusted mortality rates (x 100,000) for men were higher for Black (150.2), intermediate for Mixed (124.2) and lower for White (104.5) people. These gradient patterns were similar for all stroke subtypes, except for subarachnoideal hemorrhage in which no differences were detected. For women, the rates were lower compared to men and the same pattern was observed among Black (125.4), Mixed (88.5) and White (64.1) women. Compared to White men, the risk ratio of Black men was 1.4. However, compared to White women, the risk ratio for Black women was 2.0. Concluding, there is a significant gradient of stroke mortality according to race, mainly among women.
