Interim management is defined as the temporary provision of management resources and skills, which can be seen as the short-term assignment of a proven executive manager to manage a period of transition, crisis, or change within an organization. In other words, interim management is the engagement by an organisation of a senior independent executive for a limited contractual period in a line management, staff or project role. The first phase in the interim management position is considered to be the “expectation, infrastructure, and exploring phase.” Expectations are high and team members are supportive and hopeful that interim manager will help them through change. If they've gone a long time without a leader, they may be hesitant and skeptical to get too close or share too much. It's truly the stage of golden opportunity where colleagues offer help and assistance to make the transition successful, even if it's temporary. Although the search for a permanent replacement continues, interim manager will begin to problem solve, organize, and stabilize the environment.Humility becomes the interim leader's best asset, especially if the role is outside his/her typical experience or comfort zone. The longer the interim position continues, the sharper the reality becomes. Expanding responsibilities from overseeing one unit or department to multiple units or departments at the same time can become overwhelming and short-term daily operational issues may seem to be handled without long-term thought, commitment, and passion. The last phase is one of accommodation to the situation, developing solutions, and problem solving at an operational versus an institutional level.Interim leadership roles filled from within an organization require leaders who take on additional responsibilities to effectively manage priorities, staffing, and, most of all, their time. There will be multiple competing priorities and deadlines in light of the additional responsibilities. If at all possible, interim manager should delegate some of those simple tasks to direct reports and accept the help of his/her colleagues. It will make them feel like they're contributing to the greater good and may spark a strength or project that may have gone undetected.

Abstract. When two dot arrays are briefly presented, separated by a short interval of time, visual short-term memory of the first array is disrupted if the interval between arrays is shorter than 1300-1500 ms ( Brockmole, Wang, & Irwin, 2002 ). Here we investigated whether such a time window was triggered by the necessity to integrate arrays. Using a probe task we removed the need for integration but retained the requirement to represent the images. We found that a long time window was needed for performance to reach asymptote even when integration across images was not required. Furthermore, such window was lengthened if subjects had to remember the locations of the second array, but not if they only conducted a visual search among it. We suggest that a temporal window is required for consolidation of the first array, which is vulnerable to disruption by subsequent images that also need to be memorized.

In the signal processing of real subway vehicles, impacts between wheelsets and rail joint gaps have significant negative effects on the spectrum. This introduces great difficulties for the fault diagnosis of gearboxes. To solve this problem, this paper proposes an adaptive time-domain signal segmentation method that envelopes the original signal using a cubic spline interpolation. The peak values of the rail joint gap impacts are extracted to realize the adaptive segmentation of gearbox fault signals when the vehicle was moving at a uniform speed. A long-time and unsteady signal affected by wheel–rail impacts is segmented into multiple short-term, steady-state signals, which can suppress the high amplitude of the shock response signal. Finally, on this basis, multiple short-term sample signals are analyzed by time- and frequency-domain analyses and compared with the nonfaulty results. The results showed that the method can efficiently suppress the high-amplitude components of subway gearbox vibration signals and effectively extract the characteristics of weak faults due to uniform wear of the gearbox in the time and frequency domains. This provides reference value for the gearbox fault diagnosis in engineering practice.

To improve sustainability of polymers and to reduce carbon footprint, polymers from renewable resources are given significant attention due to the developing concern over environmental protection. The renewable materials are progressively used in many technical applications instead of short-term-use products. However, among other applications, the flame retardancy of such polymers needs to be improved for technical applications due to potential fire risk and their involvement in our daily life. To overcome this potential risk, various flame retardants (FRs) compounds based on conventional and non-conventional approaches such as inorganic FRs, nitrogen-based FRs, halogenated FRs and nanofillers were synthesized. However, most of the conventional FRs are non-biodegradable and if disposed in the landfill, microorganisms in the soil or water cannot degrade them. Hence, they remain in the environment for long time and may find their way not only in the food chain but can also easily attach to any airborne particle and can travel distances and may end up in freshwater, food products, ecosystems, or even can be inhaled if they are present in the air. Furthermore, it is not a good choice to use non-biodegradable FRs in biodegradable polymers such as polylactic acid (PLA). Therefore, the goal of this review paper is to promote the use of biodegradable and bio-based compounds for flame retardants used in polymeric materials.

This article discusses one of the main problems of user identification by keyboard handwriting - short-term changes in the keystroke dynamics of users in connection with its psychophysical state, as well as changes over a long time associated with the formation of keystroke dynamics by a new user or when switching to a new device. A method for determining the phase of working capacity by the time characteristics of the keystroke dynamics is proposed.

To effectively diagnose and treat patients, physicians must often cooperate, coordinate, and problem-solve with other healthcare workers. Successful teams in medicine define and work toward shared goals, employ the pertinent and appropriate qualifications of each member, and establish trust in other team members. Task-shifting passes certain roles onto other team members so that physicians can focus on their key areas of responsibility. A number of medical schools have adopted interprofessional education to train today’s physicians, but there are other strategies that are also being explored. Training modules such as Crew Resource Management and TeamSTEPPSTM are being adapted to the needs of the healthcare field. High-fidelity patient simulations are being used to replicate common situations encountered by healthcare workers. Also, many medical schools are using problem-based or team-based learning practices through which students work with one another to tackle and reason through clinical scenarios.

The tomb of Ramesses III (KV 11) in the Valley of the Kings is one of the archaeological sites of ancient Egypt that has received very little attention from the scientific community. The tomb was open to the public for a long time and is in danger of quick deterioration. The site was closed from August 2016 until October 2017 for the installation of new walkways, glass panels, and an improved lighting system. The Ramesses III (KV 11) Publication and Conservation Project now aims to record, document, and preserve the entire tomb. This article is a first report on the planned publication and conservation of the tomb of Ramesses III (KV 11) in the Valley of the Kings. Like so many other tombs in the wadi, it presents the astonishing case of a tomb that has been known for a long time but was never thoroughly studied. In the following, we present the research aims of the newly formed Ramesses III (KV 11) Publication and Conservation Project1 as well as the preparatory work that has been undertaken by our team members. All observations and notes were made over the last six years during short campaigns, partly within the framework of a previous research project,2 which constitutes the basis of preliminary work in KV 11. The article focuses on the historical background of the tomb, its research history, including former investigators and concessions, supposed causes of destruction, suggestions for preservation, and procedures for research and documentation. We present the main problems we have to deal with at the outset of the project and describe the methods we propose to adopt. Further annual reports on the progress and first results of our work in order to preserve this important site of Egypt’s cultural heritage will follow in due course.

Abstract This study explores how firms manage the entire life cycle of innovation projects based on the framework of harvesting and planting innovation. While harvesting innovation seeks new products in the expectation of financial performance in the short term, planting innovation pursues creating value over a long time period. Without proper management of the process of planting and harvesting innovation, firms with limited resources may not be successful in launching innovative new products to seize a momentum in high tech industries. To examine this issue, the case of Samsung Electronics (SE), now an electronics giant originated from a former developing country, is analyzed. SE has shown to effectively utilize co-innovation to maintain numerous planting and harvesting innovation projects. Both researchers and practitioners would be interested in learning about how SE shared risks of innovation investment with external partners at the early stage of innovation cycles.

During a severe accident or Beyond Design Basis Accident (BDBA), the reaction of water with zirconium alloy as fuel clad, radiolysis of water, molten corium-concrete interaction (MCCI) and post-accident corrosion can generate a source of hydrogen. In the present work, hydrogen distribution due to in-vessel reaction (between zircaloy and steam) has been simulated inside a WWER-1000 reactor containment. In the first step, the thermal hydraulic parameters of containment have been simulated for a DECL (Double Ended Cold Leg) accident (DBA phase) in both short and long time and the effects of spray as Engineering Safety Features (ESFs) on mitigating the parameters have been studied. In the second step, it has been assumed that the accident developed into an in-vessel core melting accident. While in pre-phase of core melting (severe accident phase), hydrogen will be produced as a result of zircaloy and steam reaction (BDBA phase), the hydrogen distribution has been simulated for 23 cells inside the reactor containment by using CONTAIN 2.0 (Best estimate code) and MELCOR 1.8.6 codes. Finally, the results have been compared to FSAR results. As it can be seen from the comparisons, both CONTAIN and MELCOR codes can predict the results in good agreement with FSAR (ANGAR code) results. CONTAIN shows peak pressure around 0.36 MPa in short-term and this amount is about 0.38 and 0.4 MPa for MELCOR and ANGAR (FSAR) results respectively. All these values are under design pressure that is around 0.46 MPa. Cell 20 has the maximum mole fraction of hydrogen in long-term about 9.5% while the maximum amount of hydrogen takes place in cell 22. The differences between the results of codes are because of different equations, Models, Numerical methods and assumptions that have been considered by the codes. The simulated Hydrogen Distribution Map (HDM) can be used for upgrading the location of HCAV systems and Hydrogen Mitigator features (like the recombiners and ignitors) inside the containment to reduce the risk of hydrogen explosion.

In this article discusses the mechanical properties of foam concrete, which submitted based on the experimental data of long force resistance and deformation of compression elements from foam concrete. Also submitted criterion range of strength and deformation characteristics of foam concrete different structural modification with taking into account the permanently acting load, which necessary for calculation and design structures of buildings. In article such characteristics of foam concrete as durability and deformability at the age of 28 days by results of short-term tests and also influence of average density and a type of structure on its durability and deformability are considered. Change of mechanical properties of foam concrete in time by results of short-term tests is analyzed and studied. Experimental and theoretical researches which have in turn allowed to recommend for rationing of value of settlement characteristics the foam of concrete taking into account their variability, aging and duration of action of loading are executed.
