Researchers often want to examine the relationship between a variable of interest and multiple related outcomes. To avoid problems of inference that arise from testing multiple hypotheses, one can create a summary index of the outcomes. Summary indices facilitate generalizing findings and can be more powerful than individual tests. In this article, we introduce a command, swindex, that implements the generalized least-squares method of index construction proposed by Anderson (2008, Journal of the American Statistical Association 103: 1481–1495). We describe the command and its options and provide an example based on Blattman, Fiala, and Martinez’s (2014, Quarterly Journal of Economics 129: 697–752) evaluation of a cash transfer program in Uganda.

Health, educational and socioeconomic status have been thought to be related to employment transitions in mid-life, but little is known about what the associations really are and how the associations change over time for British individuals. The purpose of this research is to investigate relationships between these factors and employment transitions for men and women in a British cohort. This paper uses the data set 1958 NCDS, and the method multiple imputation to impute the data, uses forward-backward stepwise regression to select variables and combine using average and weighted average to treat repeated measures. Lifetabe and Kaplan-Meier methods are used to show the distribution of duration to employment transitions. The discrete-time logit model of survival analysis is required to build the relationship between first employment, first unemployment and factors including health status, educational performance, and socioeconomic background. Our findings suggest more attention should be paid to improve health conditions, educational levels and socioeconomic background of individuals before age 16, which could shorten the time to first employment and reduce the possibility to be unemployed.

Equilibrium production, equilibrium price and equilibrium total revenue in the case of implementing third-degree price discrimination and unified pricing were analyzed under the condition of two oligopoly firms with 2 sub markets by complete information static game method, and the relationship between the three indexes of the two cases were studied. The results showed that, under the condition of linear demand functions of the two sub markets, the equilibrium output of unified pricing was equal to the equilibrium output of discriminative pricing; the equilibrium price of unified pricing was weighted average of the equilibrium prices of two sub markets while discriminative pricing; the equilibrium total revenue of unified pricing was less than the equilibrium total revenue of discriminative pricing.

A novel haptic decorating method on the surface of virtual clay model is proposed. The relationship between brush deformation and endured force is researched for the first time by applying the spring-mass model to construct the 3D brush model. Then, the collision detection between virtual hairy brush and virtual clay model is researched based on collision algorithm of weighted average distance. When the hairy brush initially collides with 3D exterior, the tactility is simulated and the interactive virtual painting on the 3D exterior is carried out practically. The 3D brush stroke is formed by superimposing 3D brush footprints along the painting direction and controlling the stress of the brush. The ink quantity in the brush footprint is determined according to the proposed positive correlation between the exerted pressure on brush and outflow ink quantity of the brush. A painting storage method is also presented for storing and displaying 3D stroke painting results. The proposed method has been successfully applied in the 3D virtual painting system based on real-time force feedback technology. With this system, the 3D brush strokes with 3D half-dry and ink diffusion results can be painted with a Phantom Desktop haptic device, which effectively enhance reality to users.

Knowledge of the relationship between net primary production (NPP) and export production (EP) in the ocean is required to estimate how the ocean’s biological pump is likely to respond to climate change effects. Here, we show with a theoretical food web model that the relationship between NPP and EP is obscured by the following phenomena: (1) food web dynamics, which cause EP to be a weighted average of new production (NP) over a previous temperature-dependent time interval that can vary between several weeks at 25 °C to several months at 0 °C and, hence, to be much less temporally variable than NP and (2) the temperature dependence of the resiliency of the food web to perturbations, which causes the return to equilibrium to vary from roughly 50 days at 0 °C to 5–10 days at 25 °C. The implication is that the relationship between NPP and EP can be discerned at tropical and subtropical latitudes if measurements of NPP and EP are averages or climatologies over a timeframe of roughly one month. At high latitudes, however, measurements may need to be averaged over a timeframe of roughly one year because the food webs at high latitudes are very likely far from equilibrium with respect to NPP and EP much of the time, and the model can describe only the average behavior of such physically dynamic systems.

Known volumes of 70-proof distilled spirits were fed to 68 volunteers, making a total of 141 separate doses. The amount of alcohol appearing in the venous blood, saliva, and urine at various time intervals after ingestion was determined by a modified Widmark method, and in the breath by the Breathalyzer. The relationship between time after ingestion, venous blood alcohol concentration (VBA), and Breathalyzer reading (BR) was as follows:(1) between 0.5 and 2.5 hours after ingestion, VBA = (BR + 0.048) ± 0.124 mg/ml;(2) between 30 to 40 minutes after ingestion, VBA = (BR − 0.071) ± 0.065 mg/ml;(3) between 2 to 2.5 hours after ingestion, VBA = (BR + 0.102) ± 0.117 mg/ml. The weighted average ratios of saliva and urine alcohols to venous blood alcohol were 1.12:1 and 1.24:1, respectively. The standard error of estimating the venous blood alcohol indirectly from the saliva alcohol was ±0.075 mg/ml, and from urine alcohol ±0.081 mg/ml when the samples were obtained from 0.5 to 2.5 and from 0.75 to 2.5 hours after drinking, respectively. Over the range of concentrations studied alcohol disappeared from the venous blood at the rate of 0.13 ±0.05 mg/ml/hr and the quantity eliminated from the whole body, per 100 lb of body weight per hour, approximated 0.4 fl. oz of 70-proof distilled spirits.

American basket option is a contract containing multiple underlying assets, and its payoff is correlated with average prices or weighted average prices of these assets on or before the expiration date. The type of option entitles a holder the right to trade at the strike price within a specified date, and this right can be waived. Therefore, there is a certain price to be paid for acquiring this right, which produces the problem of option pricing. A lot of literature shows blackthat basket option price is usually cheaper than option portfolios on individual underlying assets. Based on this advantage, basket option blackbecomes popular among investors. Consequently, this paper predominantly explores four types of American basket option pricing in uncertain financial environment. Specifically they are American arithmetic basket call option, American arithmetic basket put option, American geometric basket call option and American geometric basket put option. Assuming that these stocks prices follow corresponding uncertain differential equations, we derive corresponding option pricing formulas. Some numerical examples are taken to illustrate the feasibility of pricing formulas. Simultaneously, this paper discusses the relationship between option price and some parameters.

This study investigates the relationship between household credit and banking stability in Malaysia using a sample of 37 commercial banks spanning the period from 2008 to 2015. In analyzing household credit’s influence on the Malaysian banking sector’s stability, household credit was categorized into two components, namely mortgage and consumer credit. The Banking Stability Index (BSI) for each bank is constructed using 15 bank-specific variables and some macro-economic variables. The determinants of the BSI are estimated using a static panel data technique. The fixed-effects regression results showed a statistically significant negative relationship between both forms of household credit (mortgage credit and consumer credit) upon the banking sector’s stability. The finding signals that understanding the link between household credit and the Bank Stability Index is crucial to the policymakers and the banks’ management in closely monitoring household credit, particularly mortgage and consumer credit.
