Reports in the past few decades indicate that Nigerian cities have high noise levels that is claimed to impact the health of residents negatively. The present article therefore examine the rela-tionshipbetween levels of environmental noise in selected residential areas in Ibadan metropolis with varying reported cases of hearing impairments (HI). Data on cases of HI were collected from one hospital; noise monitoring was conducted with the aid of a noise level meter while copies of questionnaire were administered to residents to elicit information on public perception. The distribution of reportedcases of HI among residential areas in Ibadan city showed varying magnitude (p< 0.001). About 75 % of children diagnosed with HI cases were within ages of 4-12 and female children suffered more (53.9 %). Sensorineural and conductive impairments accounted for 88.2 % of all reported HI cases.Monitored noise levels vary significantly among the selected residential area at each of morning, after-noon and evening (p < 0.05). Noise levels at morning and eveningshowed significant correlation with cases of HI reported at each of the 10 selected residential areas (r = 0.81; 0.82). Regression analysis showed that noise level explained 70.1 % of the spatial pattern of HI cases. Residents indicated that their neighbourhoods were noisy, that noise levels were on the increase and that ceremonies and generator use were major sources of noise. An integrated strategy for noise control is urgently required to stem the tide of noise pollution so as to safeguard human health in Nigerian cities.

Transverse rumble strips (TRS) are commonly being installed to alert the drivers through sound and vibration effects. The sound produced affects the existing traffic noise level which caused noise annoyance to the nearby residents. This study aims to assess the traffic noise due to TRS at residential areas by determining the roadside noise levels, traffic and road characteristics and evaluating the relationship between these parameters. Middle overlapped (MO), middle layer overlapped (MLO) and raised rumbler (RR) TRS profiles with same thickness were selected. The measurements of roadside noise levels and skid resistance were conducted using sound level meter (SLM) and British pendulum tester (BPT) respectively. Traffic characteristics were evaluated using previous data measured using automatic traffic counter (ATC). In overall, MLO produced highest roadside noise levels with increase of 20.5dBA from baseline. Generally, the increase of roadside noise level due to TRS is strong with speed, weak to medium with skid resistance of TRS and no relationship with traffic volume. Based on three TRS profile types, MLO is not suitable to be installed on the roadways adjacent to the residential areas as the increase of roadside noise level is significant which is more than 5dBA compared to MO and RR.

Noise pollution, as a major environmental problem, is present in Banja Luka. The measured values exceeded the level of noise allowed, which is a great problem. Evaluation of the noise levels was carried out in the streets in the area with health institutions. Objectives of this research were to evaluate the environmental noise pollution in the City of Banja Luka due to traffic noise and to compare the measured noise levels in the city with legislation and to establish the connection between noise and the number of vehicles. Correlation between the noise level and number of vehicles was positive and significant during the study period (r=0.89). It is confirmed that, with the increase of the number of vehicle, the noise level increases, i.e. the decrease in the number of vehicle decreases the noise level.

Nowadays, noise pollution, one of the crucial environmental problems as a result of increase in the population, has caused physical and psychological negativities in people's lives. The increase in the number of vehicles along with the population, the lack of infrastructure in the existing roads, misbehavior of the drivers due to the lack of education lead to an increase in noise pollution. The current study aimed to determine how much noise pollution that people are exposed to in traffic, schools and hospitals in Kayseri, one of the most important industrialized centers in Turkey with a population approximately 1.4 million. The levels of noise pollution averagely varied between 62-72 dBA in the streets and it is observed that the noise level changes depending on the vehicle intense in traffic. The noise levels in schools ranged from 41 to 57 dBA in the morning when window was closed that were higher than the regulation limit. The noise levels in hospitals were between 46 and 58 dBA when window is closed. The results of the survey conducted among a total of 153 people showed that noise was considered as environmental pollution by 98% in residential, 90% in schools and 73% in hospitals. The most noise-related health effects specified by the participants was the headache with 41% followed by frustrated and stressed with 24%

An undesired or hazardous outdoor sound produced by human activities is referred to as environmental noise. For example, the noise emitted through industrial activities and transportation networks such as road, rail and air traffic. In Malaysia, most of the schools located very close to the roadside and near busy places such as cities, shops, and residential areas. This study aims to analyze the environmental noise in terms of spatial and temporal analysis in two primary schools in Terengganu State. The noise monitoring had conducted in two (2) primary schools with different land use; residential area (Batu Rakit Primary School) and commercial area (Paya Bunga Primary School) on the school and non-school days by using Sound Level Meter (SLM). The spatial mapping had constructed by using SketchUp® 2018 and Surfer® version 11 software. The noise level between both study areas was significantly different based on a p-value of less than 0.05. It also surpassed the Department of Environment (DOE) of Malaysia's permitted limit, with the Equivalent Noise Level (LAeq) in residential areas being greater than in commercial areas due to traffic volume and noise from nearby activities. Lastly, the area near the roadside has higher critical noise pollution compared with the location that furthers from the roadside. In conclusion, this study is useful in creating awareness to the public about the noise pollution effect on primary school students and is also can be used for mitigation measures to have a better place for students to study.

Environmental noise pollution affects not only the quality of life, but it poses a serious health and social problem. The Cirrus integrating averaging sound level instrument: model CR262A was employed to determine the noise levels at the twenty-two (22) selected sampling stations. The measurement of the noise was carried out during the morning, afternoon, and evening periods, to evaluate noise pollution within the twin city.Results indicated that there is no much difference (p>0.05) in the mean noise values within the different periods of the day at each sampling station, but there is significant variation (p<0.05) in the mean noise values at each period of the day over all the sampling stations. The results of the noise measurement showed that Enerhen Junction and NNPC Complex recorded the highest and lowest overall noise values of 84.84+5.39 dB(A) and 70 .90+2.98 dB(A) respectively. The results of this survey showed that the noise values at all the measurements points within Warri and Effurun metropolitan cities and at all the periods of the day is more than the Nigeria Federal Ministry of Environment (NFMEnv) and World Health Organization (WHO) permissible limit of 55dB daily noise level criteria for residential areas. The ssurvey requires the need to enact and enforce permissible noise levels/standards for residential neighbourhoods of 55dB by relevant environmental authorities both at Federal and state levels instead of applying 90dB standard meant for regulations in industrial settings.

Environmental noise may affect hearing and a variety of non-auditory disease processes. There is some evidence that, like other environmental hazards, noise may be differentially distributed across communities based on socioeconomic status. We aimed to a) predict daytime noise pollution levels and b) assess disparities in daytime noise exposure in Chicago, Illinois. We measured 5-minute daytime noise levels (Leq, 5-min) at 75 randomly selected sites in Chicago in March, 2019. Geographically-based variables thought to be associated with noise were obtained, and used to fit a noise land-use regression model to estimate the daytime environmental noise level at the centroid of the census blocks. Demographic and socioeconomic data were obtained from the City of Chicago for the 77 community areas, and associations with daytime noise levels were assessed using spatial autoregressive models. Mean sampled noise level (Leq, 5-min) was 60.6 dBA. The adjusted R2 and root mean square error of the noise land use regression model and the validation model were 0.60 and 4.67 dBA and 0.51 and 5.90 dBA, respectively. Nearly 75% of city blocks and 85% of city communities have predicted daytime noise level higher than 55 dBA. Of the socioeconomic variables explored, only community per capita income was associated with mean community predicted noise levels, and was highest for communities with incomes in the 2nd quartile. Both the noise measurements and land-use regression modeling demonstrate that Chicago has levels of environmental noise likely contributing to the total burden of environmental stressors. Noise is not uniformly distributed across Chicago; it is associated with proximity to roads and public transportation, and is higher among communities with mid-to-low incomes per capita, which highlights how socially and economically disadvantaged communities may be disproportionately impacted by this environmental exposure.

The section of Via Baltica going through the territory of the Republic of Lithuania is the most traffic intensive land logistics corridor in the country. The annual transportation volume has been increasing on this road; thus, the reduction of pollution caused by vehicles has become important. If gas emissions are regulated, and carriers have to pay pollution taxes, this does not apply to noise levels. The article presents the traffic intensity in this logistics corridor, measurements of the noise level at the characteristic points, its relation to the number of vehicles passing through it and an expert evaluation of proposed methods for noise energy reduction. Environmental noise is an unwanted or harmful sound that propagates in terms of both duration and geographical coverage. Noise is associated with many human activities, but road, rail and air traffic noises have the greatest impact. Due to irrationally arranged transport network, the transit flow of freight transport crosses residential areas of the city, places of rest and recreation of the population, causing high noise levels in adjacent areas. This is the biggest problem for the urban environment. Environmental noise affects many Europeans and is therefore considered by society to be one of the biggest environmental problems. This article presents an assessment of a new traffic noise algorithm. The presented expert survey on noise energy reduction allows choosing the most appropriate method for reducing noise energy in Via Baltica transport logistics corridor. Based on the expert survey, a hierarchical table for noise energy reduction was compiled. It will allow assessing the validity of individual noise energy reduction solutions. It has become relevant for improving infrastructure of other transport corridors and choosing the most appropriate solutions to reduce vehicle noise pollution. A further application of this model can be focused on economic evaluation, forecasting of expected benefits and so on.

The study was carried out to ascertain the level of noise pollution at five different hatbazars (periodic markets) of Butwal Sub-Metropolitan city by using Dick Smith Digital Sound Level Meter Q 1362 in the specific time from 4:00 PM to 5:00PM in the month of June 2016 on a hatbazar day and a usual day. The result shows that the heighest Leq of 79.8 dB(A) was observed on hatbazar day at Butwal hatbazar. However, on non hatbazar day the highest Leq of 71.9 dB(A) was observed at Purano bus park hatbazar. The lowest Leq of 64.9 dB(A) and 54.6 dB(A) were respectively observed on hatbazar day and non hatbazar day at Majhagaun hatbazar. The study shows that the noise level was found to be higher on hatbazar day as compared to non hatbazar day in all sampling sites. The commercial activities, crowd of people, unnecessary advertisement of goods, blasting of horns increase noise levels in hatbazars.The Himalayan Physics Vol. 6 & 7, April 2017 (61-64)

Durres is the second most populous place on the Republic of Albania. This paper was focused in the evaluation of noise level at different areas of Durres Municipality which were categorized based on their activities like industrial, commercial and residential. The main purpose of environmental noise monitoring was to assess the situation in Durres Municipality, to value the degree of impact on citizens and to create a database to better address the problems, in order to build an effective action plan to improve the situation in problem areas. Monitoring has two basic objectives, such as: to protect us from noise that hinders and disrupts our daily activity and to protect us in the future from increasing noise levels that would bring concerns to people and quality of the environment. To realize this study was used TESTO 816-1 supply that measures noise intensity level of a certain area. Measurements were carried out in different conditions of humidity and wind velocity, during morning and night time, from February 2019 to December 2020. Duration of each measurement was 15 min. The results of this study revealed that the average equivalent noise level was: i) in the commercial area (during morning time 51.92 dB, during night time 46.8 dB), in the industrial area (during morning time 57.69 dB, during night time 45.31 dB) and in the residential area (during morning time 53.59 dB, during night time 44.46 dB). As a conclusion it was evidenced that the noise levels for all the areas were over the permissible levels of 50 dB (during morning) and for commercial and industrial area were over 45 dB (during night). Also it was concluded that the consequences of these high levels cause moderate and serious annoyance for residents during the day and sleep disturbances (if windows are open) during the night. This paper suggests some improvements to decrease side effects of noise pollution.

This study evaluated noise pollution in Onitsha metropolis, Anambra State, Nigeria in 2019. Noise levels were measured at forty sampling stations in the morning, afternoon and night within the study area for dry and wet seasons using modern noise level instruments. A control point was established at ldeani/Nnobi Junction with coordinates N 06o 05’.282’’ E 006o 55’.891’’ which was used as a reference point and for comparison with the sound levels recorded in designated locations. The results showed that the maximum noise level in the study area exceeded the Federal Ministry of Environment (FMEnv) limit by 7.8% in the dry season and by 13.11% in the wet season. Noise LAeq exceeded the NESREA LAeq limit by 29.89% in the dry season and by 33.44% in the wet season. The study indicated that the mean noise levels in the dry and wet seasons were within FMEnv limit of 90dB .It also showed that high noise levels were recorded around major junctions and market places within Onitsha, which are harmful to public health. The study further showed that transportation activities and trading activities at the market places are the main sources of high noise levels in the study area. Health impact assessment should be conducted in Onitsha metropolis for residents. State government should enforce compliance laws and regulate the activities of industries in the areas.
