Due to various government regulations and many other environmental related problems industries have to focus on these issues if they want to make business in the competitive market. Implementation and certification of Environmental Management System (EMS) is very important for industries as it will help to remove many environmental related issues and for sustainable development. Environmental related issues play different role in developed and developing countries. Developed countries have set up their own environmental standards and regulations which should be fulfilled by industries of other countries to have business with them. Regulatory pressure play important role to save environment but other factors like customer awareness, competitor’s pressure, societal pressure etc. are also important. Environmental issues related to automotive sectors need appropriate investigations in developing countries. Various drivers which create pressure on companies to adopt EMS practices are identified by extensive literature review which is the main objective of this paper. It includes providing a background on related concepts, literature review on various environment related issues and the concluding remarks for this review to save environment to some extent.

Purpose This paper aims to identify the most influential barriers for environmental management system (EMS) adoption and determine the interactions of these factors in the context of Chinese textile and apparel industries. Design/methodology/approach The study has conducted two different research phases, namely, the identification of 13 barriers from the extensive literature available and expert panel discussion and using interpretive structural modeling (ISM) to investigate the complex relationships among these barriers and partition the barriers into a hierarchical structure to facilitate strategic analysis. Findings The obtained result demonstrates that insufficient information about customer’s demand is the most influential barrier. Furthermore, by analyzing the interrelationships among the barriers, management will become more aware of the barriers’ relative importance and focus on the barriers with stronger influence. Originality/value This work may help practitioners, academicians and regulators to focus their efforts toward implementation of EMS on various levels in business, especially for these textile and apparel companies operating in China.

In an attempt to overcome barriers to trade posed by numerous and often contradictory national-level enveironmental requirements, the International Orgnaization for Standardization (ISO) has created a voluntry set of uniform environmental management system guidelines for firms, formally known as ISO 14001. Firms may decide to implement an ISO 14001 environmental management system (EMS) and become third-party certified in order to improve their environmental management and to increase their marketability. This study examines the relative costs, benefits, and motivations for ISO 14001 certification for China compared to other economically developing and developed countries. These comparisons allow us to better understand the ways in which the unique economic and political conditions within China affect the incentives for Chinese firms to join in voluntary self-regulatory measures. Survey results indicate that ISO 14001 certified firms in China and experiencing benefits equal to or greater than their peers in other countries. Benefits to environmental management appear to be significant and they generally outweigh the costs of implementation and certification. However, as with most voluntary standards, the potential for abuse remains. Therefore regulators and policy makers are advised not to grant regulatroy relief or reduced inspections except on a case-by-case basis.

For some years now, Moroccan industrial companies have begun to integrate the environment into their management and to set up an environmental management system, in compliance with international standards, in order to meet the requirements of stakeholders. The fact remains that this management tool has enabled companies to control the impact of their activity on the environment by promoting manufacturing excellence. On a sample of twenty-two large industrial companies with a response rate of 55%, we conducted a quantitative and qualitative study, which allowed us to show the importance of EMS iso 14001 on the performance and competitiveness of the Moroccan industrial company.

The amount of MSMEs units about 99.99 percent of the overall number of business operators in Indonesia showed that MSMEs play a significant role in economic growth and development. At the same time, MSMEs cumulative contribution to environmental issues is not recorded MSMEs participation in the cleaner environment has not yet been noticed. Thus, the environmental management system for MSMes is crucial. This study is a literature review about the implementation of the ISO 14001 environmental management system in MSMEs, challenges and its future potential. The result and discussion discussed the case study of ISO 14001 implementation in Indonesia and other countries. Case studies from Indonesia and other countries showed that implementation of ISO 14001 is possible for MSMEs. The biggest challenges of its implementation is cost, the competence of employees, and resources available for the organization. An alternative for overcoming these challenges is implementing other models of EMS that is more suitable for MSMEs. The important aspects is the environmental awareness of the stakeholders and the internal and external drivers within the organization. Further studies can be done to research specific case studies of EMS such as ISO 14001 or AMEMs implementation in MSMEs.

The interest of scientists and companies in understanding the business implications of environmental commitments is timely; however, a dilemma remains at the firm level: is environmental sustainability a strategic factor for business competitiveness? The author contributes to this international end interdisciplinary debate through a double analysis, theoretical and empirical. Starting from a systematic literature review, the main correlations between environmental commitments and business performance are identified in a scholar's perspective. Based on the results from an Italian survey, the main added values associated with certified environmental management system are verified with a manager's perspective. Finally, the findings obtained from theoretical and empirical points of view are compared, to discuss confirmations or contradictions and underline questions still open.

The discharge permit system has been implemented for more than 20 years in China. Although some rules of discharge permit system can be found in laws and administrative rules and regulations, the discharge permit system has just been carried out as a pilot policy in some provinces. The discharge permit system only serves as a complementary measure of emissions reporting, registration system and total amount control system, while its important position in pollution management policies is still unclear. In fact, it can reduce the transaction cost by defining the property rights, to solve the problems of “free riders” and externalities in the first place. However, the pollution prevention system in China mostly works at a certain stage, with the lack of cohesion and connection. To problems existing in the environmental management, we should take advantage of the discharge permit system, and integrate the current environmental management system. The goal of atmospheric administration is better air quality, better public health, better public welfare, and better production capacity. To achieve this goal, we not only need to control total emissions, but also need to build continuously emission standards. Through the establishment of the atmospheric emission permit system, some of existing loose jumbled, high cost, inefficient management policies can be integrated together, which can benefit the improvement of the air quality, the reduction of the management cost and the increase of the management efficiency. The discharge permit system was first implemented in Sweden, after years of practice, its role in environmental management gains recognition. The discharge permit system in developed countries gradually became the pillar of pollution prevention, and became more institutionalized and normalized. The discharge permit system in China was first implemented in 1987, but our country doesn’t have a law of discharge permit system until now, and we have a certain gap with USA, Germany in emissions trading.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to determine lean critical success factors for manufacturing organisations in developing countries.Research methodology This paper is based on an extensive literature review of factors that influence the lean adoption process in developed countries and mapping these factors with lean current issues in developing countries to draw up successful factors suitable for developing countriesFindings The results of the literature review revealed several factors that influence the process of adopting lean manufacturing in developing countries, including the organisational infrastructure, trade agreements, political and economic environments, ability and willingness to change organisational structure and culture and, top management support and commitment.Limitations The recommended lean key factors are a conceptual-based model. An empirical based study is needed to provide practical evidence about the validity of that model

Environmental Management Initiatives (EMI), as part of the sustainability management movement, have become an integrated part of the organisational management practices and of the current research. Since the implementation of Environmental Management System (EMS), there have been many studies analysing this relationship with the environmental performance. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) also gained a great importance for the organisations’ performance, including their performance in the environmental area. However, previous studies analysed the direct link between those variables and environmental performance, while the mediating effect of those variables has not been tested yet because using a mediator in the relationship between two variables is a rather new approach in the research area used in the behavioural sciences area. This research analyses the role of EMI in defining the Environmental Performance (EP) of hotel industry, given the strong relationship between those two variables and the importance of the tourism sector for the economic development, both in the developed, but especially in the developing countries. It also investigates the CSR authenticity as mediator between EMI and EP link. Data was collected through a questionnaire of managers of the hotels in Pakistan. Correlation, Structural Equation Model and linear regressions were applied for testing the hypotheses and for checking the viability of the model. Findings revealed that EMI and CSR authenticity are important and significant determinants of EP in the hotel industry. Findings show that CSR authenticity acts as a mediator for the EMI and EP link. The stakeholder pressures and customers’ environmental awareness have forced the hotel industry to implement environmental standards and this shift of focus is more important in the hotel industry. The current research demonstrates that efforts of EMI is a prerequisite for enhancing CSR authenticity in the environmental area, and this, in its turn, contributes to the increase of the EP of hotel and tourism sector in a developing country. Given the lack of large financial resources of the developing countries, this model is an important outcome for the tourism industry that helps hotels to become green, to attract more clients and to gain competitive advantages.
