Elimination of cement in concrete was found to get increased with the introduction of geopolymer concrete. In that geopolymer concrete, natural aggregate was replaced by artificial thermal ash aggregate. The mix design was arrived by trail. The replacement level of artificial aggregate was 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 percentages by weight of natural aggregate. The results of workability and mechanical properties of the mixes are find to be good. About 135% in compressive strength, 15% in split tensile strength and 987% in flexural strength was find to be increased.

Large quantities of paper and wood waste are generated every day, the disposal of these waste products is a problem because it requires huge space for their disposal. The possibility of using these wastes can mitigate the environmental problems related to them. This study presents an investigation on the feasibility of inclusion of waste paper ash (WPA) or wood ash (WA) as replacement materials for fly ash (FA) class F in preparation geopolymer concrete (GC). The developed geopolymer concretes for this study were prepared at replacement ratios of FA by WPA or WA of 25, 50, 75 and 100% in addition to a control mix containing 100% of FA. Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solutions and sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) are used as alkaline activators with 1M and 10M of sodium hydroxide solution.The geopolymer concretes have been evaluated with respect to the workability, the compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and flexural strength. The results indicated that there were no significant differences in the workability of the control GC mix and the developed GC mixes incorporating WPA or WA. Also, the results showed that, by incorporating of 25–50% PWA or 25% WA, the mechanical properties (compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and flexural strength) of GC mixes slightly decreased. While replacement with 75–100% WPA or with 50–100% WA has reduced these mechanical properties of GC mixes. As a result, there is a feasibility of partial replacement of FA by up to 50% WPA or 25% WA in preparation of the geopolymer concrete.

Introduction:One of Iraq’s major environmental problems is a large amount of residual iron produced by the industrial sector, which is stored in domestic waste and landfills. The reuse of construction waste gives two aims, the first is to remove large quantities of pollution resulted from these waste, the second provides cheap resources for concrete aggregates.Methods:This study conducted a series of experiments and tests to test the feasibility of reusing this iron slag and recycled concrete aggregate in concrete mixtures. Different percentages of iron filings were used in the concrete mixture at 0, 0.5%, 0.75% and 1%. Tests are done to evaluate the quality of cast iron concrete which include compressive strength (fcu), flexural strength (fr), indirect tensile strength (ft), SEM and modulus of elasticity (Ec) for four sustainable concretes.Results and Conclusion:The results show that the iron filings amount is increased to 1.0% which resulted in increasing percentage of compressive strength (fcu), flexural strength (fr), indirect tensile strength (ft), SEM and modulus of elasticity (Ec) with 10%, 32%, 42% and 11% for Geopolymer Concrete with Recycled Aggregate (GCRA), 9%, 52%,31% and 17% for geopolymer concrete with natural aggregate (GCNA), 10%, 19%,26% and 12% for Normal Concrete with Natural Aggregate (NCNA) and 23%, 19%, 67% and 14% for Normal Concrete with Recycled Aggregate (NCRA), respectively.

Natural aggregate is not an environmental friendly material due to its destructive resource consuming nature. GGBS is a byproduct of steel industries, whereas GGBFS mixed with cement of 1:2 ratio making an artificial aggregate, whereas hardening powder used to spray made upon artificial aggregate to develop the strength of concrete. The basic properties of natural and artificial aggregates were determined. The mix design to be determined obtained for conventional concrete of control mix of grade M 25. The different mix proportions were prepared by replacement of 20, 40, 60, 80, 100 of natural aggregate instead of artificial aggregate. To check the compressive strength, split tensile strength determine. Based on the result we choose optimum percentage of aggregate and make it and concrete to determine the durability properties of concrete compared with natural aggregate.

Abstract: The main aim of this project is to evaluate mechanical properties of interlocking bricks using coir fiber powder as a substitute of cement and rubber tire waste as a substitute of fine aggregate (sand) with varying percentages of 0%, 1%, 2% & 3% and 0%, 5%, 10% & 15% in concrete and to help in solving environmental problem produced from disposing of waste tires and coir husk partially. Additionally fly ash was also added with varying percentages of 5%, 10% and 15% as a substitute to cement in a concrete mix. Several laboratory tests such as compressive strength test, flexural strength test, split tensile strength test, water absorption test and density of concrete etc., were conducted on hardened concrete specimen to achieve the optimum usage of crumb rubber tire waste and coir fiber powder in mix proportion of concrete. It is found that the maximum compressive strength value of coir fiber based crumb rubber interlocking brick was obtained at 1%CF + 5%FA + 5%CR, flexural strength value and split tensile strength value of coir fiber based crumb rubber concrete block was obtained at 1%CF + 5%FA + 5%CR. From the final conclusion or outcome of the project, optimum usage of coir fiber powder is 3% and crumb rubber is 5%. The split tensile strength and compressive strength of concrete mixed with SiO2and CaCO3nanoparticles have been experimentally studied. SiO2nanoparticles as a partial cement replaced by 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 wt.% and CaCO3nanoparticles by 1.0 and 3.0 wt.% were added partially to concrete. Curing of the specimens has been carried out for 7, 28, 78 and 128 days after casting. SiO2nanoparticle as a partial replacement of cement up to 3.0 wt.% could accelerate formation of CSH gel at the early ages and hence increase the split tensile strength and compressive strength. The optimal replacement level of cement by SiO2nanoparticles for producing concrete with improved strength was set at 2.0 wt.%. CaCO3nanoparticles as a partial replacement of cement up to 3.0 wt.% could consume crystalline Ca(OH)2and accelerate formation of calcium carboaluminate hydrate at the early ages and increase the split tensile strength and compressive strength. The optimal replacement level of cement by CaCO3nanoparticles for producing concrete with improved strength was set at 3.0 wt.%.

Plain concrete is susceptible to cracking under aggressive environment such as in freezing shaft. And addition of steel fibres in plain high strength concrete is proved to be effective in cracking resistance and brittleness improvement, etc. This paper presents results of experimental investigation carried out to study the mechanical properties of steel fibre-reinforced concrete having volume fractions of 0.38%, 0.51% and 0.64% for two types of fibres respectively. The results of this study revealed that there is an increase for all the mechanical properties such as compressive strength, split tensile strength, modulus of elasticity and flexural strength. Enhancement for split tensile strength and flexural strength is more evident than compressive strength.

Geopolymer concrete (GPC) has significant potential as a more sustainable alternative for ordinary Portland cement concrete. GPC had been introduced to reduce carbon footprints and thereby safeguarding environment. This emerging eco friendly construction product finds majority of its application in precast and prefabricated structures due to the special curing conditions required. Sustained research efforts are being taken to make the product suitable for in situ applications. The developed technology will certainly address the issues of huge energy consumption as well reduce water use which is becoming scarce nowadays. Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS) a by-product of iron industries in combination with fly ash has proved to give enhanced strength, durability as well reduced setting time. This study investigates the effect of GGBS as partial replacement of fly ash in the manufacture of GPC. Cube and cylindrical specimens were cast and subjected to ambient curing as well to alternate wetting-drying cycles. The 28 day compressive strength, split tensile strength, flexural strength and density of GPC specimens were found. The study revealed increase in compressive strength, split tensile strength, density as well flexural strength up to 40 percent replacement of fly ash by GGBS.

Self Compacting Concrete is a material used in the construction that has excellent deformability in the fresh state and high resistance of segregation, and can be replaced and compacted under its self-weight without applying vibration which leads to substantial advantages related to better homogeneity, enhancement of working environment and improvement in the productivity by increasing the speed of construction. Concrete can be formulated with high compressive strength but always has lower tensile strength. Tensile strength and other properties of concrete can be enhanced by adding fibers due to which the workability of concrete mix reduces and in order to achieve the desired Workability super-plasticizers is added. In the present work the use of fibrofor fiber in the production of self-compacting concrete (SCC) has been studied to identify how fresh and hardened properties of SCC are affected by the addition of fibers. The fibrofor fiber of 19mm standard length is incorporated into the SCC mixtures as 0.5kg/m3, 1.0kg/m3, 1.5kg/m3of concrete. Test on fresh SCC like slump Flow test, T50, V-Funnel test, J-Ring slump test and L-Box test were performed for an understanding of flow of SCC and tests on hardened properties like flexural strength, compressive strength and split tensile strength have been conducted to identify the hardened properties of SCC produced with fibrofor fiber. A comparative study between plain concrete, SCC without fiber and SCC with fiber has been done. Mix design for M40 grade concrete has been done according to EFNARC guidelines. The results reveal that the use of fibro for fiber decreases the workability but increases the mechanical properties of SCC. The optimum volume fraction of fibrofor fiber is determined as 1kg/m3 considering the optimized flexural strength and split tensile strength based properties of SCC. Due to increase in strength properties of fiber reinforced SCC that can be used for pavement construction and various other structures such as buildings, water retaining structures, reservoir structures and tunnel etc.

The use of fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) by-products as aluminosilicate precursors in geopolymer binders has attracted significant interest from researchers in recent years owing to their high alumina and silica contents. Introduced in this study is the use of geopolymer concrete comprising FCC residue combined with fly ash as the requisite source of aluminosilicate. Fly ash was replaced with various FCC residue contents ranging from 0–100% by mass of binder. Results from standard testing methods showed that geopolymer concrete rheological properties such as yield stress and plastic viscosity as well as mechanical properties including compressive strength, flexural strength, and elastic modulus were affected significantly by the FCC residue content. With alkali liquid to geopolymer solid ratios (AL:GS) of 0.4 and 0.5, a reduction in compressive and flexural strength was observed in the case of geopolymer concrete with increasing FCC residue content. On the contrary, geopolymer concrete with increasing FCC residue content exhibited improved strength with an AL:GS ratio of 0.65. Relationships enabling estimation of geopolymer elastic modulus based on compressive strength were investigated. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images and X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns revealed that the final product from the geopolymerization process consisting of FCC residue was similar to fly ash-based geopolymer concrete. These observations highlight the potential of FCC residue as an aluminosilicate source for geopolymer products.

PurposeThe influence of using magnetic water instead of tap water in the mechanical properties of the concrete exposed to elevated temperatures was investigated. Two concrete mixes were used and cast with the same ingredients. Tap water was used in the first mix and magnetic water was used in the second mix. A total of 48 specimens were cast and divided as follows: 16 cylinders for the concrete compressive strength test (8 samples for each mix), 16 cylinders for the splitting tensile strength (8 specimens for each mix) and 16 beams to test the influences of magnetized water on the flexural strength of concrete (8 specimens for each mixture). Specimens were exposed to temperatures of (25 °C, 200 °C, 400 °C and 600 °C). The experimental results showed that magnetic water highly affected the mechanical properties of concrete. Specimens cast and curried out with magnetic water show higher compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and flexural strength compared to normal water specimens at all temperatures. The relative strength range between the two types of water used was 110–123% for compressive strength and 110–133% for splitting strength. For the center point loading test, the relative flexural strength range was 118–140%. The use of magnetic water in mixing concrete contribute to a more complete hydration process.Design/methodology/approachExperimental study was carried out on two concrete mixes to investigate the effect of magnetic water. Mix#1 used normal water as the mixing water, and Mix#2 used magnetic water instead of normal water. After 28 days, all the samples were taken out of the tank and left to dry for seven days, then they were divided into different groups. Each group was exposed to a different temperature where it was placed in a large oven for two hours. Three different tests were carried out on the samples, these tests were concrete compressive strength, flexural strength and splitting tensile strength.FindingsExposure of concrete to high temperatures had a significant influence on concrete mechanical properties. Specimens prepared using magnetic water showed higher compressive strength at all temperature levels. The use of magnetic water in casting and curing concrete can increase the compressive strength by 23%. Specimens prepared using magnetic water show higher splitting tensile strength at all temperatures up to 33%. The use of magnetic water in casting and curing can strengthen and increase concrete resistance to high temperatures, a significant enhancement in flexural strength at all temperatures was found with a value up to 40%.Originality/valuePrevious research proved the advantages of using magnetic water for improving the mechanical properties of concrete under normal conditions. The potential of using magnetic water in the concrete industry in the future requires conducting extensive research to study the behavior of magnetized concrete under severe conditions to which concrete structures may be subjected to. These days, there are attempts to obtain stronger concrete with high resistance to harsh environmental conditions without adding new costly ingredients to its main mixture. No research has been carried out to investigate the effect of magnetic water on the mechanical properties of concrete exposed to elevated temperature. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of using magnetic water on the mechanical properties of hardened concrete subjected to elevated temperature.
