We report a rare case of Rhino-orbital cerebral mucormycosis ( invasive mucormycosis) caused by Rhizopus homothallicus in patient of uncontrolled diabetes mellitus. The organism was isolated from nasal scrapping and tissue obtained after surgery and was identied after fungal culture.

Fungal Osteomyelitis

Osteomyelitis is an inflammatory process of bone and marrow contents. These changes in bone are primarily seen in soft tissue followed by calcified tissue. It is an opportunistic infection due to the complication of some other conditions rendering the host susceptible to disease. Consequences of this infection range from draining tract to malignant transformation. Various etiological factors are involved in origin of the disease; among them, fungal origin is rare. Specific feature in fungal osteomyelitis is the involvement of maxillary sinus with a complaint of sinusitis associated with diabetes mellitus. Here, we discuss a case of osteomyelitis with fungal infection involving the maxilla. The patient is under medication for the past five years due to diabetes.

This paper reports a very rare case of isolated ulcerative lesion of the palate in a patient with type-2 diabetes mellitus. The patient refused to run any radiological tests, other than the periapical radiograph. This rendered the diagnostic dilemma more challenging. Through histochemical and immunohistochemical stains, the case could be non-invasively diagnosed as caliberpersistent artery. All differential diagnoses were excluded based on concrete findings.

Corona virus disease was declared as pandemic in 2020. The second wave of covid 19 in India was completely influenced by the fatal complication of covid 19 called Mucormycosis. It was declared as an epidemic in India after 2 wave. The use of Corticosteroids in the management of covid 19 and uncontrolled diabetes mellitus with other systemic illness has shown tremendous immunosuppression which has ultimately caused Mucormycosis. Mucormycosis is rare in mandible. We are presenting a case report with brief discussion of 9 patients having post covid Mucormycosis along with osteomyelitis of the mandible, the rarest form of the post covid infection, which was managed surgically as well as with adjuvant antibacterial and antifungal drugs followed by post-operative prosthetic rehabilitation. This fatal infection has to be kept in mind in covid 19 active cases as well as in recovered patients, especially in those having comorbidities and judicious use of cortico-steroids should be recommended.
