This article presents the teaching experience Pandemic, digital control and democracy conducted in the 5th AU and 5th BU classes of the “G. Bianchi Dottula” of Bari in the months of March and April 2020, in the lockdown period due to the Covid-19 health emergency. The path, based on the combination of research-action methods, consisted in the discussion of philosophical issues in a transversal perspective through a targeted DaD approach (with the help of Padlet, Google Classroom, Google Meet, Screen-cast-o-matic, Rai Scuola and many others), in view of the State Exams. In a historical moment in which the discussion on the present is of extreme urgency and the awareness of the processes in progress is decisive, the narration of this good practice could contribute to the sharing of didactically effective experiences in consideration of the next DDI.

The writing shows that the young’s of the rural sector in relation to higher education, require a prompt and fair attention of the state to help to overcome the difficulties they face once, they finish their media education studies, frustrating the development of the life project, of each teenage, which is built in this time lapse. It focuses on the importance of the formulation and execution of clear public politics suitable to the necessity of the graduates of those towns distant of the universities as is the specific case of Tununguá (Boyacá, Colombia). It defends the ed- ucation line the most suitable media for the development of the rural sector in our country. It implies coverage, economic help, orientation to the families and commit- ment of the young to make part of formative processes at professional level in the knowledge field the student selects and on this way to get other life styles for their families inside the framework of a country that promul- gates the right to equality.

Teachers’ training in higher education institutions widely serves general purposes. However, recent dialogues and research highlight the importance of teachers’ deep understanding of the material being taught and the ways students think about the content as critical components of great teaching. We explored the novelty of providing a one-day workshop entitled, ‘Effective strategies for teaching cancer biology’. The Biochemical Society supported the event and marketed it throughout the UK – not with any targeted level of university teaching experience and attendees therefore ranged from those who had never taught to those at the level of Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. The day included various short talks, the sharing of good practice and the opportunity to experience a demonstration lesson as a student. Twelve out of thirteen who provided feedback had not received previous subject-specific teacher-training. Half of the attendees gave feedback with the highest score out of five, having found the event ‘very valuable’. This experience suggests that subject-specific training may be beneficial and applicable to other subject areas.

I feel compelled by the moment to take up these questions: What does it mean to mother a Black child within/against this historical moment within/against the (carceral) United States? What does it mean to mother a Black child when the legacy of enslavement in the United States is still the basis for assessing the “worth” of you and your children? How do I determine justice for my/a/the Black child in this historical moment? How does this justice come to matter? My approach to critical qualitative research is best understood through Cynthia Dillard’s (2006) notion of “endarkened feminist epistemology” (p. 3). Here I trace a lineage of Black mothering praxis that has been enacted in response to injustice across different historical moments and geographical locations in the United States. This lineage focuses on Black mothers who have lost their children to state violence, when that violence is perpetrated by the state or when the state fails to mete out justice for the taking of Black life.

This study focuses on the unprecedented ways in which newspaper journalism helped the cause of democratisation at the height of the economic and political governance crisis, also known as the Zimbabwe Crisis, from 1997 to 2010. The research is designed as a qualitative case study of The Daily News, an independent private newspaper. It was based on semi-structured interviews with respondents, who were mainly journalists and politicians living in Zimbabwe. The analytical lens of alternative media facilitates a construction of how The Daily News and its journalists experienced, reported, confronted and navigated state authoritarianism in a historical moment of political turmoil. The study discusses the complex relationships between the independent and privately owned press, the political opposition and civil society organisations. The research provides an original analysis of the operations of The Daily News and its journalists in the context of a highly undemocratic political moment. Some journalists crossed the floor to join civic and opposition forces in order to confront the state. The state responded through arrests and physical attacks against the journalists; however, journalists continued to work with opposition forces while the government enacted repressive media and security law to curtail coverage of the crisis.

In recent years there has been an increasing tendency to use shakers rather than shock devices, for shock testing. The advantage of using the same transducers and fixtures for both vibration and shock tests, is that not only does this reduce initial equipment costs; it also complements the sophisticated digital control systems currently available and significantly reduces set-up and breakdown time in the laboratory. This paper presents a review of the state of art on testing by simulating a shock environment with shakers.

This paper presents a neural network-based digital redesign approach for digital control of continuous-time chaotic systems with unknown structures and parameters. Important features of the method are that: (i) it generalizes the existing optimal linearization approach for the class of state-space models which are nonlinear in the state but linear in the input, to models which are nonlinear in both the state and the input; (ii) it develops a neural network-based universal optimal linear state-space model for unknown chaotic systems; (iii) it develops an anti-digital redesign approach for indirectly estimating an analog control law from a fast-rate digital control law without utilizing the analog models. The estimated analog control law is then converted to a slow-rate digital control law via the prediction-based digital redesign method; (iv) it develops a linear time-varying piecewise-constant low-gain tracker which can be implemented using microprocessors. Illustrative examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.

From Athenian direct democracy to representative democracy was a groundbreaking success deriving from the development of democracy since medieval Europe. Through ups and downs, toward democracy is always considered as global trend, and elections are the first steps in the democratic process to create the legitimacy of the state. Abstract In reflecting on the range of my own and others’ work (and how it is mis/understood), the state of the field, and this special issue, I argue that if one remains vigilant and does not assume or take for granted that the inherent risks of saturation and issues such as aesthetic failure, around, for example, ontologies, epistemologies, and geographic locations are resolved (they aren’t), CIE is a field that can be widely expansive. Yet, in the spirit of my previous work around the interconnected dynamic of moving “from discoursal vigilance to concrete possibilities for inclusion” (Misiaszek, 2019), the field’s expansiveness is only important if it results in new, concrete contributions to education as a project of social justice in this unprecedented historical moment.

Abstract:Digital competence continues to be a challenge for pedagogic practice and educational innovation, and the integration of ICTs1 in the teaching experience. This article presents the results of research on teaching practices related to digital competence. From a qualitative approach, a multiple case study was conducted in two schools, identifying facilitators and obstacles in the process of teaching acquisition of digital competence, and delving into the attitudes and use of ICTs according to a school’s structure, strategy and culture. The results indicate that the complex process of acquisition of digital competence is the main difficulty of teachers related to the management of information, the didactic use of ICTs, the evaluation of digitally mediated activities and collaboration in virtual environments. The results also point to an image of isolation in professional development, hampering the exchange of experiences and meanings, and the perception of benefit and confidence in the use of ICTs. Teachers demand a training more consistent with their teaching needs. In relation to this, in-school project-based learning work has been recognized as a good practice. It was concluded that there is a need to reduce the gap between the desired digital competence and the actually acquired one by developing autonomous, collaborative, and prolonged training experiences that promote reflective practice and school innovation.
