Smart Mirror Using Raspberry PI: A Review

A Smart mirror is a mirror with technology integrated with it. It uses a two-way mirror and has an inbuilt display at the back showing us different information in the form of widgets about the date, time, temperature, daily news updates. The Raspberry Pi acts as the central controller, which powers the display and collects data through sensors. The data collected is stored on cloud servers for further use. The mirror comes with facial recognition technology, which helps authenticate the user every time the user comes in the mirror range. With the help of voice commands, the mirror application can be queried to get the desired data. This automation has helped in multitasking which strives to optimize time in our daily life. In this manuscript we will review different applications of smart mirror.

Sadness, Negativity, and Uncertainty in Education During COVID-19 on Social Media

The global COVID-19 pandemic increased social media usage to obtain information and to share concerns, feelings, and emotions, turning it into a prolific field of research through which it is possible to understand how audiences are coping with the multitude of recent challenges. This paper presents results from a social media analysis of 61532 education-related news headlines posted by the major daily news provider in Portugal, Sic Notícias, on Facebook, from January to December 2020. We focus on how the news impacted on audiences’ emotional response and discourse, and we analyze the key issues of the most commented news content. The results show a prevailing sadness among audiences and a very negative discourse all throughout 2020, with a high degree uncertainty being expressed. The main concerns revolved around parents supporting children in their first remote learning endeavors, financial sustainability, the lack of devices, the disinfection of schools, and the students’ mobility, particularly in the non-higher education context.

Semantic study of the use of association, ambiguity, and lexical meanings, daily news headlines of Sinar Indonesia Baru Medan

This research was field research taken from the Daily News Sinar Indonesia Baru, Medan. The problems to be discussed were association, ambiguity, and lexical meaning. The purpose of this study was to explore or find out the meanings contained in the Daily News headlines in the Sinar Indonesia Baru Medan. To analyze the meaning of the Daily News headlines of the Sinar Indonesia Baru, a structural-semantic theory was used which referred to Abdul Chaer's view. The method used in data collection was the listening method by listening to the collection of existing materials on the daily news headlines of the Medan Sinar Indonesia Baru, then proceeding with the note-taking technique.After that, they were grouped based on the uses of association, ambiguity, and lexical meanings found in the headlines. The equivalent method was a method whose determination tool was outside and did not become part of the language in question (Sudariyanto, 1993:13). In this case, the basic technique used was the determining element sorting technique. As a continuation, a qualitative description method was used. This means that this qualitative method as a whole makes use of interpretive ways of presenting in the form of a description.

The mental health impact of daily news exposure during the COVID-19 pandemic: An ecological momentary assessment study

Consumption of distressing news media, which increased substantially during the COVID-19 pandemic, has demonstrable negative effects on mental health. The current study examines the proximal impact of daily exposure to distressing news on mental health. A sample of 128 college students completed daily ecological momentary assessments for 8 weeks measuring exposure to news about COVID-19, worry and optimism specifically related to COVID-19, hopelessness, and general worry. Participants completed >22,700 surveys. Multilevel mediation models indicated that greater daily exposure to news about COVID-19 was associated with higher same-day and next-day worry about the pandemic. Elevations in worry specifically about COVID-19 were in turn associated with greater next-day hopelessness and general worry. Optimism about COVID-19 was not associated with daily exposure to COVID-19 news or to same-day or next-day hopelessness or general worry. This study demonstrates the mental health impact of daily exposure to COVID-19 news and highlights how specific worry contributes over time to hopelessness and general worry.

CDA IN THE PERCEPTIONS OF THE PUBLIC SPACE OF IMMIGRATION: THE IDEOLOGY AND ELEMENTS OF HALLIDAY’S THEORY (SFG) IN THE INTERPRETATION OF MIGRATION NARRATIVES IN THE US PUBLIC SPACE

The key point of this article is to provide an interpretation of the selected immigration narratives of two periodical New York Post and New York Daily News, focusing on CDA and the ideological issues approached from the perspective of critical linguistics relies on SFL Halliday (1985) and Hart (2014). This article applies the theoretical understanding and concepts associated with CDA, to the interpretation of media literature and periodicals. Because CDA and SFG have a common relation in the link between language and society. Accordingly, the study investigates a number of statements/ texts in the public space in America by means of critical methods associated with CDA; the aim is to discover the mechanisms by means of which tabloids manage to persuade/ manipulate a certain target audience of Western readers.
