UV rays cause skin damage such as loss of skin elasticity, wrinkles, sagging, and skin cancer. South Kalimantan is a wetland area with more than 4,000 species of medicinal plants. Mundar (Garcinia forbesii) is one of the plants in South Kalimantan. Mundar pericarp is empirically used for cosmetics which is believed to protect the skin from ultraviolet rays. The purpose of the study was to determine the sunscreen potency of the extract and fraction from pericarp of mundar (Garcinia forbesii) based on the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) parameter. The research started from material drying, making simplicia powder, extraction, and fractions. The extracts and fractions were measured for SPF values ??using a UV-Vis Spectrophotometer. The results showed that the ethanol extract and ethyl acetate fraction had weak protection, while the n-hexane fraction had extreme protective power with SPF values ??in the range of 6.51 – 30.00

The ultimate aim of this study was to evaluate antioxidant activities using DPPH and ABTS assay and antioxidant substances of Melientha suavis Pierre (Melientha) extracts with ethanol (EtOH) and subsequent partition with hexane, dichloromethane (CH2Cl2), ethyl acetate (EtOAc) and distilled water (W). The Melientha extract was assessed the sunscreen activities by sun protection factor which was compared with octyldimethyl PABA. Additionally, the stability test of Melientha extracts added in the cosmetic base-formula was investigated. The sun protection substances of Melientha extracts were determined by GC-MS analysis. Among the extract and fractions, the ethanolic extract showed the highest activities. The IC50 of Melientha extract to free radical scavenging determined by DPPH assay and ABTS assay were 53.20 ± 7.37 μg/ml and 64.17 ± 5.76 μg/ml, respectively. The total phenolic compound of ethanol extract was 149.87 ± 2.72 mg GE/g of ext and total flavonoid content was 51.60 ± 4.12 mg CE/g of ext. The sun protection factor (SPF) of ethanol extract was 26.61 ± 0.10. Cinamate and its derivative which were claim as sunscreen substance was found by GC-MS analysis of Melientha ethanol extract.

The over exposure sunlightis on the skin provides of damage. Skin damage caused the over exposure sunlightis can occur in the short term such as erythema or long term such as premature skin aging and even skin cancer. One way that can be done to minimize the amount of UV that penetrated into the skin is to use sunscreen. Corn cob contain the chemical compounds of phenolic, which suspected to have the protection activity toward the UV B rays. The study aims to make preparations hand body lotion that meet good physical quality of the corn cob extract  as a sunscreen. Hand made three body lotion formula with extract concentrations of corn cob 10% FI, FII FIII 15% and 20%. Testing the physical properties of the test hand body lotion include viscosity, dispersive power and pH. The effectiveness of a sunscreen is based on a determination of the value of the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) in vitro. The third formula has a good physical quality lotion that viscosity 50-1000 dPas, the scatter 5-7 cm, pH 4.5 -7. The effectiveness of sunscreen based on the value of the Sun Protection Factor (SPF), the effectiveness FIII in the category of extra protection is 7.23. SPF value FI  FII 5.13 and 5.67 so that FI and FII into the category of moderate protection

The sunscreens or Sun Protecting Agent is the materials protecting the skin from the exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays. Amount of Sun Protection Factor shows how many times the subject skin protection can be multiplied under the sun rays without erythema occurs. Kalakai contains some bio-active substance like phenol, flavonoid, alkaloid and terpenoid family which are proven as a very effective antioxidant. The purpose of this research was to determine the concentration of ethanol extract of kalakai root which has the potential as a sunscreen based on the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) parameter. Determination of SPF amount was carried out in vitro by UV-VIS spectrophotometer at a concentration of 50 ppm, 100 ppm, 150 ppm, 200 ppm, 250 ppm, 300 ppm, and 350 ppm with a wavelength of 290-320 nm. The result showed that kalakai root ethanol extract indicated potential as a sunscreen at a concentration of 300 ppm and 350 ppm obtained SPF values respectively 11 and 14 classified as sunscreens with extreme ability levels.
