The advancements in the technologies related to the wireless communication systems has made the vehicular adhoc networks prominent area of research in the automobile industry. The absolute volume of road traffic affects the safety, convenience and the efficiency of the traffic flow in the urban areas. So the paper scopes in developing an intelligent traffic control device model using the adhoc network to ameliorate the traffic flow. The proposed system enhances the convenience in travel by gathering the information of the vehicles along with the density of the vehicles and the movement of the vehicles on road. The device is modelled using the MATLAB and examined over the traffic flow on the peak hours as well as the normal hours and the holidays to understand its intelligent traffic control. The results obtained shows that the performance improvement in optimizing the traffic congestion through the proposed method is better compared to the existing methodologies used in traffic controlling.

Congestion is a major challenge in today’s road traffic. The primary cause is bottlenecks such as ramps leading onto highways, or lane blockage due to obstacles. In these situations, the road capacity reduces because several traffic streams merge to fewer streams. Another important factor is the non-coordinated driving behavior resulting from the lack of information or the intention to minimize the travel time of a single car. This chapter surveys traffic control strategies for optimizing traffic flow on highways, with a focus on more adaptive and flexible strategies facilitated by current advancements in sensor-enabled cars and vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs). The authors investigate proactive merging strategies assuming that sensor-enabled cars can detect the distance to neighboring cars and communicate their velocity and acceleration among each other. Proactive merging strategies can significantly improve traffic flow by increasing it up to 100% and reduce the overall travel delay by 30%.

Compared with the expressway, most of the traffic flow in urban road network can be denoted as interrupted traffic flow. Based on the current employed equipment for traffic flow collection and traffic signal control in urban roads, different types of traffic flow in urban roads are analyzed with the traffic flow arrival/departure model in transportation engineering. Mathematical models complying with traffic flow changes are utilized to match the traffic flow in both entry and exit road blocks, thus, enabled the automatic detection of traffic incident. This algorithm provides a measurement for the automatic judgment of urban road congestion and the expansion utility of intelligent transportation facilities in urban areas.

Urbanisation has led to rapid motorization and un-sustainable growth of transport infrastructure in developing countries like India. This increase in urban sprawl and heavy dependency on automobiles has caused high levels of air pollution. The emissions from road transport are partially responsible for ozone depletion, acid deposition and other climatic changes. In present scenario, the exhaust emissions of road traffic cause a lot of concern about the effects of air quality in urban areas on human health and the production of ozone in the troposphere. Central and State Governments have taken many corrective measures to reduce vehicle emissions. However, the development of scientific methods and rigorous emissions inventory is critical. Therefore, an attempt has been made to explore traffic control strategies to reduce emissions from road transport have been made. For the present study, pollutants are monitored outside for 24 hours (4-hourly sampling of gaseous pollutants like NOX and SOX and 8-hourly sampling of particulate matter) with frequency of two times a week in Jalandhar region in order to have 104 observations per year. The analysis of the data shows that the increase in the Respirable Suspended Particulate Matter (RSPM) with every passing year and being almost double than the permissible limit. It has been observed that with no or less public transport, more loads has come down on private vehicles and auto rickshaws which lead to increase in traffic congestion and pollution. Hence, it is suggested to implement new strategies and an increase in public transport in order to reduce vehicular emissions.

Traffic congestion on road networks is one of the most significant problems that is faced in almost all urban areas. Driving under traffic congestion compels frequent idling, acceleration, and braking, which increase energy consumption and wear and tear on vehicles. By efficiently maneuvering vehicles, traffic flow can be improved. An Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) system in a car automatically detects its leading vehicle and adjusts the headway by using both the throttle and the brake. Conventional ACC systems are not suitable in congested traffic conditions due to their response delay.  For this purpose, development of smart technologies that contribute to improved traffic flow, throughput and safety is needed. In today’s traffic, to achieve the safe inter-vehicle distance, improve safety, avoid congestion and the limited human perception of traffic conditions and human reaction characteristics constrains should be analyzed. In addition, erroneous human driving conditions may generate shockwaves in addition which causes traffic flow instabilities. In this paper to achieve inter-vehicle distance and improved throughput, we consider Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) system. CACC is then implemented in Smart Driving System. For better Performance, wireless communication is used to exchange Information of individual vehicle. By introducing vehicle to vehicle (V2V) communication and vehicle to roadside infrastructure (V2R) communications, the vehicle gets information not only from its previous and following vehicle but also from the vehicles in front of the previous Vehicle and following vehicle. This enables a vehicle to follow its predecessor at a closer distance under tighter control.

In the last decades, the Italian road transport system has been characterized by severe and consistent traffic congestion and in particular Rome is one of the Italian cities most affected by this problem. In this study, a LevenbergMarquardt (LM) artificial neural network heuristic model was used to predict the traffic flow of non-autonomous vehicles. Traffic datasets were collected using both inductive loop detectors and video cameras as acquisition systems and selecting some parameters including vehicle speed, time of day, traffic volume and number of vehicles. The model showed a training, test and regression value (R2) of 0.99892, 0.99615 and 0.99714 respectively. The results of this research add to the growing body of literature on traffic flow modelling and help urban planners and traffic managers in terms of the traffic control and the provision of convenient travel routes for pedestrians and motorists.

The popular static electric traffic light controlling system can no longer sufficiently manage the traffic volume in large cities where real time traffic control is paramount to deciding best route. The proposed mobile traffic management system provides users with traffic information on congested roads using weighted sensors. A prototype of the system was implemented using Java SE Development Kit 8 and Google map. The model </strong><strong>was</strong><strong> simulated and the performance was </strong><strong>assessed</strong><strong> using response time, delay and throughput. Results showed that</strong><strong>,</strong><strong> mobile devices are capable of assisting road users’ in faster decision making by providing real-time traffic information and recommending alternative routes.</strong></p>

The paper is focused on the Fourier transform application in urban traffic analysis and the use of said transform in traffic decomposition. The traffic function is defined as traffic flow generated by different categories of traffic participants. A Fourier analysis was elaborated in terms of identifying the main traffic function components, called traffic sub-functions. This paper presents the results of the method being applied in a real case situation, that is, an intersection in the city of Bucharest where the effect of a bus line was analysed. The analysis was done using different time scales, while three different traffic functions were defined to demonstrate the theoretical effect of the proposed method of analysis. An extension of the method is proposed to be applied in urban areas, especially in the areas covered by predictive traffic control.

Abstract Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) have emerged as an appropriate class of information propagation technology promising to link us even while moving at high speeds. In VANETs, a piece of information propagates through consecutive connections. In the most previous vehicular connectivity analysis, the provided probability density function of intervehicle distance throughout the wide variety of steady-state traffic flow conditions is surprisingly invariant. But, using a constant assumption, generates approximate communication results, prevents us from improving the performance of the current solutions and impedes designing the new applications on VANETs. Hence, in this paper, a mesoscopic vehicular mobility model in a multilane highway with a steady-state traffic flow condition is adopted. To model a traffic-centric distribution for the spatial per-hop progress and the expected spatial per-hop progress, different intervehicle distance distributions are utilized. Moreover, the expected number of hops, distribution of the number of successful multihop forwarding, the expected time delay and the expected connectivity distance are mathematically investigated. Finally, to model the distribution of the connectivity distances, a set of simplistic closed-form traffic-centric equations is proposed. The accuracy of the proposed model is confirmed using an event-based network simulator as well as a road traffic simulator.

The paper focuses on the problem of traffic congestion at intersection based on the mechanism of risk identification. The main goal of this study is to explore a new methodology for identifying and predicting the intersection congestion. Considering all the factors influencing the traffic status of intersection congestion, an integrated evaluation index system is constructed. Then, a detailed dynamic decision model is proposed for identifying the risk degree of the traffic congestion and predicting its influence on future traffic flow, which combines the traffic flow intrinsic properties with the basic model of the Risking Dynamic Multi-Attribute Decision-Making theory. A case study based on a real-world road network in Baoji, China, is implemented to test the efficiency and applicability of the proposed modeling. The evaluation result is in accord with the actual condition and shows that the approach proposed can determine the likelihood and risk degree of the traffic congestion occurring in the intersection, which can be used as a tool to help transport managers make some traffic control measures in advance.

In the recent times due to the increase of vehicular nodes in a vehicular communication network, there is a need of developing efficient systems in order to optimize the vehicular traffic congestion issues in urban areas. The current research trends shows that most of the conventional studies focused on developing fuzzy inference systems based vehicular traffic congestion model which has gained lots of attention on detecting and minimizing the congestion levels.We have proposed a new approach towards detection and controlling of traffic congestion in VANET. The proposed system utilizes the communication channels very efficiently and irrespective of any kind of overload. This proposed system aims to introduce a novel framework for identifying traffic jam on Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks. In order to detect and minimize the level of congestion our approach will use a fuzzy logic based approach to notify the drivers about available routes during the traffic congestion. An experimental prototype will be set up to enable the graphical simulation.
