The application of simulation methods in the problems of inventory management is shown. Machine simulation includes the problem formulation, model building, preparation of a computer program, an assessment of the reliability and realism of the process under study, analysis of results and decision-making.

This chapter examines the effect of group dynamics on the 2016 decision within the administration of President Barack Obama to lead the international coalition in a mission to liberate Raqqa, Syria, from the Islamic State. The authors show that whereas the groupthink syndrome characterized the decision-making process of the US-led coalition’s decision to attack Raqqa, it was polythink that characterized the decision-making dynamics both in the US-led coalition and within the inner circle of Obama’s own foreign policy advisors. Through case-study analysis, the authors illustrate that groupthink is more likely in strategic decisions, whereas polythink is more likely in tactical decisions.

Village finance must be managed in a transparent, accountable, and participatory manner, and carried out in an orderly and disciplined budget. For this purpose, village officials must have sufficient skills to be able to manage village finances based on good governance practices. In general, villages will experience various problems in each stage of the village financial management cycle and decisions must be made on these issues. To improve problem solving and decision-making skills, training was carried out using lecture, discussion, and simulation methods with training participants consisting of village heads, village secretaries, and heads of financial affairs or village treasurers. During the training, participants showed high attention to the material provided by the facilitators and actively participated in group discussions and simulations. The trainees also considered that the material presented was relevant to their needs and it was hoped that the knowledge gained could be applied to improve the quality of financial management in their respective villages

The concept of minimum display quantity (MDQ) is unavoidable in brick-and-mortar retailing format owing to which, retailers need to ensure a minimum level of inventory displayed at each store irrespective of the revenue or inventory turns generated by a particular store. It is observed that majority of bricks-and-mortar retailers in India assume;(a) existing inventory management system is ideal to their store, (b) software solutions record accurate inventory movement, (c) involving store management team in inventory related decision making is risky/biased and most importantly (d) loss of sale due to stockouts is inevitable. Such assumptions and widely followed practice have created a predisposition and mindset in store managers and they believe that their store delivers revenue and profit to the best of its potential with the inventory which is made available to them through existing inventory management system and we cannot avoid a number of instances consumers are unsatisfied due to stockout situations. In this research, we have analysed the existing decision-making process and control systems related to inventory management of a select retailer, attempted to design a new framework and applied the same through an experiment to evaluate the change in (a) overall store profitability and (b) inventory related key performance indicators.

The Internet has brought about new possibilities for innovation and radically changed business activities. Internet shopping is a prime example of increasing popularity, which is exacerbated due to the recent pandemic. It is expected that e-commerce will accommodate more than a quarter of the total retail sales worldwide in the next few years. Given the characteristics of e-commerce, inventory management is of paramount importance for an effective and timely response to the online customers’ demand. Despite its relevance, the issue of warehouse excess inventory is not sufficiently studied in the operations management literature. This study explores the factors, including sustainability and strategic considerations, that influence the inventory destruction decisions as one of the alternatives for managing excess inventory. Applying the Fuzzy Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) method, the interrelationships between the decision factors are investigated and the decisive considerations are identified. Overall, the outcomes provide insights for the e-commerce practitioners and offer directions for modeling and managing inventory destruction decisions.

Consultant Selection is one of a classical problem in Multi Criteria Decision Making (MCDM). Most of the literature in Operation Research only concentrates on model building rather than developing an inclusive analytic tool that extends to a Decision Support System (DSS). In this paper, we deploy a case study approach to understand the user requirement for DSS development. We observe the process of consultant selection and the decision making at one of the technical department which involve in the infrastructure project in Malaysia. A two-envelope system and a simple Weighted Sum Model are currently in use. We demonstrate the abstraction and application based on two case projects. Sensitivity analysis is also performed and the result shows that the decision changed if it is solely based on fees or with minimal quality criteria.  Finally, we gather the findings from the organizational flows, user modelling and decision making process in order to benchmark with our future works. This will helps us to better understand and develop an improved decision support model or tools for consultant selection problem.
