Rapidly changing framework conditions for city development such as globalization, demographic trends, deindustrialization, technological developments or the increasing urbanization as well as the economic, social and political changes are profound and change our urban life. This leads, that the cities of tomorrow will differ essentially from today´s city principles. Therefore innovative, strategically wise and quick action becomes a criterion for success. Here, more than ever, local conditions and requirements must be taken into account as well as global framework conditions. The responsible parties have to set the course so that the “City” remains competitive and sustainable in the future. Therefore, innovation processes and sustainable strategies for dealing with the diverse and complex agendas of a city in dialogue with those who are responsible for it must be initiated and management systems established so that new things can develop continuously and systematically. This work illustrates how the boundaries created to manage and market future liveable and sustainable city destinations are the root of the practical and academic problems that trouble city management these days.  This paper aims to develop the new integrated Smart Urban Profiling and Management model, which presents a new integrated approach for city marketing as an instrument of sustainable urban development. In this way, comprehensive research was conducted to evaluate if the holistic city marketing concept that integrates elements of smart city strategies and adaptive management is a more suitable instrument and integrative process than conventional city marketing in order to improve the sustainable urban development. Therefore, in this work, the designed “Smart Urban Profiling and Management model” for city management introduces an alternative and holistic perspective that allows transcending past boundaries and thus getting closer to the real complexities of managing city development in dynamic systems. The results offer the opportunity to recognize the city and consequently allow to developing successful strategies and implementation measures. This study targets to contribute to this endeavor in order to produce new impulses and incitements in the city management field and shall provide a fresh impetus for a new understanding of city marketing as the initiator of development processes, mobilization and moderator in concerning communication and participation processes. This paper is written from a perspective addressing those responsible for the city- management, city- & urban marketing and development.

The strategic goal of city management is to ensure its sustainable development which requires a balance of rare resources. From the operational perspective, namely projects implementing sustainable development, the balance refers to human resources. They can be classified into the public or private sector and their cooperation is known as Public–Private Partnership (PPP). Building on the concept of sustainable development and stakeholder theory, the research develops a conceptual framework of stakeholder analysis in PPP projects. More generally, the research aims to contribute to a theoretical understanding of the determinants of sustainable city development and PPP success factors. The research claims that the PPP procurement is consistent with sustainable urban development and the PPP model, accompanied by the stakeholder theory, requires evaluation which balances diverse stakeholders’ interests along the triple bottom of sustainable development. The conceptual framework combines stakeholder attributes of preferred benefits and power and urgency. It includes a time and scope perspective. The research has a descriptive but also a normative character as the framework could be helpful to understand and engage stakeholders in sustainable urban development. The developed framework can be considered for the future construction of a model that can be implemented and tested. This theoretical research is based on a literature survey, applying methods of critical analysis and construction. The innovative approach of the research is based on integrated application of already known concepts of sustainable development, stakeholder theory, and Public–Private Partnership, which are all necessary to create a new approach to management of city development consistent with the known facts.

As marketing strategies are utilized for city management, entrepreneurial modes of urban governance started to be applied. In this chapter, an emerging city branding trend, Slow City branding will be analyzed in the light of sustainability. As the cities start to resemble each other, the identity of the cities which is defined by the local authenticity diminishes. The philosophy of slowness inspired other social and economic movements like slow food, slow tourism and slow city. Slow movement first in the form of Slow Food then Slow City/Cittaslow enables sustainable urban development. “Cittaslow” empowers cities to differentiate from other cities and form their identity by supporting local crafts, tastes, producers and promoting healthy and sustainable life. In this study, a comprehensive literature review about slow city movement is covered. Moreover, Seferihisar, the first slow city in Turkey is analyzed in terms of Cittaslow principles. At the last part of the study, a model is proposed summarizing the principles of slow city branding.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present a methodology developed on the basis of the Historic Urban Landscape (HUL) notion applied for the city of Cuenca in Ecuador. The identification of cultural values – among all the actors involved in the city – draws up a series of sustainable urban development strategies. Design/methodology/approach This methodology is based on the city analysis from the local community and multiple disciplines such as geomorphology, environment, urban planning, historic cartography, architecture, archaeology, anthropology, and economy. Further qualitative data collection methods included 16 workshops with 168 citizens, specific surveys, mapping, and on-site observations. The challenge of this methodology is not only its implementation in the world heritage city of Cuenca in Ecuador, but also the integration of the management of the historic centre within the overall city development plan. Findings The application of the HUL concept has allowed the identification of a series of strategies for the urban development where the points of view coming from different stakeholders were gathered. The project reveals the existence of values and attributes, so far overlooked in the actual heritage management system. In addition, a Geographic Information System database has been created with all the information related to Cuenca with the possibility of making it available for the community in the future. Research limitations/implications The project has been developed within one year with scarce economic resources: that is the reason why the planned activities took longer than expected. Social implications Social participation has played a key role in the development of the project. Originality/value This research process in Cuenca has led to its incorporation as a Latin-American pilot city for a programme developed by the World Heritage Institute of Training and Research for the Asia and the Pacific Region.

The paper is devoted to the substantiation of the approach to diagnosing the comfort of the urban environment from the position of the city marketing theory, namely, based on the management and commodity concept. The latter is characterized by the obligatory consideration of interests and their interconnection of all stakeholders residents, authorities, business community, etc., and also the focus on solving both tactical and strategic tasks of the city development. An overview of the main approaches and methods for studying the comfort of the urban environment is presented. The comfort of the urban environment determines the level of urban development as a whole. Therefore, it is necessary to treat this concept as a system-forming, and not a particular one, in contrast to the position of many authors. The basis of the proposed approach is a system of criteria that collectively reflect the functional, social and psychological requirements of citizens to the comfort of their living environment.

Growing urban areas are major consumers of natural resources, energy and raw materials. Understanding cities´ urban metabolism is salient when developing sustainable and resilient cities. This paper addresses concepts of smart city and digital twin technology as means to foster more sustainable urban development. Smart city has globally been well adopted concept in urban development. With smart city development cities aim to optimize overall performance of the city, its infrastructures, processes and services, but also to improve socio-economic wellbeing. Dynamic digital twins are constituted to form real-time connectivity between virtual and physical objects. Digital twin combines virtual objects to its physical counterparts. This conceptual paper provides additionally examples from dynamic digital twin platforms and digital twin of Helsinki, Finland.

City environment or urban environment is a complex social, economic and biophysical system, which emerged as a result of the human-nature interaction. Urban development issues, the city image and urban identity exploration in Latvia have become a key subject in times of economic globalisation as well as determination of city and district development direction and priorities for urban development programs is also the reason for such an interest. The article deals with the research on the theoretical and practical aspects of the city image, urban identity and city marketing. The author suggests distributing city image dimensions in order to analyse the city brands of Latgale as well as describing their impact on the city image with the help of particular characteristics. It is of great importance to include city marketing strategies into Latgale urban development programs. It is advisable to use K.Inn’s developed conceptual model of the urban identity formation in order to study city image and urban identity of Latgale.

The global concepts of the post-industrial period are considered in the example of the concept of the city of sustainable development. The main examples of existing global concepts of a sustainable city are presented, as well as the established way of life is considered in the analysis of concepts of a sustainable city in four areas: ecology, economy, politics, and culture. The development of modern concepts of sustainable urban development  X with their further classification is presented. A combination of concepts based on functional features, as well as social trends, is presented. To analyze the meanings inherent in an architectural work, the method of conducting of content analysis of the descriptive part of architectural concepts is used. The article analyzes the global concepts of" Sustainable Urban Development " and creates architectural concepts based on them as part of the process of learning of new challenges and opportunities that have appeared in modern architecture. The following global concepts are considered: a) the City of Sustainable Development; b) Urban agriculture; c) Arcology; d) SmartCity; e) Eco-settlements and Eco-Cities; f) Green standards in architecture; g) Technoparks. It is noted that in the course of its development, a number of concepts intersected or were completely absorbed by higher-order concepts. It is revealed that the concept of "the city of sustainable development" in terms of a set of indicators belongs to the category of "Architectural utopias", according to many evaluation criteria it coincided with the concepts of "ideal cities". For the most part, the similarity consisted in the presence in most concepts of "the city of sustainable development" of a description of attractive expectations of the "Results" of applying the concept and extremely vague descriptions of possible "Risks" and "Resource costs" that arise during its implementation.

The present paper addresses methods for formalization of engineering geological complexity of urban territory based on engineering geological zoning for purposes of urban and spatial planning. Presented is distinguishing three main sets of issues for purposes of urban development complex, improvement of environmental management and assessment of engineering geological complexity distribution, issues being addressed at two levels: at the city level - mapping the engineering geological complexity to scale of 1: 100 000 and at municipal level – engineering geological complexity maps to scale of 1: 25 000 with derivation of taxonomic formula of geological hazard; at that, cartographical materials are proposed as open data. For the first time it is proposed to use the complexity index and to plot the diversity curves for negative geological processes. Results of distribution analysis for complexity of engineering geological conditions made it possible to reveal a relatively low complexity of the structural uplift megamassif at the territory of the city of Moscow. The proposed methods shall help to develop "geoecological image" of the city and be used for better understanding of geoecological problems related to the city development.
