This paper attempts to examine the typologies of early Catholic churches in East Fujian Province, China, and analyze how they were internally relevant to local vernacular buildings. Focusing on the connection of architectural typology, this paper investigates the origination of the internal relevance, the Chinese path of Catholic church typological development, and the patterns of building techniques for Catholic churches in China. The conclusion indicates that both the early Catholic churches in East Fujian Province and local vernacular buildings were based on traditional Chinese craftsmanship, and therefore were isomorphic in their building forms. In the meantime, those early churches which hybridized traditional Chinese and Western architectural elements were typologically different from those “Chinese style” churches built in the Sinicization period of Christianity. This study contributes to enhancing the broadness and depth of the understandings of early Catholic churches in China.

As a place of holy worship, a Catholic Church should posses a sacred interior and exterior expression. Modernization has caused a good deal of this sacred expression of the Catholic Church to fade. As Catholic Church is a place of worship that supports all liturgical activities, semiotic theory are used to analyze and decipher its architecture to preserve sacredness. The research methodology that was employed was qualitative methods using Peirce’s semiotic principles and their implementation in Church architecture. The principle was then used to analyze two case studies in every detail of their draw up. The area of planning encompassed: (1) Scope of the surrounding environment; (2) Scope of the site; (3) Scope of the form. This analysis employed semiotic principles that were elaborated with Catholic Church principles to create a guideline in the architectural planning of a Catholic Church. The purpose of this research is to find the most dominant sacral expression between Santo Petrus Church and the Santa Perawan Maria Tujuh Kedukaan Church by means of the symbols attached to the architectural elements between these two Catholic Churches.

Arsitektur melayu memiliki tipologi yang sangat banyak, diantaranya rumah melayu Limas, rumah Lontiak, rumah Begonjong, rumah beratap Layar dan Bersayap, rumah Melayu Peranakan (campuran etnis China), serta beberapa tipikal rumah melayu lainnya. Selain memiliki 4 (empat) ruangan yaitu selasar, rumah induk, telo dan penanggah, rumah melayu juga memiliki ornamen yang terdapat pada atap lisplank dan dinding serta tiang rumah. Salah satu rumah tradisional yang ada di kabupaten Kampar yaitu Rumah Lontiok (Lentik) Melayu Majo. Tulisan ini mengidentifikasi dan mendokumentasikan rumah ini sebagai salah satu bangunan melayu yang perlu dijaga dan dilestarikan. Metode penelitian kualitatif dengan pendekatan studi kasus digunakan dalam penelitian ini dikarenakan objek penelitian yang sudah hilang dimakan usia. Teori tentang arsitektur Melayu dan ornamen bangunan Melayu sebagai background knowledge dengan didukung informasi yang diperoleh dari literatur dan data dilapangan serta pelaku kegiatan dalam lingkup penelitian. Pengolahan dan analisis data dilanjutkan dengan mengevaluasi dan membuat sketsa dan penggambaran ulang, kemudian diakhiri dengan penyusunan hasil temuan lapangan. Secara umum rumah ini dibagi kedalam 2 (dua) masa bangunan, bagian pertama yaitu rumah induk, dan yang kedua yaitu dapur, terdapat penghubung antara rumah induk dan dapur. Rumah melayu Majo merupakan bangunan bertipologi panggung dengan ciri khas atap Lontiak. Ornamen yang pertama kali terlihat pada rumah ini adalah Selembayung atau Tanduk Buang, terdapat pula ornamen seperti tombak terhunus yang disebut tombak-tombak begitu juga dengan sayap layang-layang yang terletak pada keempat sudut atap. Bermacam jenis ukiran juga terdapat pada setiap sudut bangunan ini.Kata-kata Kunci: Arsitektur Melayu, Kampar, Riau, Rumah Lontiak, UkiranMALAY ARCHITECTURE: IDENTIFICATION MALAY LONTIAK HOUSE OF KAMPAR MAJO TRIBEMalay architecture has a lot of typologies in roof forms, such as Limas, Lontiak, Begonjong, Layar and Sayap, Peranakan (a mixture of ethnic Chinese), and several other typical Malay houses. One of the traditional houses in Kampar regency is the Lontiok (Lentik) Melayu Majo house which was built involving the wider community and traditional ceremonies. This paper identifies and documents this house as one of the Malay buildings that need to be preserved. The research method used is a qualitative research method with a case study approach. The theory of Malay architecture and ornaments as background knowledge is supported by information obtained from the literature, field data, and activity actors within the scope of research. Processing and analysis data is continued by evaluating, sketching, and re-drawing, then ending with the preparation of field findings. In general, this house is divided into 2 (two) building part, the first line is the main house, and the second building mass is the kitchen, there is a connection between the main house and the kitchen. Majo Melayu House is a stage building with the characteristic of Lontiak roof. The ornaments that were first seen in this house is Selembayung or Tanduk Buang; there were also ornaments such as unsheathed spears called Tombak-tombak and Sayap Layang-layang on the four corners of the roof. Este artículo analiza algunas de las posiciones que los papas asumieron frente al proceso de la independencia hispanoamericana. Interesa observar cómo las transformaciones de la transición del siglo XVIII al XIX condicionaron la lectura de los pontífices enfrentados a una nueva cultura política liberal, republicana y laica y las amenazas al orden tradicional en un período de aceleración de las dinámicas históricas en el naciente mundo atlántico. Dentro de problemas específicos surgen el patronato, la cuestión del reconocimiento de los nuevos Estados republicanos hispanoamericanos y el intento por comprender, desde una nueva perspectiva, el porqué del establecimiento de Estados   republicanos confesionales en vínculos con la Iglesia católica, apostólica y romana, y la no aparición de Iglesias católicas nacionales a lo largo y ancho de la América hispana. Abstract This article analyzes some of the positions held by the popes about the process of Hispanic American Independence. Noteworthy is the analysis of how transformations brought about by the transition from the XVIII to the XIX century, conditioned the pontiffs’ beliefs when faced with both the new liberal, republican and lay politics and the threat to traditional order in a period of acceleration of historical dynamics in the new Atlantic world. Among specific problems, this article covers the birth of patronage and the acknowledgment of the new Hispano-American republican states. Finally we use a new perspective as an attempt to explain why states throughout Hispanic America developed into confessional republics linked to the roman apostolic catholic church instead of creating their own national catholic churches.

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> In the Souf region of Algeria, all vernacular buildings are covered by domes, built with an unusual building material, the desert rose stone, peculiar to the region. These domes represent an element of identity of the region and describe a unique urban landscape that deserves to be protected and enhanced. Unfortunately, these architectural elements have suffered damage that devalues the urban landscape compromising their conservation. In particular, many domes have severe cracks and have collapsed in large areas.</p><p>Diagnostic investigations were carried out with the aim to understand the causes of the damages and to carry out guidelines for consolidation.</p><p>In particular, in situ surveys have allowed to analyze the employed construction technique, the collection of samples for the chemical-physical and mechanical investigations of the materials and a manual geometric survey of a typical building module. In addition, a Finite Element Model of a building module was realized with the aim of investigating structural behavior.</p><p>Considerations were made on the influence of the dome shape on structural behaviour and on the fractures pattern detected in many domes.</p>

This article analyses the responses of the Catholic Church in Croatia and Italy to the refugee crisis, particularly the churches’ discourses on human rights issues and positions in public debates on refugees and migrants. Although both Catholic churches followed the Church’s teachings on ‘strangers’, associated with providing concrete help to people in need, the Catholic Church in Croatia pursued what can be classified as a charitable approach, while the Catholic Church in Italy followed solidarity and utilitarian approaches. Equally, the Catholic Church in Croatia remained a silent public actor in the refugee crisis, while the Catholic Church in Italy became a prominent actor in public debates, engaging with human rights discourses. The selective and ambivalent uses of human rights discourses emerged as a factor in understanding these two churches’ different positions on refugees and migrants.

This essay aims to present a detailed account of the restoration of the Catholic Church in Shanghai during 1979–1981 and then to explain how the arrests and suppression of Catholic leaders in late 1981 solidified the division between the official and underground Catholic churches. Two of the major factors that lead to the reemergence of the Shanghai Catholic underground community were the release and rehabilitation of veteran priests and other Catholic leaders and the dissemination of a 1978 Vatican decree that gave great latitude to the church, which was functioning in “difficult circumstances.” The essay ends with a discussion of current prospects of the Catholic Church in China.

This chapter examines the use of black imagery in three Catholic churches in Chicago: Saint Sabina Church, Saint Elizabeth Catholic Church, and Holy Angels Catholic Church. It first provides an overview of Chicago's black Catholicism before discussing Saint Sabina's visual ministry, led by its activist white pastor Michael Pfleger. In particular, it explores how Pfleger foregrounds his activist ministry in the visualization of the real and the imagined blackness of his congregants and himself. It then considers Saint Elizabeth Catholic Church's exterior mosaics of black martyrs and church fathers, designed by artist Ildiko Repasi who made a conscious effort to make her work conform to the spirit of the heavily damaged work that she was initially commissioned to repair. Those compositions from decades earlier focused on the history of those figures in Catholicism relevant to black Catholics and Saint Elizabeth's history. The chapter concludes with a discussion of Richard Hunt's liturgical sculptures at Holy Angels Catholic Church.

<p><b>Historically, Catholic churches have been the backbone of many cities worldwide. However, as a young country, New Zealand Catholic churches have not had as much power and impact on the surrounding communities as those in Europe. The number of people who consider themselves religious is declining in the ‘new world’. Furthermore, New Zealand has suffered from urban sprawl. Consequently, people tend to use private vehicles to travel to their churches, so the demand for parking spaces is being prioritized. This is forcing people into a state of disconnection with the place, especially since the surrounding area is typically neglected. </b></p> <p>St. Anthony's Church community is not exempt from this trend. The neglected landscape around the church and its affiliated school functions merely as a display for cars. It appears as a dormant space in which the culturally diverse community is unable to express it-self. This presents multiple opportunities. First, an opportunity to address the future improvements of the church and school’s outdoor spaces; an opportunity to develop this research into real project, and lastly, an opportunity to strengthen the bond between the complex community of St. Anthony’s Church.</p> <p>This thesis aims to investigate around participatory design through an extraction of the applicable knowledge derive from the theoretical framework. Through this, the relevant methods for participatory design will be use as a tool for engaging with the community of St. Anthony’s Church. The final aim is to engage and design with the Catholic youth, allowing them to lead the design process for their built environment through three workshops. This work is based on the understanding that Catholic youth can reclaim the lost relationship between church communities and the common ground they live upon. </p> <p>In this way, the research purposes to give back to the Catholic church community by guiding them to rekindle a sense of connection with, and a sense of custodianship over, their immediate landscape. The thesis represents the first step in a burgeoning project between the researcher-facilitator and the community of St. Anthony's Church.</p>
