Strength and Muscular Power for Functional Autonomy of the Elderly: a Brief Narrative Review StudyIntroduction: Population aging is an ongoing process and it is an issue of interest for authorities and professionals from different areas, since this phenomenon leads to a progressive and generalized loss of strength and muscular power, among other deleterious effects. In this context, the number of scientific studies increases, emphasizing the importance of strength training and muscle power in the functional autonomy of the elderly. Objective: To gather in the literature the effects of strength training and muscular power on the functional autonomy of elderly individuals. Methods: We conducted a survey of articles in full in the databases LILACS, Virtual Health Library (VHL), MedLine and PubMed, having as descriptors: "muscle strength", "muscle power", "functional autonomy" and "aging".Results: The literature shows that strength training and muscular power training, once taken care of with execution and duly quantified, are essential for maintaining / improving the practice of activities of daily living contributing to the functional autonomy of the elderly. Conclusion: The types of training analyzed can contribute to delay the deleterious effects of aging, positively interfering in the quality of life and the functional autonomy of the elderly.

Aging causes a reduction in the adaptive capacity of the organism. Therefore, there is a decrease in physical fitness, making it difficult to perform basic movements and the development of muscular power. Thus, to minimize this reduction, functional and traditional training can both be used; however there is no clarity about which is most effective. The aim of this study was to identify the influence of functional and traditional training on muscle power, quality of movement and quality of life in the elderly. Forty four older women were randomly divided into functional group (FG n=18), traditional group (TG n=15) and control group (CG n=11). Thirty-six sessions lasting 50 minutes were performed. Quality of life (WHOQOL-bref), quality of movement (FMS) and muscular power were evaluated. FG and TG increased significantly in relation to control group and to the initial FMS values. In FG and TG, muscle power significantly improved compared to pre-test, but not in relation to the control group. Regarding quality of life, only FG presented significant improvement. Both applied methods demonstrate the ability to improve the quality of movement and muscle power. However, functional training achieved better results in quality of life and movement.

INTRODUCTION: Ageing has become a huge public health challenge due to the need to find solutions for improving quality of life. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess quality of life, muscle strength, balance and physical capacity among elderly practitioners and non-practitioners of physical activity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An observational, cross-sectional study was carried out involving 74 elderly individuals in the city of Santos (state of São Paulo, Brazil), divided into two groups: practitioners and non-practitioners of physical activity. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire was used for the classification of the participants. The generic SF-36 questionnaire was used to assess quality of life. The Berg scale was used for the analysis of balance. Dynamometry was used for the muscle strength test. The six-minute walk test was used for the assessment of physical capacity. RESULTS: Significant differences were found between elderly practitioners and non-practitioners of physical activity regarding quality of life (p = 0.001), muscle strength (p = 0.001), balance (p = 0.001) and physical capacity (p = 0.001). The data also showed that aspects of quality of life were strongly correlated with physical capacity among the non-practitioners of physical activity (r = 0.741). CONCLUSION: Elderly individuals in the city of Santos (Brazil) who practice physical activity have better quality of life, muscle strength, physical capacity and balance in comparison to those who do not practice physical activity.

ABSTRACT The objective of this review was to analyze the evidence of Pilates in physical fitness related to health in the elderly. The article indexing databases (Pubmed, Medline, Science Direct, Scielo, Lilacs, and Cochrane) were reviewed along with the Pilates, elderly and aging descriptors. A total of 41 studies with a randomized experimental and quasi-experimental design met the inclusion criteria. The selection of the studies was carried out by two researchers and the quality of the articles was assessed using the PEDro scale. Interventions ranged from 4-24 weeks with 1-3 sessions/week, and balance was the most investigated variable. The studies included in this review indicate that Pilates improves health status in the elderly, promoting gains in balance, muscle strength, flexibility, functional autonomy, muscular endurance, body composition and aerobic endurance. Despite these findings, some variables need to be further investigated. Level of Evidence II; Systematic review.

AbstractThis study aims to discuss what it means to grow old with quality of life, to show how it is possible to face old age and to highlight that population aging and increased longevity are phenomena that have been occurring worldwide. In view of this scenario, the objective is also to highlight the challenges of the work of Social Work in the defense of the rights of the elderly, as well as to identify some of the social rights of the elderly that are not enforced. Thus, old age is analyzed, in this work, as a social construction in different societies, taking into account that the process of realizing the rights of people considered elderly is intrinsically related to the social and political history of the country. The social question, as a result of the capital/work relationship, neoliberalism and the working conditions of the Social Worker are analyzed as challenges for Social Work that deals directly with the attempt to enforce social rights, through public policies. Social rights are addressed as a result of the struggles that men have historically fought for their emancipation. Keywords: Social Rights; Aging; Longevity; Social question; Social Service.
