This paper contains the results of researches and experimentations on the reduction of the concentration of gaseous emissions and powders in the manufacture of ferrous alloys in aggregates of electric arc furnaces (EBT) coupled with a treatment plant (LF) located at Mechel Targoviste using new technology. Experiments have shown that using the new technology one achieves a reduction in pollutant gaseous emissions by about 30% and in dust content by about 25% compared to the use of classical technology, with particularly beneficial effects on the environment. The results have confirmed the validity of the new technology that used iron sponge in the loading phase, foamed slag in the melting phase and long electric arc in the production phase. The paper presents the results of the experiments using both technologies, as well as the equipment established and used in the experiments for the measurement and recording of the gaseous emissions and powders content, which ensured an accurate evaluation of the obtained results.

Electric arc furnace (EAF) steel manufacturing is an important recycling activity which contributes to the recovery of steel resources and steel scrap/waste minimization. Because of the content of plastics, coatings and paintings as well as other nonferrous materials in the charge during melting, a strong emission of pollutants, including polluting substance group consists of persistent organic pollutions (POPs) represented by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) occurs. This study was set out to investigate emissions of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDDs/Fs) from the stack of a new electric-arc furnace-dust treatment plant installed during modernisation of the Melt Shop in CMC SISAK d.o.o., Croatia. Obtained results have been compared with previously obtained results of PCDDs/Fs emission measurements from the old electric-arc furnace dust treatment without dust drop-out box, as well as quenching tower. The total PCDDs/Fs concentration in the stack off gases of both electric arc furnaces EAF A and EAF B were 0.2098 and 0.022603 ng I-TEQ/Nm3 respectively, and these results are close to previous obtained results by other authors. The calculated values of the emission factors for PCDDs/Fs calculated on the basis of measured PCDDs/Fs concentration in the stack off gases in 2008 and 2011 were 1.09 and 0.22 ng I-TEQ/ ton steel, respectively.

Rettery wastewaters were treated in anaerobic and aerobic ponds. Anaerobic treatment yielded efficiencies of BOD5 and COD removal as low as 20%. The treatment process conducted under aerobic conditions in aerated and stabilizing ponds arranged in series took from 18 to 20 days and gave efficiencies of BOD5 and COD removal amounting to 90%. The experimental results were interpreted by virtue of the Eckenfelder equation. Excess activated sludge was subjected to aerobic stabilization in a separate tank. A new technology was suggested for the existing obsolete industrial treatment plant.

Prices hike for consumable materials and energy carriers, increase of requirements to steel quality stipulate the items of intensification of ladle treatment processes and decrease of their energy- and material capacity. Analysis of energy losses in ladlefurnace accomplished, as well as basic factors effecting the energy costs during treatment analyzed. A methodology elaborated for making thermal balance of ladle-furnace: it was proposed to present the melt treatment process in ladle-furnace as a series of separate operations, each having specific features of the process (heating, desulphurization, alloying) and their combination. Based on analysis of 20 thousand heats passports at ladle-furnace of MMK BOF shop, a mathematical model of energy supply system of ladle-furnace was elaborated. Based on the analysis made, a strategy of heating automation was proposed. In particular, electric losses were emphasized, t. e. total losses of electric arc energy, in which provisionally losses at arc open part radiation were included. Control of those flows creates conditions for heating efficiency increase. Conclusions were made that decrease of electric losses is observed at prolonged (about 8−12 min) heating periods and sufficient amount of slag, as well as at injection of additives after heating. Such a mode provides decrease of thermal losses by 4−5%. A new technology of steel melt treatment in ladle-furnace was proposed, characterized by decreased consumption of electric energy.
