To understand the effect of mechanical stimulation on posterior sclera reinforcement (PSR), the rabbit scleral fibroblasts after PSR were subjected to stretch in vitro and MMP-2 and TIMP-2 expression of scleral fibroblasts were evaluated. Three-week-old rabbits were monocularly performed by eyelid suturation randomly to prepare experimental myopia eye. After 60 days, the experimental myopia eyes were treated by PSR. After 6 months, the posterior pole scleral fibroblasts (normal sclera - group A, sclera after operation - group B and fusion region of sclera and reinforcing band group C) were isolated and cultured in vitro. The cells were subjected to cyclic stretch regimens (sine wave, 3% and 6% elongation amplitude, 0.1Hz, 48h duration) by FX-4000 Tension System. The MMP-2 and TIMP-2 expression of scleral fibroblasts were evaluated by ELISA method. The results show that after cyclic stretch to the scleral fibroblasts of the normal sclera and the sclera after operation, the MMP-2 expression was significantly reduced and the TIMP-2 expression was significantly increased, the MMP-2 and TIMP-2 expression of the scleral fibroblasts of the fusion region after operation was no changed. It was indicated that the mechanical stimulation could regulate the MMP-2 and TIMP-2 expression of scleral fibroblasts and play an important role in the process of treating high myopia with PSR surgery.

ABSTRACT Objective:  To compare external root resorption (ERR) when bands and wires are used as orthodontic anchorage during rapid maxillary expansion (RME). Materials and Methods:  Histologic analysis was performed on 108 sites from 18 maxillary first premolars and on 36 sites from six mandibular first premolars in nine subjects (mean age = 15.2 ± 1.4 years) 3 months after RME. Maxillary teeth were pooled into two groups (n = 54 each) according to the type of orthodontic anchorage (band group [BG] vs wire group [WG]). Anchorage type was randomly chosen in a split-mouth design. Mandibular first premolars, which were not subjected to orthodontic forces, were used as the control group (CG). Results:  All premolars in the BG and WG showed ERR at the level of the cementum and dentin. Repair with cementum cells was observed in all resorption areas, but complete repair was rarely found. No statistically significant difference was found between the BG and WG with regard to the ERR. No association was found between the root height position (middle or cervical third) and the incidence of ERR. Buccal root surfaces showed a higher amount of ERR compared with the palatal and interproximal surfaces. ERR was not found in any teeth in the CG. Conclusion:  All maxillary first premolars subjected to RME showed ERR and partial cementum repair. Banded teeth did not develop more ERR than nonbanded anchorage teeth.

This study aimed to know the lifestyle punklung in Cicalengka Bandung. Subjects of research were Punklung community. Methods of data collection using participant observation, interviews (the spokesman for the community and some members of the Punklung community). Research results presented in descriptive qualitative showed that punklung’s lifestyle is influenced by several factors which are, attitudes, experiences and observations, motive, group’s reference, and cultural transformation. Punklung lifestyle oriented to arts, namely music. Judging from the activity, they formed a band group, despite the stigma that exists in society considers negative assumption about punk kids, but there is also a punk kid whose life clean of negative things, punk Kids have a positive view of themselves and others. Key factors which driving young people to join the community of the greatest punk because of the encouragement of it in those who want to be punk or having a like to punk because of their great interest towards punk which is used as a medium for self-expression and as a search for their own identity. Factors outside their milieu that they were mostly children punk.

The present project explains how crude biodiesel (crude BD) has been obtained by using coconut oil and ethyl alcohol as well as sodium hydroxide as a catalyst. The coconut oil was extracted with water which was submitted to evaporation afterwards. This experiment was carried out by adding the coconut oil in a 500 mL glass flask. The catalyst was dissolved in ethyl alcohol and mixed together with the coconut oil. Once obtained the mixture, this was stirred for 25 minutes at temperatures from 20, 30, 40, 50 to 60 °C. During the reaction, two phases were formed: crude biodiesel (top layer) and crude glycerol (bottom layer). The characterization was done by determination of pH (using an electrode located in the top layer connected to a computer by RS-232 interface system). When the separation concluded, the crude BD was rinsed in order to remove the catalyst. The characterization of washed biodiesel was determined by density and Saybolt viscosity. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) analysis was also made. The results by FTIR indicated the two functional groups of fatty acid ethyl esters (C=O, 1733 cm-1 and C-O, 1154 cm-1) and the OH wide band group of glycerol at 3400 cm-1. When the reaction time ended, the maximum pH value registered was 12.7. The values for pH, density and Saybolt viscosity were acceptable for crude BD and crude glycerol.

A retrospective, comparative cohort study was performed of metacarpophalangeal or proximal interphalangeal joint arthrodesis with either tension band ( n = 28) or compression (Acutrak Mini) screw ( n = 29) methods. We compared rate of union, healing time, complications, and re-operation rate. Union was achieved in 26/28 (92.8%) of the tension band group (9.4 weeks) and 24/28 (85.7%) of the compression screw group (9.8 weeks). Only 28 patients in the screw group were assessed for union as one patient in the screw group sustained a fracture at the time of insertion and was converted to tension band fixation. The complication rate was 8/28 (28.6%) in the tension band group and 8/29 (27.6%) in the compression screw group. Re-operation rate was 9/28 (32.1%) in the tension band group and 1/29 (3.6%) in the compression screw group. Our findings indicate that bone healing, healing time, and complications are similar in both groups. The tension band technique had a significantly higher re-operation rate (hardware removal), but was the technique for salvage following failure of the screw technique.
