Adjectives are one of the three characteristic forms of a verb, and this form imposes a second set of functions and properties on its verb function and properties. This situation requires special attention and special research on quality. An adjective can express itself in the text because it has its own subject, object, etc., that is, it can form its own syntactic device - predicate. He himself remains the predicate of this predicate. It is part of another simple sentence with the adjective and the predicate of this content. That is why we have chosen to dwell on the syntactic function and semantic side of the adjective, which is the adjective of the part of the adjectives in the Uzbek language. Accordingly, this paper examines the arrival and semantic-syntactic properties of the owner of a qualitative device as an object of secondary predication.

In this paper I firstly argue that secondary predicates are complement of v, and v is overtly realized by Merge or Move in secondary predication in Chinese. The former option derives the de-construction, whereas the latter option derives the V-V construction. Secondly, I argue that resultatives are hosted by complement vPs, whereas depictives are hosted by adjunct vPs. This complement-adjunct asymmetry accounts for a series of syntactic properties of secondary predication in Chinese: the position of a secondary predicate with respect to the verb of the primary predicate, the co-occurrence patterns of secondary predicates, the hierarchy of depictives, the control and ECM properties of resultative constructions, and the locality constraint on the integration of secondary predicates into the structure of primary predication. Thirdly, I argue that the surface position of de is derived by a PF operation which attaches de to the right of the leftmost verbal lexical head of the construction. Finally, I argue that in the V-V resultative construction, the assumed successive head-raising may account for the possible subject-oriented reading of the resultative predicate, and that the head raising out of the lower vP accounts for the possible non-specific reading of the subject of the resultative predicate.

The article touches upon the topical problems of modern linguistics related to the question of the status of linguistic units in general, and of simple and complex sentences, in particular, as signs of a nominative and communicative nature; as well as upon their structural-semantic and functional-communicative semantic features and their constituent parts such as, for example, the subject, the predicate, the object, the adverbial modifier, the introductory part and the introductory component, which are peculiarly characterized, defined and classified by the author. Proceeding from an integral approach to linguistic phenomena in modern directions of linguistics, which make up its anthropocentric paradigm, the author tries to express his attitude to a number of controversial issues faced by specialists in the field of syntax. Approaching these issues from a comparative-typological point of view, the author argues that, like any significant unit of a language, a sentence and all its types and varieties from a constructive and communicative-pragmatic points of view, should be considered as integral monolithic signs like a word. Pushing off from this general linguistic regularity, the author approaches in a new way to such parts of the sentence, which perform the syntactic function of a part of a sentence and its extenders, establishes and reveals their substantial status within the framework of sentences of such modern languages as English, which represents a type of languages of a predominantly analytical system; Uzbek representing a type of languages of a predominantly agglutinative system, and Russian demonstrating a type of languages of a predominantly inflectional system. According to the author, there is a universal law, in line with which any significant linguistic unit used in a sentence, alone or in combination with another unit, can and should function as a specific syntactic part of it, therefore, within the framework of a sentence there is not and cannot be such a member that should not have a syntactic function in it. Based on this approach to the sentence and its members, the author characterizes and classifies the members of the sentence and their extenders from the linguo-cognitive and linguo-pragmatic points of view in a new way, in contrast to the traditional approach, according to which the extenders of the sentence are its parts, and the extenders of the parts cannot be members of the sentence. The article attempts also to clarify the question of the role and functions of the subject and predicate in the constructive structure of the sentence and their relationships with other parts of the sentence. As a result, a new taxonomy of a simple sentence, depending on the ability of the subject and predicate to create their “peaks” has been worked out. It is substantiated that the correct solution of the problems raised in the article contributes to the improvement of the state of learning and teaching languages and the process of translation from one language into another.

This chapter examines expressions of commands (imperatives) in Wolaitta and the ways in which the imperative is distinguished from statements and questions. Although each sentence type is formally distinct, imperatives and questions share a number of morpho-syntactic properties. Similar to declarative and interrogative sentences, imperatives in Wolaitta involve verbal grammatical categories such as the distinction of person, number, and gender of the subject as well as negative and positive polarity. In contrast to previous studies, the present contribution establishes the function of a set of morphemes based on -árk and -érk to be the expression of plea or appeal to an addressee rather than politeness when issuing a command. Instead, politeness in commands is expressed by using plural (pro)nominal and verbal elements. The imperative in Wolaitta is a robust construction which is also used in formulaic speeches such as leave-taking as well as in blessing, curses, and advice.

The objectives of the study is to find out whether the writers’ articles of the Jakarta Post issued in January 2015 have good style in their writing or not and to find out the element of  style used in Jakarta Post articles issued on January 2015. The subject of the study is the Jakarta Post Issued  in January 2015. There are five editorials selected and then analyzed based on Seyler’s theory. Based on the analysis, the editorials applied formal words. From the analysis, it was found that the total sentence for simple sentence is 34, 14 compound sentences, 24 complex sentences, 24 expanded sentences, 2 antithesis, and 1 metaphor.  In organizating the text, the writer of the editorial placed the main topic in the beginning paragraph. A writer can make good style in his/her writing by applying more active sentences in his/her writing, use familiar words and not using cliché, use short sentences, and write with nouns and verbs.

Interference has been identified as a cause of processing difficulty in linguistic dependencies, such as the subject-verb relation (Van Dyke and Lewis, 2003). However, while mounting evidence implicates retrieval interference in sentence processing, the nature of the retrieval cues involved - and thus the source of difficulty - remains largely unexplored. Three experiments used self-paced reading and eye-tracking to examine the ways in which the retrieval cues provided at a verb characterize subjects. Syntactic theory has identified a number of properties correlated with subjecthood, both phrase-structural and thematic. Findings replicate and extend previous findings of interference at a verb from additional subjects, but indicate that retrieval outcomes are relativized to the syntactic domain in which the retrieval occurs. One, the cues distinguish between thematic subjects in verbal and nominal domains. Two, within the verbal domain, retrieval is sensitive to abstract syntactic properties associated with subjects and their clauses. We argue that the processing at a verb requires cue-driven retrieval, and that the retrieval cues utilize abstract grammatical properties which may reflect parser expectations.

This paper investigates syntactic properties of verbless constructions in Chinese. Verbless constructions differ from constructions with overt verbs in three major respects. First, there is a VP-internal nominal raising in Chinese, which is optional if an overt verb shows up, and obligatory if there is no overt verb. Second, while an overt verb can select various kinds of argument, the internal argument of a verbless construction cannot be indefinite. Third, there are two types of object depictive secondary predication constructions, and only one of them allows for a null verb.

In this paper we describe the pragmatic, lexical and syntactic properties of the Syrian Arabic Coreferential Dative Construction (CDC), featuring a dative element bearing agreement features which are identical to those of the subject in the clause, the Coreferential Dative (CD), and an obligatory expression of attenuative vague measure, described by us in Al-Zahre & Boneh (2010). We first show that the CD, which has no truth conditional meaning, contributes to the creation of a Conventional Implicature (Horn 2004, Potts 2005). Second, we propose a way to compositionally integrate the CD into the derivation of these constructions by arguing that the visible pronominal features are non-referential but rather the morphological reflex of checked uninterpretable phi-features on a defective applicative head. To couch the analysis in a wider context, we show how it can extend to other categories of non-core dative in Syrian Arabic.

The subject of this article is the analysis of clauses of aim, cause, consequence and condition in French in view to the automatic processing. Our theoretical framework is that of lexicon-grammar. This study differs from the usual grammatical analyses. Here, the complex sentence is studied on the model of the simple sentence, defined as an operator accompanied by its arguments. The conjunctive phrase is our starting point for this study, and it is then shown that the noun around which it is formed, is of predicative type and has the main clause and the subordinate as arguments. This is a predicate «of second order». Automatic processing requires extremely accurate notation of syntactic and semantic properties if ambiguity and polysemy are to be correctly handled. Those descriptions based on syntactico-semantic features are insufficient, which is why the concept of « class of objects » is brought in. There are as many types of relations as there are semantic types of predicate. This is the reason why a semantic typology of predicates is sketched out, integrating lexical, syntactic and semantic components. It is shown that each semantic type can have its own appropriate lexical means of expression and specific syntactic behaviour.

Abstract Three experiments investigated the interpretation and production of pronouns in German. The first two experiments probed the preferred interpretation of a pronoun in contexts containing two potential antecedents by having participants complete a sentence fragment starting either with a personal pronoun or a d-pronoun. We systematically varied three properties of the potential antecedents: syntactic function, linear position, and topicality. The results confirm a subject preference for personal pronouns. The preferred interpretation of d-pronouns cannot be captured by any of the three factors alone. Although a d-pronoun preferentially refers to the non-topic in many cases, this preference can be overridden by the other two factors, linear position and syntactic function. In order to test whether interpretive preferences follow from production biases as proposed by the Bayesian theory of Kehler et al. (2008), a third experiment had participants freely produce a continuation sentence for the contexts of the first two experiments. The results show that personal pronouns are used more often to refer to a subject than to an object, recapitulating the subject preference found for interpretation and thereby confirming the account of Kehler et al. (2008). The interpretation results for the d-pronoun likewise follow from the corresponding production data.

Vocabulary is difficult skill for students on SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Surakarta. The students usually tend to listen, speak, read, and write text based on their vocabulary mastering. Once they get difficulty in understanding text, they will lose their courage to do more instructions. In order to build or understand a simple sentence, they need to open dictionary per word. As a result, students will easily lose interest and motivation to learn more. This research is carried out in SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Surakarta. It is on Jl. Kerinci No. 15. The research is conducted from July until Agustus 2016. The subject of this research is the IX-D grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Surakarta. The researcher chooses class D because the students have difficulties in understanding text due to the lack of vocabularies. That is why the researcher decides to improve their mastery in vocabulary through “vocabulary breakfast box”. “Vocabulary Breakfast Box” is adapted from “Kotak Sarapan Pagi” which is mostly applied at elementary school learning. It is about a board which contains of several boxes. Each box has an assignment for each student. The assignment can be the same as or different from others. It depends on the students’ assessment. The assignment exists in a form of a small paper. It consists of questions about words, sentences or text comprehension. Each box has students’ number or name. So students won’t go wrong to take others’ assignment. By using “vocabulary breakfast box”, the learning process in class has become interesting and varieties. Students are excited to try new strategy with teacher and discuss its benefits and lacks after the activity. Their vocabulary mastery becomes improved and they are able to answer most questions in each skill because they have recognized the words on the text or dialogue. Keywords: improving, vocabulary, vocabulary breakfast box
