Abstract Crustaceans were among the most valuable fishery resources in Hong Kong. However, the unrestricted and intensive use of different fishing gears, especially bottom trawling, has led to the depletion of commercially important crustaceans in Hong Kong since the 1980s. This study investigated whether commercial crustaceans recovered after the implementation of a permanent Hong Kong-wide trawl ban that began on December 31, 2012. Standardized field surveys were conducted using a commercial shrimp trawler at two sites in eastern and western waters of Hong Kong before (2004) and after the trawl ban (2013–2014 and 2015–2016) and two sites in southern waters after the trawl ban. Diversity, mean size, abundance, biomass and level of disturbance of commercial crustaceans from the three periods were investigated. The eastern waters exhibited an increased diversity of crustacean assemblages in Inner Tolo, and a higher abundance and biomass of crabs were detected in Outer Tolo after the trawl ban. Reduced disturbance, higher diversity in crustacean assemblages and greater abundance and biomass of predatory crabs were observed after the trawl ban in the outer estuary of western waters, and increased abundance and biomass of shrimp were detected in the inner estuary of western waters. No temporal or negative changes were detected in the southeast and southern waters of Lamma Island. The various responses of crustacean assemblages in Hong Kong waters revealed the critical role of complex interactions among multiple stresses, such as ongoing reclamation works, illegal trawling activities and increased fishing efforts using other (legal) fishing methods.

SummaryComputed tomography studies concerning pineal calcification (PC) in schizophrenia have been conducted mainly by one author who correlated this calcification with several aspects of the illness. On the basis of these findings the aim of the present study was to analyze size and incidence of pineal gland calcification by CT in schizophrenics and healthy controls, and to verify the relationship between pineal calcification and age, and the possible correlation with psychopathologic variables. Pineal calcification was measured on CT scans of 87 schizophrenics and 46 controls divided into seven age subgroups of five years each. No significant differences in PC incidence and mean size between patients and controls were observed as far as the entire group was considered. PC size correlated with age both in schizophrenics and controls. We found a higher incidence of PC in schizophrenics in the age subgroup of 21–25 years, and a negative correlation with positive symptoms of schizophrenia in the overall group. These findings could suggest a premature calcific process in schizophrenics and a probable association with `non-paranoid' aspects of the illness. Nevertheless the potential role of this process possibly related to some aspects of the altered neurodevelopment in schizophrenia is still unclear.

This study proposes a new methodology for determining the relationship between child-directed speech and child speech in early acquisition. It illustrates the use of this methodology in investigating the relationship between the morphological richness of child-directed speech and the speed of morphological development in child speech. Both variables are defined in terms of mean size of paradigm (MSP) and estimated in a set of longitudinal spontaneous speech corpora of nine children and their caretakers. The children are aged 1;3–3;0, acquiring nine different languages that vary in terms of morphological richness. The main result is that the degree of morphological richness in child-directed speech is positively related to the speed of development of noun and verb paradigms in child speech.

ABSTRACTIn this paper we present results of the absorption and photoluminescence (PL) of CdSdoped Si02 films fabricated by RF co-sputtering (semiconductor volume fraction f=1–15%, nano-crystallite's mean size 5–7nm) and matrix-free films of close-packed CdS nanocrystallites (f∼30%, size 2–5nm) produced by an original chemical method. The absorption spectra have been modelled using the modified Maxwell-Garnett model. This gives the e-h pair state energies and evidence of a strong absorption in the glass matrix containing CdS. The temperature dependence of the spectral position and broadening of the PL peak is analysed. It is concluded that a photo-generated hole is captured on an acceptor-type trap before the radiative recombination with a confined electron. The excitation of this ‘band-edge’ PL occurs through some states in the matrix and directly in the CdS crystallites for the two kinds of samples, respectively. The temperature coefficients of the optical transition energies for the nearly matrix-free films are similar to those of bulk CdS, while for the CdS/glass films they are smaller. This may be because of the different boundary conditions for the thermal expansion of CdS crystallites.

The life history of B. mackini was studied in a large argillotrophic lake during 1970–1972. Hatching began immediately after spring thaw and was terminated by rising salinity 10 days to 2 weeks later. Growth rates reached maxima of 1 mm/day at 4 weeks of age and then declined as mean size approached 22–23 mm at 7–8 weeks. Clutch sizes varied as a function of female length. Maximum biomass of 580 mg dry weight/m2 (2700 cal/m2) was reached in late May, of which 3.9% per day was consumed by B. gigas. Source of the energy is presumed to be a bacteria – organic matter complex associated with suspended particles. Life cycle details are compared with other fairy shrimp species and the role of B. mackini in the community is discussed.

The estimators proportional to (NA(x,y)NA(x,z)NA(y,z))1/2 and (NL(x)NL(y)NL(z)) obtained by profile and intercept counts are recommended by ASTM Standards E 112 for 3D grain intensity l of anisotropic grain structures (NA(•) are estimated in three mutually perpendicular planes suitably oriented with respect to the prevailing anisotropy direction and NL(•) are intercept intensities along three suitably selected mutually perpendicular directions). However, l is also related to the profile and intercept intensities l', l', namely l= c'(l')3/2= c'(l')3. The induced intensities are estimated by arithmetic means NA = (NA(x,y)+NA(x,z)+NA(y,z))/3, NL = (NL(x)+NL(y)+NL(z))/3. A simple model isdeveloped, in which the role of geometric and arithmetic means of profile and intercept counts in the grain size estimation is elucidated. Its results are compared with computer simulated random tessellations with prevailing rod-like and plate-like cells and applied to anisotropic grain structures of pure Al produced by ECAP and to platinum based composite Pt - 0.5 Y2O3.
