AbstractRecent work has shown that number concepts activate both spatial and magnitude representations. According to the social co-representation literature which has shown that participants typically represent task components assigned to others together with their own, we asked whether explicit magnitude meaning and explicit spatial coding must be present in a single mind, or can be distributed across two minds, to generate a spatial-numerical congruency effect. In a shared go/no-go task that eliminated peripheral spatial codes, we assigned explicit magnitude processing to participants and spatial processing to either human or non-human co-agents. The spatial-numerical congruency effect emerged only with human co-agents. We demonstrate an inter-personal level of conceptual congruency between space and number that arises from a shared conceptual representation not contaminated by peripheral spatial codes. Theoretical implications of this finding for numerical cognition are discussed.

The social change model (SCM) of leadership development defines all students as potential leaders. Service acts as a powerful means for developing leadership skills within our students. After the 20th anniversary celebration by the International Leadership Association of the SCM, the authors wanted to illustrate how practice can inform research as they applied the model to a 4-year leadership program. The President’s Leadership Fellows is a 4-year program where all students have an opportunity to develop into leaders through classroom and cocurricular leadership experiences. Students actively participate in individual and group activities designed to experience social change and leadership theory on a practical, personal level. The students can then identify with the key elements of the SCM framework. This article outlines this leadership program and how it can help inform further research from practice.

This introductory chapter provides an outline of some of the ideological, political, and institutional structures and contexts within which the plays under discussion in this study were produced and consumed. Shakespeare's stagings of history were peculiarly intense in their concentration on the doings of kings and princes. In an emergently absolutist personal monarchy and during a period in which issues of succession and legitimacy were much on people's minds, plays that were so insistently about kings and queens were also quintessentially political plays. As a great deal of recent work has shown, such political concerns could well structure and, in their turn, be structured by, parallel sets of concerns and beliefs about the workings of the social order and the gender hierarchy. Political narratives then became useful ways to figure and interrogate the dynamics of economic exchange and value determined by the market or the workings of the gender hierarchy.

This study was aimed to explore the Papua students' adaptation experience while they are studying in Surabaya. A qualitative approach with phenomenological method was applied. Seven participants were recruited using purposive and snowball sampling. Data collected using semi-structural interviews and analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). The results shows that Papua students face many difficulties in adapting to the local society. The difference in physical characteristics, language and cultural habit are the main reasons. These difficulties affect their personal and sosial life. At personal level, inferiority and sensitivity are the main issues, while at the social level, passivity and enclave formation are dominant tendencies. In order to solve the difficulties and its effects, participants apply some strategies, namely avoidance, self control, and active coping. These strategies are chosen by participants to gain self development and wellbeing. It can be concluded from the result that most partisipants are facing adaptation difficulties while they are studying in Surabaya; however, they make some efforts to cope the difficulties.Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bagaimana pengalaman penyesuaian dirivmahasiswa Papua di Surabaya. Pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode fenomenologis digunakan. Tujuh partisipan berhasil direkrut dengan teknik purposive dan snowball sampling. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara semi-terstruktur dan dianalisis menggunakan interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa mahasiswa Papua di Surabaya mengalami berbagai hambatan dalam menyesuaikan diri ketika sedang menjalani kuliah. Penyebab hambatan itu adalah adalah perbedaan dalam bahasa dan kebiasaan budaya. Partisipan juga mempersepsi perbedaan fisik dan warna kulit sebagai penyebab hambatan interaksi. Hambatan interaksi yang dihadapi menimbulkan dampak personal maupun sosial bagi para partisipan. Inferioritas dan sensitifitas adalah di antara beberapa dampak personal yang dialami. Sedangkan kecenderungan untuk lebih bergaul hanya dengan sesama mahasiswa Papua dan keengganan berhubungan dekat dengan mahasiswa dan masyarakat lokal menjadi dampak sosialnya. Namun, adanya hambatan interaksi dan dampaknya tersebut disadari oleh partisipan cukup merugikan sehingga mereka menjalankan beberapa strategi penyesuaian diri untuk mengatasinya. Beberapa strategi yang dapat diidentifikasi adalah: menghindar dari masalah (avoidance), berupaya mengendalikan emosi, pikiran, dan perilaku (self control), dan menghadapi masalah secara aktif (active coping). Berbagai strategi tersebut dilakukan terutama didorong oleh dua tujuan, yaitu demi pengembangan diri dan untuk menjaga kesejahteraan psikologis mereka. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa partisipan penelitian ini menghadapi berbagai kesulitan dalam beradaptasi dengan masyarakat lokal di mana mereka sedang studi, namun mereka melakukan upaya untuk mengatasi hambatan-hambatan adaptasi tersebut.

Recent work has begun to investigate the interaction between semantics and social meaning. This study contributes to that line of inquiry by investigating how particular social meanings that are popularly believed to arise from the English discourse particle just are related to the conventional semantic meaning of just. In addition to proposing an inferential process by which the social meanings associated with just arise, this paper reports the results of a social perception experiment designed to test whether those social inferences arise when just is used in particular speech acts and whether they depend on the speaker’s gender and level of authority relative to the addressee. The use of just was found to significantly increase the perceived insecurity of men but not of women. This suggests that listeners may more strongly perceive speaker qualities that stereotypes cause them not to expect.

This paper analyses reconfigurations of play in emergent digital materialities of game design. It extends recent work examining dimensions of hybridity in playful products by turning attention to interfaces, practicesand spaces, rather than devices. We argue that the concept of hybrid playrelies on predefining clear and distinct digital or material entities that then enter into hybrid situations. Drawing on concepts of the ‘interface’ and ‘postdigital’, we argue the distribution of computing devices creates difficulties for such presuppositions. Instead, we propose thinking these situations through an ‘aesthetic of recruitment’ that is able to accommodate the intensive entanglements and inherent openness of both the social and technical in postdigital play.

Introduction. Physical activity (PA), particularly low-impact activities like bicycling, can improve health in older adults. However, bicycling rates are lower in the Midwest than other regions in the United States. Therefore, it is important to identify unique social, personal, and environmental factors that inhibit or promote bicycling, and how these are associated with PA. The influences of these factors were explored using the social ecological model. Method. A cross-sectional online survey was developed using previously validated local and national bicycling questionnaires, then distributed to Midwestern bicyclists 50 years and older. Exploratory factor analysis was conducted to understand the influences of social, personal, and environmental barriers and promoters on bicycling patterns. All models were conducted separately by gender, and accounted for age, race, education, marital status, income, and employment. Results. Social promoters (B = 0.386, p = .002), such as having friends/family that bicycle were associated with greater PA. Personal promoters (B = −0.311, p = .006) such as needing to lose weight were associated with reduced PA. Environmental factors had no associations with PA. However, individual environmental components, such as number of vehicles on the roads, were significantly associated with PA for both males and females. Females reported more barriers than males. The overall model accounted for 16.1% of the total variance in PA levels. Conclusion. Interventions to promote PA via bicycling in older adults should focus on social factors, while also reducing personal-level factors for males. Interventions for females could focus on reducing specific personal, social, and environmental barriers.

Human perceivers continually react to the social world implicitly —that is, spontaneously and rapidly. Earlier research suggested that implicit impressions of other people are slower to change than self-reported impressions in the face of contradictory evidence, often leaving them miscalibrated from what one learns to be true. Recent work, however, has identified conditions under which implicit impressions can be rapidly updated. Here, we review three lines of work showing that implicit impressions are responsive to information that is highly diagnostic, believable, or reframes earlier experience. These findings complement ongoing research on mechanisms of changing implicit impressions in a wider variety of groups, from real people to robots, and provide support for theoretical frameworks that embrace greater unity in the factors that can impact implicit and explicit social cognition.

Abstract While decades of research demonstrate that people punish unfair treatment, recent work illustrates that alternative, non-punitive responses may also be preferred. Across five studies (N = 1,010) we examine non-punitive methods for restoring justice. We find that in the wake of a fairness violation, compensation is preferred to punishment, and once maximal compensation is available, punishment is no longer the favored response. Furthermore, compensating the victim—as a method for restoring justice—also generalizes to judgments of more severe crimes: participants allocate more compensation to the victim as perceived severity of the crime increases. Why might someone refrain from punishing a perpetrator? We investigate one possible explanation, finding that punishment acts as a conduit for different moral signals depending on the social context in which it arises. When choosing partners for social exchange, there are stronger preferences for those who previously punished as third-party observers but not those who punished as victims. This is in part because third-parties are perceived as relatively more moral when they punish, while victims are not. Together, these findings demonstrate that non-punitive alternatives can act as effective avenues for restoring justice, while also highlighting that moral reputation hinges on whether punishment is enacted by victims or third-parties.

AbstractResearchers in a variety of disciplines are currently exploring how number words and other culturally variant symbols for quantities enable and enhance numerical cognition. In this article I survey the ways in which fieldwork among Amazonian languages is helping to elucidate the relationship between numerical cognition and language. I highlight several noteworthy findings in recent work on this topic, address their implications, and also consider the potential of future fieldwork on languages with typologically remarkable number systems.
