In this paper, I claim that reciprocity consists of three independentsemantic components, namely (i) the distributivity component, (ii) the anaphoricitycomponent and (iii) the disjointness component. I show that a distributor sorezorein Japanese induces a reciprocal reading when the configuration between sorezoreand its antecedent violates Condition B. Adopting the plural dynamic semanticframework (van den Berg 1996; Nouwen 2007; Brasoveanu 2007: among others), Ipropose that the co-reference condition of sorezore is collectively evaluated, but itsscope domain is distributively evaluated. As a result, sorezore and its antecedentare co-referential at the level of plural individuals, but disjoint at the level ofatomic individuals, deriving a reciprocal reading. This suggests that the disjointnesscondition is not hard-wired in the semantics of sorezore. I further discuss otherreciprocal strategies in Japanese and in other languages and suggest that distributivityand anaphoricity are not always encoded to a single entry, either.

Abstract This study compares data from the two Society of Automotive Engineers test methods for rolling resistance: J-2452 (Stepwise Coast-Down) and J-1269 (Equilibrium) steady state. The ability of the two methods to evaluate tires was examined by collecting data for 12 tires. The data were analyzed and the data showed that the two methods ranked the tires the same after the data were regressed and the rolling resistance magnitude was calculated at the Standard Reference Condition. In addition, analysis of the two methods using this matched set of testing provided an opportunity to evaluate each of these test standards against the other. It was observed that each test has merits absent from the other.

Memory is considered to be a flexible and reconstructive system. However, there is little experimental evidence demonstrating how associations are falsely constructed in memory, and even less is known about the role of the self in memory construction. We investigated whether false associations involving non-presented stimuli can be constructed in episodic memory and whether the self plays a role in such memory construction. In two experiments, we paired participants’ own names (i.e., self-reference) or the name “Adele” (i.e., other-reference) with words and pictures from Deese/Roediger–McDermott (DRM) lists. We found that (1) participants not only falsely remembered the non-presented lure words and pictures as having been presented, but also misremembered that they were paired with their own name or “Adele,” depending on the referenced person of related DRM lists; and (2) there were more critical lure–self associations constructed in the self-reference condition than critical lure–other associations in the other-reference condition for word but not for picture stimuli. These results suggest a self-enhanced constructive effect that might be driven by both relational and item-specific processing. Our results support the spreading-activation account for constructive episodic memory.

The current paper presents the validation of some hypotheses used for developing a one-dimensional twin-entry turbine model with experimental measurements. A Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA) technique has been used for measuring the axial Mach number and for counting the number of particles downstream of the rotor outlet. These measurements have been done for different mass flow ratio (MFR) and reduced turbocharger speed conditions. The flow coming from each turbine entry does not fully mix with the other within the rotor since, downstream of the rotor, they can still be differentiated. Thus, the hypothesis of studying twin-entry turbines as two separated single-entry turbines in one-dimensional models is corroborated. Moreover, the rotor outlet area corresponding to each flow branch has linear trends with the MFR value. Therefore, the rotor outlet effective area used for one-dimensional models should vary linearly with the MFR value.

ABSTRACT  Female residents in surgical training may face stereotype threat. The awareness of negative stereotypes about surgical ability based on gender may heighten stress and thus reduce performance.Background  The main objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness of a brief stress-reducing writing exercise, known as a values affirmation, to mitigate the negative effects of stereotype threat on the performance of female surgical residents.Objective  This is a randomized, controlled trial in which 167 residents were invited to participate. A total of 45 resident volunteers, including 18 women, were randomized to the affirmation condition or the no-affirmation condition. We administered a values affirmation intervention and measured clinical evaluations data both prior to and 6 months after the intervention.Methods  Women benefited from the affirmation. Women who had participated in the affirmation exercise earned higher clinical evaluation scores than those in the control condition (B = 0.34, P < .05). For men, performance did not differ by affirmation condition (B = –0.20, P = .35).Results  Our findings suggest a benefit of values affirmation for women in surgical training, as measured by performance on clinical evaluations. This suggests that a brief psychological intervention may improve on-the-job performance for women in surgery, an underrepresented group.Conclusions

Demand for computing resources in high energy physics (HEP) shows a highly dynamic behavior, while the provided resources by the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG) remains static. It has become evident that opportunistic resources such as High Performance Computing (HPC) centers and commercial clouds are well suited to cover peak loads. However, the utilization of these resources gives rise to new levels of complexity, e.g. resources need to be managed highly dynamically and HEP applications require a very specific software environment usually not provided at opportunistic resources. Furthermore, aspects to consider are limitations in network bandwidth causing I/O-intensive workflows to run inefficiently. The key component to dynamically run HEP applications on opportunistic resources is the utilization of modern container and virtualization technologies. Based on these technologies, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) has developed ROCED, a resource manager to dynamically integrate and manage a variety of opportunistic resources. In combination with ROCED, HTCondor batch system acts as a powerful single entry point to all available computing resources, leading to a seamless and transparent integration of opportunistic resources into HEP computing. KIT is currently improving the resource management and job scheduling by focusing on I/O requirements of individual workflows, available network bandwidth as well as scalability. For these reasons, we are currently developing a new resource manager, called TARDIS. In this paper, we give an overview of the utilized technologies, the dynamic management, and integration of resources as well as the status of the I/O-based resource and job scheduling.
