The Agenda on Non-Communicable Diseases: Editorial Review

Health and well-being of individuals is an essential part of a human’s life, with increasing age we as humans are prone to be affected by various complications that can affect our human body. For decades, communicable diseases were the main causes of death around the world from the early 1900 outbreak of the Spanish Flu to the more recent COVID-19 outbreak in the 21st Century [1]. However, over the years a common trend has been observed globally where the rise of Non-Communicable Diseases also known as NCD’s has impacted people both mentally as well as financially. Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) including the most causes of death in the world including Indonesia. Adolescence is one of the periods that determine the pattern of formation of health status in adulthood. Risk behaviors generally begin in the teenage period. Risk factors for unhealthy lifestyles in adolescents are caused by many factors, one of which is knowledge. Knowledge or cognitive is a domain that is very influential on a person's actions or behavior. The objective of the study was to assesknowledge about NCDs and behavioural risk factors in adolescents. This research uses descriptive method with cross sectional approach and data collection is done by using a questionnaire. The sample in this study was taken purposively from SMAN 2 Ungaran, SMAN 1 Bergas, and SMA Muhammadiyah Sumowono as many as 146 students. The data obtained were then analyzed using descriptive analysis. The results showed that the most percentage were respondents who had good knowledge about non-communicable diseases that was equal to 46.3%. Nevertheless there are still many respondents who have a fairly good knowledge of 41.8% and as many as 11.0% of respondents still have poor knowledge. Therefore, efforts are needed to increase the knowledge of high school adolescents about non-communicable diseases from schools through collaboration with relevant parties.

This chapter includes a brief overview of musculoskeletal conditions which are described in health terms as non-communicable diseases. Health systems internationally share common goals of improving the health and well-being of their populations and the management of non-communicable diseases is key in every country. This chapter describes how across the world governments share significant challenges for the future, with the growing elderly and chronic disease populations and increasing healthcare costs. Agreed international goals have been set by the World Health Organization and some of the key targets are outlined. The consequences of either trauma or disease can result in a musculoskeletal condition that may impact the individual’s quality of life, health, and functional ability. The role of the nurse and how individual nurses in all care sectors should consider public health factors when caring for patients are discussed.

Health Goals

The Milan Charter on Urban Obesity highlights the challenges of urban environments as a battleground for human health, as cities are often organized to subvert public health goals, and promote rather than prevent the development of obesity and consequent non-communicable diseases. The Charter articulates ten principles which detail actions and strategies through which general practitioners, diverse medical specialists, related healthcare professionals, administrators and healthcare practice managers, policy actors – within health systems and at a national level – along with experts across disciplines, and citizens, can work in cooperation to meet this challenge and improve public health. The Charter urges the adoption of decisions that deliver the following: (i) policies which enable our cities to become healthier and less obesogenic, more supportive of well-being and less health-disruptive in general, and (ii) policies that fully support primary prevention strategies, that address social stigma, and that ensure fair access to treatment for people living with obesity. The Milan Charter on Urban Obesity aims to raise awareness of our shared responsibility for the health of all citizens, and focuses on addressing the health of people living with obesity – not only as a challenge in its own right, but a gateway to other major non-communicable diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, and some cancers.

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are one of the main challenges to the development and well-being of populations. Based on the documents issued by the United Nations system (FAO, ECOSOC, UNGA, and WHO), it is argued that the 2030 Agenda is partially harmonized with the recommendations of these organizations. This partial harmonization is explained through political coherence by illustrating explanatory vectors from 2005 to 2019 for products associated with NCDs risk factors: alcohol, pesticides, ultra-processed foods, and tobacco.

Diabetes mellitus is one of the major health problems in the world, the incidence and associated mortality are increasing. Fourth leading causes of death in the most advanced countries and there, in other emerging and recently industrialized nations, still controlled the epidemic. Inadequate control of blood sugar has significant consequences for well-being. Ayurveda and other Indian writing referenced the utilized of plants in the treatment of different diseases. Medicinal plant with antidiabetic potential has been recent area of research. The efficiency of these medicinal plants may regulate the diabetic metabolic abnormalities. This work would help researchers to choose potential herbal for diabetic treatment.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, governments around the world closed all the educational institutions to control the spread of disease, which is creating a direct impact on students, educators, and institutions. The purpose of this study was to analyze the perception of academic stress experienced by students during current online education and coping strategies using emotional intelligence adopted by them. The study aims to conduct a timely assessment of the effects of stress due to COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of college students. The authors conducted interview surveys with 227 students at a private university in India to understand the effects of online education during pandemic on their mental health and well-being. The data were analyzed through quantitative and qualitative methods. Of the 227 students, 71% indicated anxiety and stress due to ongoing pandemic.
