Cross-Sectional Relationship Between Beta and Realized Returns in Emerging Markets

Abstract This paper examines the conditional risk-return relationship caused by the impact of using realized returns as a proxy for expected returns, which requires a separation of negative and positive market premiums. Following the methodology of Pettengill et al. (1995), we test the cross sectional relationship between beta and realized returns on the Amman Stock Exchange (ASE) for ten beta sorted portfolio over the period of January 1993 to December 2016. The empirical results suggest that the traditional two-pass approach produces an insignificant relationship between beta and realized returns in most of the sample period. However, when adjusting for negative market premiums, the results show a significant and consistent relationship for all the testing periods and samples. However, a guaranteed reward for holding extra risk occurred only in the period 2001 –2008, which suggests an assurance of positive risk-return tradeoff during bull markets. The crucial role that implementation of Code of Corporate Governance plays on protecting the rights of minorities, shareholders, local as well as foreign investors cannot be denied. Companies all over the world are required to implement their respective Code of Corporate Governance for avoiding agency conflicts between companies management and stakeholders and for assuring transparency in accountability. This paper aims at exploring the impact of implementation of corporate governance practices (designed by Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan) have on the financial position of companies. For explanatory variables of the study, composition of the board as per the Code of Corporate Governance that comprises of presence of independent, executive and non-executive directors has been taken into consideration. Return on equity has been taken as an indicator of firms profitability i.e. the dependent variable. For this study, companies listed on food producing sector of Karachi Stock Exchange have been screened for excogitation of the relationship. It is an empirical research based on nine years data from 2007–2015. Using Hausman Test for selecting the data analysis technique between Fixed or Random, Fixed Cross Sectional Panel Analysis has been used for analysis of the data collected. Findings indicate that presence of independent, executive and non-executive directors as per the code requirements levies a significant impact on the profitability of companies indicated by return on equity. It is, thus concluded that companies should ensure compliance with code of governance practices to reduce not only the agency issues but also to increase their profitability.

The different capital structure theories propose the possible asymmetric behavior of capital structure. Thus, this paper empirically investigates whether non-financial Jordanian firms follow symmetrical or asymmetrical adjustment model. Then, an interaction model with the size and profitability (firm characteristics) investigated the impact of low/high profit and small/large size on the adjustment of leverage towards the target leverage ratio. This paper covered the period of 14 years (2002-2015) for a total of 110 companies listed on Amman Stock Exchange (75 industrial and 35 services). Results indicate that although Jordanian firms seek a target leverage ratio, their adjustment towards that target is Asymmetrical and high profitable and large companies tend to adjust faster than low profitable and small size companies.

Due to the increased competition between the various industrial companies at the local and international levels, there became a need to adopt modern and effective methods and tools that enable such companies to acquire and maintain competitive advantages that help them choose, apply and assess the strategies adopted. One of the most important tools is the Balanced scorecard according to the leadership concept and the decisions of the COBIT committee; this tool had a great concern and attention by researchers or businessmen; applying it led to a remarkable success in some companies, which made it move from a mere tool of management to an integrated system of strategic management. The method of measuring the balanced scorecard according to the COBIT committee helps the industrial companies’ measure their strategic performance wisely and even goes further in helping formulate the companies' industrial strategies in a pioneer method, translate them into strategic goals, translate these objectives into strategic measurements achieving a follow-up and finally assess the industrial strategy locally and globally. Accordingly, the study aimed at shedding light on the impact of the cognitive integration among the dimensions of the traditional balanced scorecard and the IT balanced scorecard on the Entrepreneurship value in the industrial companies. The study community consisted of all the public shareholding industrial companies listed on Amman Stock Exchange by the end of (2015) amounting to (63) (Annual Report of Amman Stock Exchange, 2016). (56) Companies were randomly selected to form the study sample. One of the most important results of the study is that the effectiveness of measuring the quality of applying the traditional Balanced Scorecard and the IT Balanced Scorecard will create the Entrepreneurship value of the industrial companies, thus contributing to achieving the company's strategic objectives. The study recommended the need that the industrial companies follow up the local and international issues linked with the IT related to applying the balanced scorecard to reach for the institutional leadership with the need that such companies encourage innovation processes, accepting new ideas and motivating employees to provide innovative ideas.

This study aims to determine the extent to which the Boards of Directors of the industrial Jordanian Companies listed on Amman Stock Exchange (ASE) comply with the controls of composing audit committees, their working mechanisms, and the impact on the corporate governance. To achieve the objectives of this study, (155) questionnaires were developed and distributed to the staff members relevant to the subject matter of the study. Out of distributed questionnaire, (144) responded questionnaires only were collected from respondents. The number of questionnaires analyzed was (135) and a T-test has been used to test the hypotheses. The results of the study showed that there is a statistically significant correlation on the existence of the commitment of the Boards of Directors of the Jordanian Listed Companies to the disciplines of audit committees’ formation and their mechanisms of work. The results also demonstrated the existence of impact of this commitment on the governance of these companies. The commitments to these controls and their work mechanisms have been developed to enhance corporate governance in Jordanian companies.

This study aims to examine the impact of employee benefitsaccounting (direct and indirect compensation) on (market price, volume of credit facilities and volume of deposits). The study community is represented by commercialbanks listed on the Amman Stock Exchange (ASE), all the continuous banks whose financial data were available during the study period (2007-2015) were selected represented in (13) banks. In order to realize the objectives of the study, the study was based on qualitative data and analytical descriptive method (Panel Data), (E-Views) economic statistics software was used to test hypotheses. The results of the study showed that there is a statisticallysignificant impact on both typesof employees compensations as a whole (direct and indirect) on the market share price, the volume of credit facilities and the volume of deposits. While the results of the study confirmed that the indirect compensation has not got an impact on the volume of customer deposits when it is measured separately. Finally, the study recommended the need to apply good systems that take into account the interest of both the employers and employees for the positive impact on the market share price, the volume of credit facilities and the volume of deposits.

This study investigates the impact of working capital management and its components on profitability as a practical aspect, and how is compatible with the theoretical aspect. Besides, it examines other financial factors that may affect profitability by using a sample of Jordanian manufacturing firms listed in the Amman Stock Exchange for the period (2016-2018). Theoretically, manufacturing firms that have been studied have current assets over half of their total assets. Therefore, the working capital management role will be clearer on firm profitability.Practically, the results indicate that there is a significant relationship between the cash conversion cycle, which is considered as a proxy of working capital management, and profitability of the manufacturing firms. This provides an opportunity to create value for shareholders by decreasing receivable accounts and inventory, enhancing the profitability of the firms and reducing the collection period and by adopting effective credit policy.

The aim of this study was to find out the impact of earnings management on dividend policy of oil and gas companies listed at the Karachi stock exchange. The study uses annual data of oil and gas companies for the period from 2008 to 2015. The dependent and independent variables are dividend policy and earnings management and the three control variables are leverage, return on equity and firm size. Modified cross sectional Jones model (1995) was used for calculating discretionary accruals which has been used as proxy for earnings management whereas measurement of dividend policy has been proxy by dividend payout. The findings from regression analysis indicate that earnings management has insignificant relationship with dividend policy of selected firms in Pakistan. Financial crisis in the world and economic decline period are the main reasons of this relationship. In the decline period the firms try to increase manipulation in earnings as a result the company starts reducing dividend payments. It is concluded that there are some other factors that may influence the pattern of dividend payment in the firms.
