A Unified Correction Method for the Acoustic Refraction (UCMAR) Caused by a Three Dimensional Shear Layer

The acoustic refraction induced by the shear layer in an open-jet wind tunnel causes a source shift when estimating the source location with beamforming. Traditional correction methods of the shear layer refraction are achieved through a computational eff ort or limited using one-dimensional or planar shear layer. In this paper, the unified correction method for acoustic refraction (UCMAR) is suitable for the three dimensions that covers several traditional forms. Meanwhile, the UCMAR can consider more general configurations, such as the temperature gradient on both sides of the shear layer and the off -axis source in a circular wind tunnel. These configurations are validated through a ray tracing technique and a benchmark example. In addition, the principle of time reverse is integrated with UCMAR. This results in a reverse UCMAR, which can quickly attain an acceptable solution.

Abstract We find a one-dimensional protected subsector of $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 4 matter theories on a general class of three-dimensional manifolds. By means of equivariant localization we identify a dual quantum mechanics computing BPS correlators of the original model in three dimensions. Specifically, applying the Atiyah-Bott-Berline-Vergne formula to the original action demonstrates that this localizes on a one-dimensional action with support on the fixed-point submanifold of suitable isometries. We first show that our approach reproduces previous results obtained on S3. Then, we apply it to the novel case of S2× S1 and show that the theory localizes on two noninteracting quantum mechanics with disjoint support. We prove that the BPS operators of such models are naturally associated with a noncom- mutative star product, while their correlation functions are essentially topological. Finally, we couple the three-dimensional theory to general $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = (2, 2) surface defects and extend the localization computation to capture the full partition function and BPS correlators of the mixed-dimensional system.

The Navy’s mine impact burial prediction model creates a time history of a cylindrical or a noncylindrical mine as it falls through air, water, and sediment. The output of the model is the predicted mine trajectory in air and water columns, burial depth/orientation in sediment, as well as height, area, and volume protruding. Model inputs consist of parameters of environment, mine characteristics, and initial release. This paper reviews near three decades’ effort on model development from one to three dimensions: (1) one-dimensional models predict the vertical position of the mine’s center of mass (COM) with the assumption of constant falling angle, (2) two-dimensional models predict the COM position in the (x,z) plane and the rotation around the y-axis, and (3) three-dimensional models predict the COM position in the (x,y,z) space and the rotation around the x-, y-, and z-axes. These models are verified using the data collected from mine impact burial experiments. The one-dimensional model only solves one momentum equation (in the z-direction). It cannot predict the mine trajectory and burial depth well. The two-dimensional model restricts the mine motion in the (x,z) plane (which requires motionless for the environmental fluids) and uses incorrect drag coefficients and inaccurate sediment dynamics. The prediction errors are large in the mine trajectory and burial depth prediction (six to ten times larger than the observed depth in sand bottom of the Monterey Bay). The three-dimensional model predicts the trajectory and burial depth relatively well for cylindrical, near-cylindrical mines, and operational mines such as Manta and Rockan mines.

Detailed grid generated turbulent analysis has been completed using a three-dimensional hot-wire anemometer and traversing mechanism to identify a homogeneous, isotropic flow region downstream of a square mesh. The three-dimensional fluctuating velocity measurements were recorded along the centerline of a wind tunnel test section and spatially over the entire wind tunnel cross section downstream of the square mesh. Turbulent intensities for various grid sizes and Reynolds numbers ranged from a minimum of 0.2 percent to a maximum of 2.2 percent in each of the three principal velocity directions. Spatial homogeneity and isotropy were determined for several turbulent flow conditions and downstream positions using the method of covariances. Covariances, in theory, should approach zero asymptotically; however, in practice, this was not achievable. A subjective judgment is required to determine downstream location where the variance of the three covariances reaches a value close to zero. The average standard deviation provides an estimate for defining the limit or subjective threshold needed to determine the onset of homogeneous, isotropic flow. Implementing this threshold, a quantitative method was developed for predicting the streamwise location for the onset of the homogeneous, isotropic flow region downstream of a 25.4 mm square grid as a function of Reynolds number. A comparison of skewness, determined from one-dimensional hot wire anemometer measurements, and covariances, determined from three dimensional hot wire anemometer measurements, indicates a need for caution when relying solely on one-dimensional measurements for determination of turbulence isotropy. The comprehensive three-dimensional characterization also provides an improved understanding of spatial distribution of fundamental turbulence quantities generated by the grid within a low-speed wind tunnel. Abstract The spatial positions of individual aerosol particles, cloud droplets, or raindrops can be modeled as a point processes in three dimensions. Characterization of three-dimensional point processes often involves the calculation or estimation of the radial distribution function (RDF) and/or the pair-correlation function (PCF) for the system. Sampling these three-dimensional systems is often impractical, however, and, consequently, these three-dimensional systems are directly measured by probing the system along a one-dimensional transect through the volume (e.g., an aircraft-mounted cloud probe measuring a thin horizontal “skewer” through a cloud). The measured RDF and PCF of these one-dimensional transects are related to (but not, in general, equal to) the RDF/PCF of the intrinsic three-dimensional systems from which the sample was taken. Previous work examined the formal mathematical relationship between the statistics of the intrinsic three-dimensional system and the one-dimensional transect; this study extends the previous work within the context of realistic sampling variability. Natural sampling variability is found to constrain substantially the usefulness of applying previous theoretical relationships. Implications for future sampling strategies are discussed.

Locadiff, an innovative imaging technique based on diffuse waves, has recently been developed in order to image mechanical changes in heterogeneous, geological, or man-made materials. This manuscript reports the on-site application of Locadiff to locate several pre-existing cracks on an aeronautical wind tunnel made of pre-stressed concrete. Using 32 transducers working at ultrasonic frequencies (80–220 kHz) where multiple scattering occurs, we monitor during 15 min an area of 2.5 m×2.5 m of a 35-cm-thick wall. With the wind tunnel in its routine operation, structural changes around the cracks are detected, thanks to their closing or opening due to slight pressure changes. By mapping the density of such microstructure changes in the bulk of the material, locating three pre-existing cracks is properly performed in three dimensions.

This paper is a generalization to three dimensions of an earlier study for one-dimensional composites. We show here that in the limit of low frequencies the displacement vector ui(r,t) can be written in the form ui (r,t) = (∂ij + vijl (r) ∂/∂xl + …) Uj (r,t). Here Uj (r,t) is a slowly varying vector function of r and t which describes the mean displacement of each cell of the composite. Its components satisfy a set of three coupled partial differential equations with constant coefficients. These coefficients are obtainable from the three-by-three secular equation which yields the low-lying normal mode frequencies, ω(k). Information about local strains is contained in the function vijl(r), which is characteristic of static deformations, and is discussed in detail. Among applications of this method is the structure of the head of a pulse propagating in an arbitrary direction.

The structures of two hydrated salts of 4-aminophenylarsonic acid (p-arsanilic acid), namely ammonium 4-aminophenylarsonate monohydrate, NH4+·C6H7AsNO3−·H2O, (I), and the one-dimensional coordination polymercatena-poly[[(4-aminophenylarsonato-κO)diaquasodium]-μ-aqua], [Na(C6H7AsNO3)(H2O)3]n, (II), have been determined. In the structure of the ammonium salt, (I), the ammonium cations, arsonate anions and water molecules interact through inter-species N—H...O and arsonate and water O—H...O hydrogen bonds, giving the common two-dimensional layers lying parallel to (010). These layers are extended into three dimensions through bridging hydrogen-bonding interactions involving thepara-amine group acting both as a donor and an acceptor. In the structure of the sodium salt, (II), the Na+cation is coordinated by five O-atom donors, one from a single monodentate arsonate ligand, two from monodentate water molecules and two from bridging water molecules, giving a very distorted square-pyramidal coordination environment. The water bridges generate one-dimensional chains extending alongcand extensive interchain O—H...O and N—H...O hydrogen-bonding interactions link these chains, giving an overall three-dimensional structure. The two structures reported here are the first reported examples of salts ofp-arsanilic acid.

Abstract Linkage origami is one effective approach for addressing stiffness and accommodating panels of finite size in origami models and tessellations. However, successfully implementing linkage origami in tessellations can be challenging. In this work, multiple theorems are presented that provide criteria for designing origami units or cells that can be assembled into arbitrarily large tessellations. The application of these theorems is demonstrated through examples of tessellations in two and three dimensions.

Global navigation satellite system (GNSS) positioning in dense urban areas remains a challenge due to the signal reflection by buildings, namely multipath and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) reception. These effects degrade the performance of low-cost GNSS receivers such as in those smartphones. An effective three-dimensional (3D) mapping aided GNSS positioning method is proposed to correct the NLOS error. Instead of applying ray-tracing simulation, the signal reflection points are detected based on a skyplot with the surrounding building boundaries. The measurements of the direct and reflected signals can thus be simulated and further used to determine the user's position based on the measurement likelihood between real measurements. Verified with real experiments, the proposed algorithm is able to reduce the computational load greatly while maintaining a positioning accuracy within 10 metres of error in dense urban environments, compared with the conventional method of ray-tracing based NLOS corrected positioning.
