Background: Infertility, as an individual and social problem, affects couples’ quality of life and family functioning, job relationships, sexual skills, and marital satisfaction. Objectives: The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between infertility and the quality of life in fertile and infertile women. Methods: In this cross-sectional study with a convenience purposive sampling method, 220 eligible women (110 fertile and 110 infertile) admitted to Shiraz’s healthcare centers were selected. Data collection was conducted using a demographic information questionnaire and the World Health Organization Quality of Life questionnaire. Results: In this study, a total of 220 fertile and infertile women were studied. Our findings showed that the quality of life WHOQOL-BREF score was higher in the fertile group (72.21 ± 12.74) than in the infertile group (69.86 ± 12.58), although not significant. However, the physical area of the quality of life was significantly higher in the fertile group (17.55 ± 3.62) than in the infertile group (16.57 ± 3.55) (P = 0.04). There was no statistically significant difference between the groups concerning other quality of life areas (P > 0.05). Conclusions: The results showed that infertility could reduce the quality of life of infertile women in all areas, and this reduction was significant in the physical area. It appears that infertility diagnostic and therapeutic interventions can affect the quality of life of women in the physical area. Further research is recommended in this field.

Introduction: Bruxism is characterized by the parafunctional act of tightening or grinding the teeth, which may occur in a conscious or unconscious way, during sleep or in wakefulness. It has become a growing concern in recent years due to its negative impact on quality of life (QOL) and also because it is considered an important risk factor for temporomandibular disorders. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the QOL related to bruxism in physiotherapy teachers from a private institution through a questionnaire and their perception for such parafunction. Method: A cross-sectional, quantitative and exploratory study. The self-perception of bruxism was assessed through three questions from the Fonseca Anamnestic Indexand the perspective of QLV through the Quality of Life Questionnaire (SF-36), with a sample of 38 teachers of both genders. Results: Based on the results found, the level of statistical significance was set at p<0,05 for all tests. Among the 38 interviewees, 47,4% (n = 18) of professionals were observed with bruxism, with a higher prevalence in the female gender. Regarding the comparisons of QOL in relation to bruxism, a statistically significant difference was found in relation to the dimension of Pain (p=0,014), in which the mean for the bruxism group was (59,8) and without bruxism (78,5). Conclusion: There is a relation of the bruxism with the quality of life of the interviewees, and this habit mainly interferes in the domain of pain. Another aspect that was shown to be significantly associated with bruxism was nervous tension, in which the tense and nervous professionals were associated with self-perception of bruxism.

Abstract Objective: To analyze the association between sociodemographic profile, health profile and the quality of life of caregivers of elderly people diagnosed with dementia. Method: A cross-sectional study was carried out in a geriatric outpatient unit with 35 elderly caregivers diagnosed with dementia. A socio-demographic and health characterization form was used as well as the WHOQOL-bref scale. To verify the association of the variables, the Spearman or Pearson correlation tests were applied, according to the normality of the data. Results: A moderate association between caregiver age and quality of life was found, as well as between total time of care and quality of life, which reveals that the care provided to the elderly with dementia has repercussions on the quality of life. The domains of the WHOQOL-bref with the highest means were Social and Physical Relations, and those with lower mean values were Psychological and Environmental. Conclusion: The identification of conditions that influence the quality of life of caregivers of elderly people with dementia allows actions to promote, protect and recover the health and well-being of those who provide care to be established, so that this care is both for themselves and for the elderly.

Testosterone deficiency (TD) is common and impairs quality of life (QoL) in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, there are no studies about whether testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) can improve QoL in patients with CKD. Therefore, we investigated the effect of TRT on the QoL of patients with CKD and confirmed the safety of TRT. Twenty-five male patients with stages III–IV CKD whose serum testosterone levels were <350 ng/dl (TD) were enrolled and treated with testosterone gel for 3 months (group II). Age-matched controls with stages III–IV CKD and TD (group I) were recommended to exercise for the same period. Before and after the treatment, the BMI and handgrip strength were checked, serological tests were performed, and questionnaires were administered in both groups. Compared to baseline, there was no significant difference in serum testosterone levels, scores of the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36), Aging Males’ Symptoms Scale (AMS), and International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), and grip strength in group I after 3 months. In group II, a significant increase in testosterone, hemoglobin (Hb), and hematocrit (Hct) was observed, and grip strength significantly increased after TRT. Significant improvement in scores of SF-36, AMS, and IPSS was also confirmed after TRT in group II. There was a significant difference in testosterone, Hb, Hct, grip strength, and scores of SF-36, AMS, and IPSS between the two groups after 3 months. The patients in group II showed positive results and continued with TRT. Therefore, we conclude that TRT safely improves the QoL and TD symptoms in patients with moderate-to-severe CKD.

We conducted a cross-sectional study to compare the horizontal and vertical methods used in the surgical closure of the neo-pharynx after total laryngectomy in terms of their effect on swallowing function, swallowing-related quality of life ( QOL), and overall QOL. We also assessed the potential influence of age (≤64 vs. ≥65 yr) and the type of treatment modality (primary, salvage, or total laryngectomy with radiotherapy) on outcomes. Our final study population was made up of 34 patients—31 men and 3 women, aged 49 to 89 years (mean: 66.8)— who had undergone a total laryngectomy. One year after surgery, all patients were asked to complete the M.D. Anderson dysphagia inventory (MDADI), which quantifies swallowing function and swallowing-related QOL, and the University of Washington quality-of-life questionnaire (UW-QOL), which quantifies overall QOL. Of the 34 patients, 16 had undergone a horizontal surgical closure of their neo-pharynx and 18 a vertical closure. According to the MDADI, patients in the horizontal group experienced significantly better swallowing function/QOL; the mean composite MDADI scores were 91.5 in the horizontal group and 68.3 in the vertical group (p = 0.005). We found no significant difference in terms of overall QOL, as the respective mean UW-QOL scores were 81.0 and 80.8 (p = 0.93). The population correlation coefficient was positive in both groups, but more so in the horizontal group (ρhorizontal = 0.876 and ρvertical = 0.676). Neither age nor the type of treatment modality employed influenced swallowing function/QOL (page = 0.10, ptreatment modality = 0.78) or overall QOL (page = 0.08, ptreatment modality = 0.59). We conclude that horizontal closure of the neo-pharynx is superior to vertical closure in terms postoperative swallowing function/QOL but not overall QOL.
